  1. "Actually, SEVERAL films have been pulled, including Fritz the Cat and The Last House on the Left.

    Did those films actually make it to a published schedule? I never saw Fritz The Cat included in a Monthly listing. (Can't say for sure about The Last House On The Left.)

    I know MGMWBRKO (it was MGMWBRKO, wasn't it?) wrote about a slew of films considered for "TCM Underground" that were rejected but my understanding was they were just that - considered.

    But maybe I misunderstood.

    I wasn't intimating you were anything but honest. And I don't think anyone in these Forums was thinking you were lying about your statement. I was just curious because the situation you described occurs very rarely - to my knowledge. In fact, the only instance of "meddling" by S&P at TCM that I - or anyone here - would be aware of happened last June when members were told certain films needed to be moved past 9pm Pacific Time. Otherwise, none of us here ever heard mention of S&P at TCM before.

    If they choose to respond, I can't imagine that the Programming Dept wouldn't be forthright about the schedule change. From my understanding, S&P is part of a channel's Legal Department anyway - and not Programming - making them independent and "the last word" on such decisions. That's nothing for which the Programming Dept should be embarassed - or need to "spin" for public consumption.

    But I don't understand how pulling a film for content reasons somehow violates the "Uncut and Commercial-Free" dictum of TCM.

  3. The mob didn't kill anyone so where is the capital offense that "requires" the state's taking of a life? Attempted murder certainly isn't a "death penalty" crime.

    If Spencer Tracy let his persecutors die for a crime they didn't commit he would be responsible for the deaths of men innocent of the crime with they were charged - there by making him their "executioner"

  4. "Marihuana was also removed from the {May} schedule."

    That may be due to run-time/logistical issues for the planned "triple feature" of Reefer Madness, Marihuana and Cocaine Fiends[/b]. 'sweetsmellofsuccess' pointed that out yesterday in a different thread. Perhaps it wasn't possible to fit all three films into the alloted four-hour timeslot.

    But I can't believe it is a content issue. If Reefer Madness is OK, there shouldn't be a problem with Marihuana. Just guessing though as I haven't seen either movie.

  5. As the end of "31 Days..." approaches I am already missing the Freshpaint Promo for this year's event. It isn't THE highlight of the month (The premires of Wings or All Aboout Eve are battling for that distinction.) but it is certainly a big part of what has been a very memorable month.

    I hope FreshPaint gets to work on the "Race In Hollywood: Asian-Americans Images on Film" event - or this year's "Summer Under The Stars" line-up. If not, there's always next year...

  6. "...now how about one of my suggestions? The Bitter Tea of General Yen!" - Jezebel38

    "Keep an eye out for June." - tcmprogrammr (in reply to the above.)

    We've barely started discussing the May listings and 'tcmprogrammr' drops that hint (bombshell?) about what lies ahead for June. It sounds like The Bitter Tea Of General Yen will be featured during June's "Race In Hollywood: Asian Americans in Hollywood" event.

    I am intrigued. A Frank Capra film starring Barbara Stanwyck that I have never seen certainly sounds interesting. (Where's JackBurley - who saw this in a theater a year ago - to fill us in with a review?)

    Reefer Madness, Marihuana and Cocaine Fiends on May 9th

    FrankGrimes and The CooperGals inevitably "dooking it out" over Cooper day and the obscure Hitchcock films.

  8. "Silent Sunday's seems to be gone along with TCM Import - I hope this isn't permanent." - Terry_W.

    I hope so too. I am hoping it is only to incorporate the unique Frank Sinatra specials into the schedule with an interesting timeslot. (The Frank Sinatra Event corresponds to the realease of what must be a Frank Sinatra "mega-boxset" that month.)

  9. Because there is no info included with the listing - and because some folks may be unfamiliar with the film - here's the lowdown on my "Oh my Gawd!" listing for May.

    Monday May 19th

    Hobson's Choice (1954)

    Henry Hobson runs a successful bootmaker's shop in nineteenth-century Salford. A widower with a weakness for the pub opposite, he tries forcefully to rule the lives of his three unruly daughters. When he decrees 'no marriages' to avoid the expensive matter of settlements, eldest daughter Maggie rebels and sets her sights on Will Mossop, Hobson's star bootmaker. Maggie and Will leave to start up in competition, and she then turns her mind to helping her sisters marry their chosen partners.

    Cast: Charles Laughton, John Mills, Brenda De Banzie

    Director: David Lean

  10. Don't know if I have ever had the honor of being the first to post this announcement.

  11. ". I tend to overwrite." - sugarpuss

    I hadn't noticed. Ilove curling up with a good 'sugarpuss' post. One can read "Les Miserables" only so many times.

    But at least the quality of a 'sugarpuss' post never suffers from the quantity of the post. And I like knowing all that "book-learning" has been put to good use. You're the only person I know who has found a Clifton Webb biography - let alone read it.

  12. "{W}as "Dames" the movie where all the clothes start dancing around by themselves on the clothesline? Or was it one of the "Gold Diggers" movies. I haven't seen any of those movies in awhile. I know I watched them all when Harry Warren had that month long tribute, but after awhile everything starts blurring together. - sugarpuss

    Yes. "The Girl At The Ironing Board" is from Dames. But I had to look it up to make sure. Even I (the one with the Harry Warren suggestion) gets them confused.

    I would like TCM / WB put out a second box-set of WB Musicals with the titles like Go Into Your Dance, Garden Of The Moon, Hollywood Hotel and Twenty Million Sweethearts. "The Girlfriend Of The Whirling Dervish" deserves to immortalized on DVD.

  13. "I can put up with a Cooper poster that features Grace." - FrankGrimes

    OK. Let me see if I understand.

    Grace = Good.

    Jean Arthur / Helen Hayes = Bad.

    "Hitch" = Good.

    "Pappy" = Bad.

    David O. = Desperate.

    Gawd. I'll be happy when "31 Days..." is done so I can go back to being impulsive. (Actually, I have most of March already planned out.) But if this keeps up, it might go off without a "Hitch" or a "Fritz" or a "Mini-Cooper". "12 Days for 'movieman1957' " sounds really appealing about now.

  14. "Has Hollywood completely forgotten how to make intelligent well crafted movies that audiences want to see?"

    No, Hollywood stills knows how to make them because movies like Good Night and Good Luck, Brokeback Mountain, Breach, We Are Marshall and Zodiac still get made.

    The biggest problem with those titles is that they really weren't that popular. The list of Best Picture nominees for the past year is about as relevant to the nation at large as the five noominees for Best Foreign Film. If the Academy continues to offer up such esoteric fare as this past year as the "Best" of Hollywood, they are going to marginalize themselves into irrelevance.

    Something drastic has happened to the Motion Picture Academy in the past ten years. If Beauty And The Beast had been released in 2007, it wouldn't have been nominated for Best Picture (ignoring the Animated Film Category for comparison's sake) but I am sure it is a better film - and film experience - than most of the Best Picture nominees for last year. Same goes for The Full Monty, The Shawshank Redemption, The Fugitive and Babe.

    It seems as if after Titanic the Academy has been performing penance for giving so many awards to a "crowd-pleaser".

    If your movie wins an award but no one outside of LA and NYC sees it, does it still deserve to be called "The Best"? If it hasn't reached this point already, to most Americans winning an Oscar soon will be as meaningless as winning a "Palme d'Or". (And I blame the Acting Branch of the Academy for this development.)

    If you can, search out the Tracy Ullmann intro to Born Yesterday in the TCM Media Room. It is from her stint as Guest Programmer last November. She gives a wonderfully biting little rant on actresses and plastic surgery in today's Hollywood. For me, it was one of the highlights of the month.
