  1. "it will take years for the Academy to get over the "Crash" debacle. Last year's "The Departed" was a good start."

Well, I agree that Crash was a poor choice (and also presented a picture of Los Angeles that only rich folks could believe is "reality-based") but I also feel The Departed was disappointing too. The ending of The Departed was ludicrous. It could have been resolved 45 minutes earlier if that was the method they were planning to end it. (I laughed at the elevator sequence.) And then to be insulted with the final scene where a character not seen for an hour suddenly reappears, does his business, walks away and - "The End". "ARRGH!"

One thing in common about the two films is that both films flooded all the Oscar Members (and all the other associated Guild members) with DVD copies of the film. There were over 100,000 DVD copies of Crash sent out in the fall/winter of that year solely with the intention of getting people to see the movie and accumulating nominations. I will say, it is a film that plays very well on a TV.

But one can also point to the Academy's enlargement in recent years of the membership in the Acting Branch of the Academy as part of the problem. The Acting Branch now accounts for about two-thirds of the voting membership of The Academy. And I believe that most of the growth in the Acting Branch was through the recruitment of younger actors

So, when a film with nearly two dozen young "name" actors is competing for Best Picture, friendships and past business relationships with a person in the cast can draw alot of votes - votes that are not based on the quality of the work.

I believe that the Academy did itself some harm by enlarging the Acting Branch so quickly and disproportionately. If Javier Bardem wins an Oscar over Hal Holbrook this month, I will feel my opinion has been vidicated. And Hal Holbrook isn't a "sympathy" selection. Every aspiring actor I know who has seen Into The Wild speaks glowingly of him.

And if anyone is curious, this year No Country For Old Men has flooded the film community with DVDs while There Will Be Blood has only sent other guild members tickets to attend special screenings in a theater. The recipients are given the admonition that the film needs to be seen on the large screen to be truly appreciated. That pattern leads me to think that the Oscar will go to No Country For Old Men. But I'd love to proven wrong (preferably by Michael Clayton. It sounds right up my alley.)

  2. "I am still confused about where to post as I don't want this to happen again." - bio47

I am not one who participates in the Trivia Forum but my impression has always been that the Forum is for any sort of guessing game or brain challenges that members want to create

Because you were offering up your questions as a game for everyone (and you already knew the answers yourself), they were perfectly fine in the Trivia Forums. But it is no breach of etiquette if they appear somewhere else.

But if you are offering open-minded, opinion questions, then they are better suited for Hot Topics or General Discussions.

Either way, glad you are a new member and enjoying yourself "passing the time recuperating in the damned cold".

  3. "As for missing parts of posts--It doesn't seem that anyone has figured out that mystery."

I didn't know that this was still "unknown". In many (most?) cases, the problem lies in having a a "space" at the very start of a line or paragraph. For whatever reason, a hit on the spacebar at the start of a line of text causes the line that follows to become "hidden" when posted. (This may also apply to hits on the "tab" key.) Removing an errant space at the begininng of the line will cause the text to appear as intended when posted.

Some folks try to indent lines of text with multiple hits on the space bar. As far as I know, there is no method of creating indentation to text in these Forums.

Hope this is helpful for those of you whose thoughts have been seemingly evaporating at random.

  4. Say all you bloggers. Have any of you checked out the "gift" TCM has given you this month? It's a "Video Jukebox" for the "31 Days..." event that bloggers can put on their site.

You can find more info (which you all will probably understand better than I) here -

(I also hear you can get text messages from Robert Osborne this month too. Boy, do I feel like a Luddite about now.)

  5. Hi JackBurley -

"Living In The Past" are we?

Fred may be correct about the "all" option. I do know that the Message Board archives are a bit "wonky" since the "upgrade". (I've heard another fix/upgrade is on the way.)

I do think it helps to include the name of a poster when doing your search. And it can sometimes take multiple tries - at different times of the day. Also try different arrangements of the search terms in the window. I recently looked for a post with the press release on the Paramount Leases starting in 2008 and I had to search about five times for it to finally get listed.

But I don't know if one can go back as far as the early years of the decade. There was a major overhaul around 2005 ( hence so few membership dates prior to that year ) and that makes threads from that era hard to locate.

Otherwise "How Are Ya!"? It's great to see your name around here.

  6. PC49 -

These are not the most "viewer friendly" sites for getting the European schedules but they are the only ones that I know of that may have the info you seek.

    This site -

    http://europe.turnerinfo.com/

has links to the Corporate Websites for all Euopean Turner Networks. One of which is TCM.

On the above page you will see a TCM area (with the Clint Eastwood Image) with a drop down window listing various TCM satellite feeds for Europe. I believe one of the following two options will cover Cyprus.

There is one listed as "Pan Euro Middle East and Africa". But you mentioned that you only receive TCM each day after 4pm and this satellite feed is 24-hours/Day. Just in case, here is a direct link to a page with a link to a PDF with the monthly schedule for February 2008.

    http://europe.turnerinfo.com/TCM/PAN/schedules/index.jsp

This daily schedule starts at 600CET so this may not apply.

A second offering is listed as "Central and Eastern Europe". This offers schedules for two different satellite feeds one which is 24-hours/Day and another that runs from 2100 - 0300 CET. You can access the schedule choices here -

    http://europe.turnerinfo.com/TCM/CEE/schedules/index.jsp

But having looked at both options (in a PDF or a 'doc' file) the "short schedule' is just an abbreviated offering of the 24-Hour/Day schedule. For simplicity, I'd download/open the PDF for the entire day.

It is possible that ATHENASAT splits the channel with the Cartoon Network during the day and TCM only in the evening. If that is the case, the 24-Hour/Day PDF schedule may still apply. (This schedule starts at 300 CET)

For February 1st, it lists the titles -

03.00 CET The Fastest Gun Alive - Glenn Ford

04.30 CET Marie Antoinette - Norma Shearer

07.00 CET The Comedians - Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor

If any of this looks familiar for today, then this is the feed you are receiving and you'll have to "edit" the schedule accordingly.

I hope one of these options has what you are looking for. If not, you can look at the other European options available from the first link I provided and hopefully find something that applies to your location/situation. And I suggest you bookmark the page when you find the correct schedule for Cyprus.

If all else fails, I'd contact ATHENASAT. They may know where you can access a TCM schedule for your use.

    Good Luck!

  7. "Last weekend I went to see JUNO at my local Regal cinema and they showed the TCM promo! Very cool to see it on a big movie screen." - SandyKaypax

Thanks for sharing that Sandy. I hadn't heard anyone mention that TCM's promos had been seen in the theaters lately so I wasn't sure if it still was going on.

So, was there any reaction by the audience or was it received just like any other "advertisement" - indifferent at best?

  8. Not that I want to be accused of "piling on" but I, too, am a fan of this film. From the "Cold War" references to the inside film references - grapefruit and all - I find myself grinning more often than not during most of the film. "Put your pants on Spartacus" has been used in these Forums more than once.

I have wondered why name the film One, Two, Three when there is only one scene when Cagney rattles off the laundry list of business needing to be done. (And I love that scene.) I also think the film is ripe for a musical adaptation. It is pretty "musical" in its current form anyway. "The Sabre Dance" will always be intertwined with images from this film for the rest of conscious life.

But what the hell is Red Buttons doing? If there are things deserving to be "thrown away" in the film, I would definitely start with that segment.

  9. "I asked a simple question..." - kriegerg69

Yes you did. It was rather angry sounding and accusatory, but you did ask a simple question.

And the reply, from what I read and "understand", agreed with your opinion (albeit in a oblique and sardonic manner) that the quality of the print of the film was "lacking". But you didn't read it that way and took offense to the poster and their reply. And then you insulted that poster with sarcasm.

Sorry you were disappointed in the showing of the film and that it wasn't in better shape for recording. But you shouldn't take out your frustration on someone who shared your opinion.

So TCM. is it possible to acquire a better print of Castle Of The Living Dead? The print shown yesterday, from what I hear, is kinda shabby. If you have the chance, could you look into this. The Castle fans would appreciate it, I am sure.

  10. papag88 / Mike -

I am happy you found your way into the TCM Forums and pleased you found out how impressed many of us are with the piece you've created. Bravo!

And I hope you were flattered at my suggestion that Chuck Workman may have been involved with the creation of the piece. The caliber of the work is equal to many of his compilations. (And if he is part of your organization, then the jokes on me for not knowing that.)

  11. Do all the titles use "cross generational" / "time travel" plot points? Or is something "spectral" also qualify - like A Portrait Of Jennie.

And is there a "romance" in the science thriller Altered States? There is no synopsis on the film in the tcmdatabase.

    Kyle In Hollywood

  12. "It's a finely choreographed dance of film clips and real set pieces that transition with grace and aplomb."

    So true.

I love the corn stalks sliding by on stage while Cary Grant flees the crop duster on the screen, the train tracks slipping underneath the screen while the "Stand By Me" boys cheer on their scampering friend and the on-stage prison bars that cage Cody Jarrett. But you are correct. The best is definitely the set-transition from the "Raging Bull" boxing ring to the "Some Like It Hot" dance hall. (Love the way the lights reconfigure themselves!)

But what is with the "chandelier" that breaks up the screen after the "North By Nothwest" sequence? Or is it something else that comes down from the rafters and quickly swings about before rising back up out of the frame?

Previous "31 Days..." promos have been included in the "On Demand" menu in the past. So far, this new piece (15 second version) has been included as a "trailer" attached to new films added to the "On Demand" menu but not as a "stand alone" selection. I hope the two-minute version of the promo is made available there this year. (And Time-Warner adds it to the line-up.)

I also think this piece would be a "traffic-stopper" if it was shown on the jumbo screens in Times Square and Hollywood Blvd. Even without the "soundtrack, it is so visually interesting that it would demand to be watched by passers-by. (Do TCM pieces still run in movie theaters on occassion? Any one seen one lately? I remember posters sayng that the "TCM Credit Roll" was showing in theaters for awhile?)

    Kyle In Hollywood

ps - I think this piece has an original score.

  13. fishandchips23 -

None of us here are too familiar with the European/Asian/African feeds of TCM but I'll do my best in your search for a schedule.

    Go to this page -

    http://europe.turnerinfo.com/

On this page there are links to multiple Turner International Networks. In the section devoted to TCM (with the Clint Eastwood picture) there is a drop down menu listing all the separate European, et.al. satellite feeds - one of which is "Pan Euro/Middle East/Africa" . Let's assume that the UAE is covered by this regional version of TCM.

Highlight the above selection and hit "go". This will take you to a Corporate Page for this particular feed of TCM. On this page, there is a menu on the left side of the page that includes a page for accessing schedules. Click on it and you will find a page offering PDF downloads of schedules for January and February that should correspond to the Middle East satellite feed.

If this is the correct satellite feed, you should be good to go (Does The Champ, Ben-Hur, IVictor/Victoria and I Am A Fugitvie From A Chain Gang sound familiar for January 29th?) and you might want to then bookmark that page and check back every month for a current schedule.

If, for some reason, this schedule doesn't correspond to your particular TCM satellite feed, I would explore some of the other International TCM options accessible from the the first link I gave above. That page may not be the most user-friendly site where to find the schedule info but it is the only one that I know of.

    Good Luck.
