  1. ChasR -

*Zorro Rides Again* will resume right where it left off beginning Saturday, September 3rd. The serial will finish up in early October at which point TCM will then begin showing *Zorro's Fighting Legion* every Saturday morning.

The serial was put "on hiatus" during August due to TCM's "Summer Under The Stars" Festival when the channel turns over all 24 hours every day to a single film star.

  2. *" Do you think they can do 24 hour tributes like Rooney and Bogie from the last two Decembers?"* - audreyforever

If you think TCM can come up with a list of 48 (or so) films to show, then it could be a 24-hour-a-day event.

And I think TCM did show *The Baroness and The Butler* this past April during an evening devoted to Annabella. It may still be available to them for use in December.

  3. *"One thing I can't figure out is - now the Code of Conduct announcement says - Aug. 8 (posted). Does that mean that it's different yet again? (than the one dated Aug. 3)"* - cinemafan

I saw that "new date" today too. I didn't look at the announcement but guessed the "update" only reflects correcting the typo / mis-spelling that was pointed out yesterday. (Attach vs. Attack) I don't think there was any substantial change to the CoC overnight.

  4. *"The posts that are no longer available cannot be restored to the forum. At some point in the past, the decision was made to archive older posts to improve the performance of the board."* - Michael/WebAdmin

I may be wrong but it is possible that 'mr6666' is referring to a different "archive".

Prior to the recent upgrade in March, a list of a member's ten most recent posts was found on the member's Profile Page. It disappeared in the upgrade, returned for a short period of time and then disappeared again. Many members used that feature to track their own posting history and to see what threads in which Forums they had responded to the last time they were logged in to the Forums.

With discussions that don't always hew closely to a thread's subject line and such a large number of active (and overlapping) Forums, I can see how that ability would be useful for some visitors to the Forums. (Where was that discussion on the achievements of Michael Bay? Hot Topics? General Discussions? Film and Filmmakers? Documentary Films?)

I think that "archive" is the one that 'mr6666' was referring to when he posted. If not, I do know that there are members here who would be very happy to have that "Most Recent Posting History" list returned to their Profile page. And you might find it handy too.

  5. *"What I, and apparently almost everyone else, am not interested in is the endless repetition of films that have have already been shown so many times."* - GR

I wouldn't say that. There seems to have been an interest in many warhorses shown so far this month. *Citizen Kane*, *Random Harvest*, and *The Postman Always Rings Twice* were popular with this membership as were the Lucille Ball features shown this past weekend during the centennial of her birth.

Besides, it's August when TCM celebrates the careers of 31 great and near-great movie stars. In this context, TCM is gong to show *The Apartment* when celebrating Shirley MacLaine. It comes with the "SUTS" territory.

*"While no one is forcing us to watch these "war horses", this is beside the point."*

Why is that "beside the point"? No cable channel is programmed to be watched 24/7. If you are "bored" with what TCM is showing, there are other options for your viewing pleasure. (Netflix!) And because TCM doesn't sell advertising, one can turn the channel without it harming TCM with lower viewership numbers. They don't mind. Really.

Nor is TCM programmed with the expectation that all its viewers have DVRs to record any and every film it shows. Just because *Casablanca* was on in the afternoon last month won't, nor should it, exempt TCM from showing it in the evening this month. It is quite the feat that TCM isn't repeating a single film all month. Name another movie channel that shows 350+ different films in any given month.

*"(W)hat this does is rob us of what we are paying for with a cable TV subscription."*

If you have been a TCM subscriber for all of the 17 years it has been around, TCM has received from you something in the area of $38. (That's using 2008 subscription prices for simplicy's sake.) That's not $38 for each year but $38 over 17 years. One can spend that much on two seats at the movie theater in most large cities. I hardly think anyone has been fleeced by TCM.

*"It is as though TCM is simply going through the motions, instead of actively taking pains to keep from insulting its long-standing fan base.:*

Speak for yourself. If you're insulted with the "Summer Under The Stars" programming, so be it. But I think "the long-standing (though I think most are sitting while watching TCM) fan base" is excited and feels very rewarded when TCM chooses to dedicate days to Ann Dvorak, Conrad Veidt, Lon Chaney, Jean Gabin and Ben Johnson along side Bogart, Grant and Crawford. And that goes for this membership in particular.

*"So I cannot imagine what TCM hopes to gain by this disgusting approach."*

Are you sure you're "digusted" and not just frustrated? I ask because you seem to treat TCM as the delivery service for your "archival recording project" rather than a television channel that appeals to a large cross section of vierwers. TCM's purpose will always lie with the latter group. And your expectations will often go unfulfilled. But that isn't TCM's fault.

  6. *"THE SHIEK (1921) is PD and THE SON OF THE SHIEK (1926) was a United Artist release."* - Scottman

*The Sheik* is PD? Really? Wow.

I am more familiar with the posters than the films and I knew *The Sheik* from it's poster's tagline - "It's A Paramount Picture" - but never thought that it was PD.

And I just assumed that a sequel to *The Sheik* would have come from Paramount too.

And don't be too red faced about having missed Lynn's message. (BTW- Thanks Lynn.) She sneeks in and out quickly.

  7. *"Drooling over the color schemes in these two posters, Kyle..."* - JackFavell

Ya never see purple put to good use anymore - except at a Prince concert.

*"such a gorgeous image of George O'Brien..."*

I added that one last week too when I heard all the squeals for O'Brien during the first week of postings.

But I tell ya. I'm having a hard time keeping up with you gals. I mean, where did this George O'Brien crush come from? Last I heard it was all about this guy -

  8. I'll give this image posting fix a try out.

Here's an image posted using 'flickr's hyperlink format in "Plain Text" -

    Copy of Kapralik025

(This format works in other Forums)

And here's the same image using the "Exclamation Point" markup in "Plain Text" -

    Kyle In Hollywood

    Added Edit -

Obviously the "hyperlink" format above doesn't work in "General Discussions" even though using that format works in the other TCM Forums. And both of the images do "appear" when previewing the message before posting!

But the "Markup" format functionality is an improvement.

  9. I woke up extremely early this morning and saw a bit of *Sweet Music*. It wasn't "out of sync" while I was watching - but the "bug"/logo never went away for the five minutes or so that I watched. It was present during all of Vallee's song and all of Dvorak's dance routine.

Never noticed the "bug" being continuously up that long before. Weird.

  10. *"scsu1975 - I'll look into that and get back to you ASAP."* - Michael/WebAdmin

Just to be clear, links created today to "old threads" should function. But links found _in_ old threads are broken.

    See here -

    http://forums.tcm.com/message.jspa?messageID=8013984#8013984

    The above link should work.

That message linked to above contains links like below -

    http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/message.jspa?messageID=7973260#7973260

    which no longer work.

This address format difference also affected links to articles and other pages on the website and not just the Message Boards.

If one wants to create a new thread on an "old topic" and reference a previous thread, all one need do is "right click" on the original thread's

"Original Post" link in the blue banner at the top of the thread and then select "Copy Shortcut". One can then paste that "shortcut" into the new message and it should work fine.

I do know member 'VP19' has/had issues with the "old links" that she had in posts at her blog. But I think they were all in the format above that no longer works or something similar.

  11. *"Another thing is the policy to not allow new posts to threads over a year old. This strikes most of us as kind of weird..."* - VX

"I'll support you on that one." - clore

I (and hopefully others) remember a past member that would drag out many long-dormant threads populated with comments from long-departed members. When doing this, often the member only added facile or inoccuous new comments of their own to the old threads. ("I love her too!") This behavior had the effect of pushing many current and active discussions off the front pages of the Forums and cluttered the listings with discussions that no one was really interested in. But it kept this member's name on the Forum Front Page and often as the last poster on most threads.

This is also why a 24-hour editting time limit was imposed. Said past member would bring up their old threads to the top of the lists by making a small or meaningless edit to one of their posts.

It was all very frustrating for many here as a lot of members were actively avoiding engaging with this one member. But when that member's name is seemingly everywhere in virtually all disussions, it had the effect of driving members away rather than participate in Forums dominated by one particular person.

But with the arrival of a new Moderator, I am all for any re-assessment of policy.

  12. *"I just read on wiki that Phantasm was rated X ? i thought "X" rateding was something else."*

In 1979, a general release film in the US shouldn't have had an "X Rating". I think that rating was already co-opted by the porn industry by that date.

On the TCMDatabase page for *Phantasm*,

    http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/18512/Phantasm/

one can learn that the film was released in the US with an "R rating". But, in the UK it was released with an "X rating" - which there means "Adults Only". The UK only has two designations - "G" and "X". So many general release films are rated "X" in in the UK.

I bet the wiki writer was British and referring to the UK rating.

  13. *"Can anyone let me know what specifically is new in this new Code?"* - cinemafan

Well, I'm not sure. But the message with the CoC is dated as being posted on "August 3rd" so we were thinking that something was "new" or different.

I admit it had been quite awhile since I looked at the CoC. If it was part of the "old" CoC, I definitely didn't remember "Section #1" being there as it is written now.

Nor do I recall an explicit warning/statement such as this -

"TCM reserves the right to terminate your membership and/or delete your profile if you violate the Code, or engage in unanticipated activity that is illegal, harassing, annoying to other members or which is otherwise disruptive to other users, even if such conduct is not specifically prohibited in this Code."

If someone else remembers reading that in a prior CoC, let me/us know.
