  1. *" How could I have been so silly as to paste hyperlinks without editing the vertical bars into %7Cs?"* - PhygLeGuy

I know you are being tongue-in-cheek there but I didn't do anything "special" myself.

I think I just "right-click / copy shortcut" on the link to Christopher Lee's page when it appeared on the search results list. Or I may have opened the page and copied the URL from the address window. I don't remember.

  2. *"Dr, Shaheen has never seemed to acknowledge the possible reason for such stereotypes being represented in these films."*. - Dargo

What "explanations" do you think there are for including stereotypical portrayals? Personally, I think it is often just a lazy attempt to bring verisimilitude to the story. The stereotype is necessary so that the audience believes the rest of the plot. I'm not convinced that is a valid reason for their use. But it is a likely explanation.

You seem to be wanting him to speak for the filmmaker(s) by offering up their reasons for using stereotypes. And I don't know if that is a fair expectation to place on him. He has been asked to comment about what is on the screen. And what is on the screen are repetitive, mostly negative depictions that became "real" in the minds of many viewers - especially those that have never in their life known a person that celebrates Ramadan - through these consistent reappearances in films.

I have heard him assert more than once this month statements such as "there was never any malevolent intent here" and others that absolve the filmmakers of deliberately expressing bias or prejudice. That's further than I was expecting him to go when attempting to speak for them.

All I expect Professor Shaheen do is speak in reaction to the what these film stereotypes have "said" for decades.

  3. *"These are the words of Professor Shaheen and each quote is pretty concise. I'm not sure what you find so frightening in Professor Shaheen's words that you don't think they should be heard and seen."*

I don't find anything "frightening" in his words. But selective "quotes" lifted from paragraphs or other lengthy statements that lack any context such as when it was said, where it was said and to who it was said doesn't provide me with any information that is truly useful. Such statements can be easily distorted. Just ask Shirley Sherrod.

Such critical thinking toward rhetoric is what I was taught in school.

  4. *"I did a search for BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN on the web site and there was a little blurb about a Frankenstein night that had the first three Universal films and a Hammer title."* - clore

Not wanting to disappoint ya but that "Frankenstein Marathon" you found was seen in 2003. The site archives still contain many links to previous events like that one. I'll try to look up what other films were included that October. I do remember it being a a great month for classic horror films.

A search of upcoming Elsa Lanchester films stops with *The Bishop's Wife* coming up in August. But that doesn't mean *Bride Of Frankenstein* won't make it on to October's schedule yet.

  5. *"But actually, I liked it. The desert, the neon sign, the bus and various other vehicles, all heading for that summer month under the stars."* - MissWonderly

Glad you checked it out. At first I only noticed the clouds. I'm happy I was patient.

I really like how they tweeked the Hotel sign. Where it would traditionally read "No Vacancy" on a hotel neon sign, the TCM version reads "No Commercials". And where a hotel would draw attention to "Color TV", the TCM version reads "Color-B&W". All in all very witty.

Now, to which _films showing next month_ do those vehicles pay "homage"? You didn't think they were just randomly chosen, did you?

  6. *"What are the marks on Lloyd's face? I figured they were light bulbs, but after looking at the largest image, I don't think so."* - smileys

I think the sign is meant to be lit with neon and the holes are where the various neon tubing would emerge on the image. But even I can't "see" any neon tubes on Lloyd's face in the photo. I would think that the neon would have been included before lifting it up on to the marquee and not added later. I don't know for sure but I think that was the intent.

  7. *"I'll leave others to judge what all of this means but at least it provides some other quotes from Professor Shaheen to compliment his commentary in this month's "Arab Images in Film" series."* - Cathy Cartee

Listing inflammatory "quotes" taken out of context and with no links to the source material isn't very helpful to anyone or anything. It is especially provocative when one fails to offer any commentary of their own to explain their reasons for doing so.

Such an action from one who professed to be "filled with trepidation" about joining this community just days ago is, well, amazing.

The result I forsee is this being just one more thread shut down by WebAdmin.

  8. *"While we could be considered, in a way, super fans of the channel many fans are casual viewers and TCM wants to be sure they know that Robert O will return."* - lzcutter

    Yep.

And for RO to be on TCM some nights but not others within the same week could leave many to scratch their heads in confusion. There are viewers that think RO is in the studio every night delivering the intros just like a newscaster.

I am sure there will be mentions of RO's absence and inpending return made by the fill-ins up until that day arrives.

The man has been on TCM every night for 17 years. I don't think making an announcement before each film for 17 days, or so, is that big a deal.

  9. *"I can't find the links to advance the schedule anywhere on the website. I don't know if it's just my computer or what."* - yvesmary

It's not you or your computer.

Because the upcoming schedules are "works-in-progress" and subject to changes, TCM isn't posting links to them on the website. Many people would print the early postings believing them to be "official" and "final" simply because TCM provided links to them. But they weren't. These "early printers" were then unaware of changes made since those pages went up and were disappointed (or worse) when films they were anticipating were suddenly "gone" and not shown - even though they had a "schedule" in their hands saying it was going to be on.

Anyone that printed out the August Monthly Schedule when it first appeared some weeks back have a listing for Linda Darnell's "Summer Under The Stars" day that includes *Hotel For Women* (1939) (I think that was the day it was scheduled) but that film is no longer being shown. That was going to be a notable premiere which, now that it has been removed, is going to disappoint many people. So, to eliminate or at least lessen the number of visitors who print monthly schedules before those line-ups are firm, TCM isn't providing links to them on the site.

But resourceful members here in the Forums have been able to locate the upcoming monthly schedules and post links to these "secret" pages. We discuss and dissect them for interesting theme choices, for films that are premiering or to draw attention to titles that are of interest to this community. This is probably some of the best feedback that the programming departments get about their work coming as it does from some of the channel's most devoted viewers.

If you are looking for schedules to print, the site will only have a link to the current month. But you should be able to find links for upcoming months in "General Discussions" here in the Forums. Just remember that these line-ups are "subject to change" so you may not want to print them out too early. Go ahead and print August but I wouldn't necessarily print September just yet.

  10. I feel for everyone suffering through this week's heatwave. People out here refer to such heat as "Earthquake Weather". Hopefully that won't be the case.

I think the strangest - if not scariest - weather incident lately is the "dust storms" that have enveloped Phoenix. It looks exactly like the one that was created for *Bound For Glory*.

I always wondered how the film knew what it looked like and how it moved. There obviously weren't any "weather/traffic choppers" flying around taking pictures for posterity in the 1920s. At least, I've never seen any early film footage of a dust cloud that showed the height and scope of the phenomena. And I've seen a few documentaries on the Dust Bowl.

I used to be skeptical that the film got it right about the dust cloud. I'm not any longer. I am amazed at how true-to-life it is.

  11. *"William Frawley (although I'm not quite sure about that)"* - helenbaby

You're "good" with that one. Frawley's included.

I think you hit all of them with your list.

If a future "set" are produced, I vote for Ned sparks. And Mary Boland.

  12. *"...THE MISOGYNY. Good grief-- women are stepped on and ridiculed so much more than arabs in this toxic thing."* - trueheart

I only watched the introduction. I didn't watch the film. I've seen enough episodes of "I Dream Of Jeannie" to get an idea of what was ahead. "Yes, Master."

But I don't think Professor Shaeen is wrong to point out that the "servile female" stereotype is a particular "popular" one to attribute to Arab women.

  13. *"Don't you understand, this series is for the stereotypical American who wouldn't know an Arab from a VW bus."* - clore

    That's funny.

But, as to the including of Cleopatra in the series, she _is_ the Queen of Egypt. The leader of the entire Egyptian empire. Her political position as a national leader would seem to validate her inclusion even if her ethnic heritage isn't Egyptian. To be Queen of Egypt is to be Arab/Middle Eastern.
