  1. In a different thread, the head of programming apologised yesterday for the errors that affected the animated shorts (Popeye, etc.) on Thursday evening. Seems there was confusion as to who was responsible for inputting the data for these special shorts into the TCM "playlist". (Short subjects aren't typically part of the feature programming with intros by the studio guests/hosts. They are usually handled by the group that deals with all the between feature promos, etc.)

And another poster wrote about the error-plagued presentation of *Three Son's O Guns* yesterday too. I am sure the head of programming is equally apologetic for that messed up presentation too.

Robert Osborne's absence is as good an "explanation" for these problems as any, I guess. I was blaming the control room staff for having too much champagne while celebrating the stations Emmy nominations which were announced this week.

The monthly schedule for July is accessible through the drop-down menu in the banner at the top of this page. Just click on the link labelled "Month Schedule" and it should open a new window displaying the entire line-up for July.

Complete monthly schedules for upcoming/future months are currently not available.

  3. Interesting that Buster Keaton's "Star Of The Month" stint is taking place on Sunday nights. I don't think I've ever seen TCM do that before. (Though I think a month-long look at Harold Lloyd, with his granddaughter in attendance, that took place on Sundays. But I am not sure if Lloyd was "SOTM" that month.)

And look at all those Keaton shorts. Wow! I've never heard of half of them.

And I hope the "Classic Horror" evenings live up to the name and the quality set with the first evening's line-up. That should please many around here.

  4. *"Sort of like calling people anti-Semities or Pat Buchanan is an excuse to justify ignoring what other posters have to say? Pot meet kettle and black."* - TE

Are you assertring that I called or labelled someone an anti-semite in this or any other thread? If so, find it. I dare ya.

  5. *"This type of complaining about such old material is unheard of to the point of revealing the professor to be a crank."* -

I don't remember you saying the same about TCM presenting *The Birth Of A Nation*, *The Squaw Man*, an Anna May Wong silent film or a Mexican Spitfire feature during past Race And Hollywood events. Nor did you deem the "Shadow Of Russia" series a wasteful exercise even though many of those films were woefully "outdated" and propagandistic. For some reason this series is the burr under your saddle.

Professor Shaheen hasn't told you not to laugh at Bud and Lou just as Donald Bogle didn't tell anyone not to laugh at Amos and Andy. You're free to go about your life and enjoy these films as you will. Just don't think that the characters in any of these films are representative of actual Arabs or Arab Americans. Believe it or not, "Mr. Ripley", some people do.

BTW, what was Danny Thomas doing playing the son of a Cantor anyway?

  6. *"The guy is out of touch and is a borderline crank."* FCD

I can't imagine a more benign person to speak on this subject than Professor Shaheen. He has been so non-confrontational about the subject that it has bored some viewers. He doesn't even take issue with Non-Arabs cast in Arab roles. Nor has he attempted to shame anyone for enjoying these films. He accepts that they are "popular entertaiment" that appeal to many viewers.

But that doesn't mean these films don't contain distorted, stereotypical presentations of Middle Easterners which are, given the dearth of non-stereotyped images, the dominant depictions of their kind. All he has done is put a spotlight on it for two weeks. (With two more to go.)

To label him a "crank' is only an expedient excuse to justify ignoring his observations.

  7. *"The situation is, this is America, not Arabia. In Arabia they make the kind of films the professor would probably like. In America, they make the kinds of films we Americans like."* - FCD

What's this "we Americans" stuff? Just who are you speaking for?

As an American, Professor Shaheen has as much right to criticize the stereotypical images in these cultural artifacts as the next American. As do his children and his grandchildren.

Or are certain persons not "true" Americans in your vision of the country?

In case you haven't heard, the Culture War is over. Pat Buchanan conceded long ago.

  8. Hi Jon -

It's good to see you around here once again.

Glad to know you and your lovely girlfriend had a fine time in Los Angeles at the TCM Classic Film Festival this Spring. And it would be fun to see you again in 2012.

As a momento, here's a photo from the Festival Website that you might like to see -

  9. *"I would hate to see the Silents go. I dont think they are shown enough as it is...."* - Hibi

There is no indication that either "Silent Sunday Nights" or "TCM Imports" are in danger of being removed from the TCM schedule. I don't know why anyone would think they could be threatened.

While those offerings may appeal to only a fraction of TCM's audience, TCM seems to know that such films are popular with a significant number of the viewers/fans of the channel. That's why TCM includes silents and foreign films in the Classic Film Festival selections each year.

And a day of Lon Chaney films coming in August should demonstrate a continued commitment to silent films too.

  10. *"That's called "prejudice". You are pre-judging a lot of people, based on one statement from someone."* - FCD

"Phooey!" - Olive Oyl in *Popeye*

It isn't prejudice if my reaction is based on a _statement_ made by one poster and which was subsequently praised or affirmed by others.

Sorry Fred. That mud won't stick. Nice try though. Want to accuse me of anything else?

No need to publicly apologise to me. We've got a history with one another and nothing could shake that.

But I am concerned that you've been receiving disturbing PMs from some members regarding your postings. That's unacceptable. I hope you forward them to WebAdmin and allow them to review what has been sent to you.

  12. The longer one has watched TCM, the greater the likelihood of not watching the channel for extended periods of time. But I did check in periodically this week to see how Robert Wagner was doing and hear Professor Shaheen's remarks.

I also have a TV viewing routine that keeps me away from TCM primetime during the first few hours every night anyway. (The "West Coast Curse" of being three hours behind in TCM "primetime".) Gotta get my "NewsHour" fix.

  13. *"Unlike Blacks, and possibly Native-Americans, Arabs were not a specifically targeted as some kind of "threat" during this era."*

Now THAT statement tells me everything I need to know about the mindset of some posters here.

*"These films were a product of the era, and Dr. Shaheen is glossing over the present dangers in which Islam poses on our culture and other countries as well."*

Like you completely glossing over the "justification" for Jim Crow laws in this country which were enacted concurrent to the Studio era.

Your fear-mongering would make Professor Harold Hill proud.

Even though the post from 'tcmprogrammr' was a reply to me, it is obviously meant for you. (And I was completely wrong about them being "removed" due to skittishness over content.) I know it doesn't soothe the disappointment though.

    'tcmprogrammr' -

Thanks for speaking up. Your acknowledgement and explanation is appreciated.

  15. *"I'm not sure where, but I recall hearing or reading something several weeks ago that TCM would be running some cartoons (Warner Bros. and perhaps others) during the Arab-theme movies tonight (a night of all comedies)."* - MN

You're quite right. The press releases for this year's "Race And Hollywood" included the cartoons as part of the series.

I have no idea why they weren't shown but I am guessing that who ever promised to deliver them, in the end, didn't or couldn't.

Perhaps the distributor had second thoughts. There may have been a preliminary OK to lease these 'toons' but it subsequently was overruled by a higher up.

I don't think TCM could ever get permission to show certain WB cartoons that have offensive African-American stereotypes in them - even in the context of a series like "Race In Hollywood". And showing these cartoons can be controversial. There are persons sitting in prison today for threatening --Cartoon Network-- Comedy Central over an episode of South Park,

  16. *"I can't stand all of this ludicrous bitching it stirs up in the fickle viewer base."* - JonasEB

    I feel for ya.

I knew this month's "Race In Hollywood" was going to rival "Screened Out" for "outrage" among the closed-minded set and their inability to accept that "the others" see many things differently in Classic Films.

I can't help but think these folks would vilify Donald Bogle for pointing out that, no matter how "humorous" people found him, Stepin Fetchit was a prejudicial and stereotypical image in film history.

I think the very earliest Popeye cartoons produced by the Fleischer Studios for Paramount in the 1930s are owned differently than the later, "Famous Studios" produced cartoons. But that is just a guess.
