  1. *Congratulations* to TCM for its three Emmy nominations announced today

The most ambitious program ever produced by the network, "Moguls And Movie Stars: A History Of Hollywood" is nominated as the year's Outstanding Non-Fiction Series.

The program also garnered nominations for Jon Wilkman for the writing of the series and for Christopher Plummer's wonderful "voice-over" narration.

Bravo to everyone who played a role in bringing the series to TCM.

    Well done and definitely deserved.

  2. It is "Irwin".

I wouldn't be surprised if both Silent Sunday Nights and TCM Imports forgo a host until Robert Osborne returns. Or TCM could hand these franchises over to Ben Mankiewicz on an interim basis.

  3. I didn't see the opening but did catch the closing remarks. That *Lion Of The Desert* was funded by Khadafi and Libyan money was the primary focus of the post-film discussion.

Professor Shaheen made no bones about such funding being responsible for the film failing to attract an audience. He spoke of many prominent critics including this info in their reviews or other articles about the film. He understood how an audience would choose to reject a film because of the Libyan funding.

I don't think Professor Shaheen sounds naive - but the filmmaker certainly had to be if he thought people would overloook that fact.

The outro also had Professor Shaheen expressing his admiration for Anthony Quinn and his perfomance in the film.

  4. *"He is fully aware of the things he's doing that stir the pot, and thus is open to any legitimate criticism of his efficacy in fulfilling the aims of the series."* - David In Seattle

If you believe that, fine. I don't see it.

"I Love Ya, Man", but dragging "Holocaust Deniers" or the origins of the Six-Day War into the discussion here is derailing the aims of this thread.

  5. *"... the thought of TCM start editing movies regardless of reason will go over like a lead balloon. TCM is deticated to unedited movies and it is not considered a Family Channel."* - hamradio

I am sure 'movieman1957' agrees with you. He brought this issue up because the August *Now Playing" guide (mistakenly) lists this R-rated film as being shown at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. (It has since been moved to the over-night hours.) He was only trying to understand how that could happen when TCM won't show R-rated films before 9 o'clock in the evening on the West Coast.

He wasn't asking that the film not be shown or that TCM use an editted version. He saw a "conflict" with the scheduling of that film for the daytime hours and was curious how TCM was going to get away with it.

I have no doubt that he is completely comfortable with TCM showing the film at 4am.

  6. *"I am grateful to TCM for arranging to have some fine classic film "friends" (actors and other personalities) to come sit in for Mr. Osborne while he is away. It is a rare treat (at least for me) to see some of them this way, and to get their "insider" takes on some of the films and stars they will be introducing."* - rohanaka

You''ve brought up an important observation. Having these "Friends Of TCM" and of Robert Osborne take over the reins for a few weeks gives the viewers at home a chance to see how well loved the channel (and Robert) is by so many in the community. One had to go to "The Classic FIlm Festival" or "The Road To Hollywood" events to experience that.

Of other "Friends Of TCM", I'd like to see Eva Marie Saint fill in on a week (During Marlon Brando Day in August?), Tab Hunter, Illeana Douglas and the author Cari Beauchamp.

And if the well runs dry during the dog days of August, I wouldn't mind if some of the TCM Staffers we saw in March were re-enlisted to take over a night or two.

  7. *"The network is run by the liberal idiot Ted Turner..."*

Not for over a decade. Mr. Turner sold all interest in Tuner Networks to Time-Warner long ago.

*"...and hosted by that liberal weeny, Ben Manckiweicz...Ben puts his idiotic, whining liberal opionion where it is not even called for!!"*

Betcha can't name/cite/quote one such incident. Just one.

    I'll be waiting.

  8. Funny that it was still listed for the afternoon when "Now Playing" went to press.

While it is something I don't ever pay attention to, the daily schedule page lists the film with a "TV-14" designation from that TV rating system. I guess that can be a lot "stronger" than PG-13.

Either way, I doubt I'll be watching at 1am that day.

  9. Gee Fred, thanks for the invite to the dinner and discussion. But it was SIX YEARS AGO.

So what was your point in posting all of that outdated information? Just to post the link to "the really nasty stuff" that exists at that website separate from Professor Shaheen's remarks?

True to form, Fred. True to form.

  10. *"Really, that is just ridiculous. TCM is doing no such thing. They are presenting films curated by people offering viewpoints different than a mainstream viewpoint. TCM doesn't necessarily agree, or disagree, with any viewpoint offered, they are just giving us the opportunity to experience this viewpoint,"* - VX

    Agreed.

For the most part, during the first week Professor Shaheen has been illustrating the Arab stereotypes prevalent in these films. These aren't "archtypes" (i.e. - quiet bad guys in westerns wear black hats) but stereotypes meant to represent a race of people and often communicate negative traits about these people to the audience.

But I haven't heard Professor Shaheen assert that Studio chiefs or writers or directors were motivated out of bias or malice when presenting these Arabic characters or Middle Eastern stories. I think he has gone out of his way to NOT make such an assertion about their "true" feelings. Anyone thinking differently is making a leap based on something that isn't there.

  11. It was announced today that Robert Osborne has taken a temporary break from his hosting duties after having minor surgery. TCM's announcement about this development can be read here -

    http://forums.tcm.com/ann.jspa?annID=51

I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread set aside for those coming to the Forums who are wondering "What Happened To Robert Osborne?" or "Why Is Robert Wagner On TCM?"

Beginning tonight (July 11th), there will be a series of Guest Hosts filling in for Robert on a weekly basis. Other "Friends of TCM" acting as Guest Hosts during July include Jane Powell and Tippi Hendren.

While Mr. Osborne won't be introducing films seven nights a week for a few months, he will occasionally still be seen on TCM during special presentations that have already been recorded.

    These include -

    "The Essentials" on Saturday evenings.

"Race and Hollywood" on Tuesday and Thursday in July.

and Guest Programmer night in September (and maybe October.)

This explains why RO is on TCM on Tuesday Night but not on Wednesday. TCM is expecting Robert Osborne to return to his nightly hosting duties in the fall. (About three months.)

If you'd like, this thread already started would be a great place to post messages of good will to Mr. Osborne.

  12. Hibi & Baker -

From the announcement posted here - http://forums.tcm.com/ann.jspa?annID=51 - RO will still be seen on TCM during this break from his hosting duties. Primarily it will be the intros, etc. that were already recorded long in advance.

All the materials for this season of "The Essentials" have been recorded and will continue to be seen every Saturday night. (Soon, the series begins (mostly) repeats until the end of the year.)

All the intros with RO and Professor Shaheen for the Race In Hollywood series have been recorded and will be seen on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

Plus RO should "appear" with the Guest Programmer for September which was probably already recorded long before this break.

So, while RO won't be seen every evening as we've become accustomed, every so often his presence will be seen on the channel over the next three months until he returns to his full-time hosting duties.
