  1. Hi 'audreyforever' -

Are any "WWII" films fair game? Or are you looking primarily for a combat film? If anything goes, I might suggest *Bridge On The River Kwai* or *The Great Escape*. Perhaps you might think of a "Secret Mission" film in honor of the recent events with the Navy Seals in Pakistan and show *The Guns Of Navarone* or *The Dirty Dozen*. (All are nearly three hours long though.)

As to combat films, most of the "best" ones are in B&W. Of those, *Battleground* is my favorite.

  2. *"Hi Kyle, do you think it is possible that they would create the TCM Remembers montages and bank them? I have always thought this was something that was done last minute."* - LoveFilmNoir

While the TCM On-Air group that produce "TCM Remembers" promos are wizards at what they do, I don't know if even they could put together a new piece in less than 12 hours - which was the case with the Jackie Cooper spot which premiered last evening. It just seemed too fast not to have been prepared earlier for broadcast when the day arrived.

    But I could be wrong.

  3. *"When you are invited on a regular basis to TCM's board meetings and can report with certainty on anything having to do with programming, I'll bury my RED FLAGS. (U)ntil then I'll keep them at arms length when I see something that warrants waving them."* - infinite1

*"Naivety (sic) if there ever was!"* - incredibull

The two of you are free to believe anything you want regarding the channel, the website or the staff of TCM. You can also ignore or try to discredit anything I write in response to the opinions you express. All I want to accomplish is making sure that a reasonable alternative to your thoughts/beliefs is provided in the Forums.

I've said it often and will continue to do so - TCM is commited to their mission to showing films uncut and commercial-free from the world's film libraries. Nothing TCM has programmed recently or for the foreseeable future contradicts that commitment or demonstrates a change in operations is forthcoming. That is especially true when Time-Warner's cable outlets - including Turner Entertainment Networks - are once again among the most profitable divisions in the company.

Silly Fred. You give the mods too much credit. They've deleted threads just like these. And you are jumping on Lynn without cause.

There really is no need for a dozen separate threads each linking back to one member's blog. An original thread that is updated as each blog-post is completed works just as well - if not better. All the member has to do is reply to her own original post.

  5. *"...because she was in the play DEAD END, Marjorie Main got to do something for a period of time that made her unique - slap Bogart in the face. One thing wrong with that - Bogart was not in the play."* - clore

I didn't hear the outro and don't know the exact context used. But I am wondering if this isn't an instance of a poorly written set-up for the statement.

From what I 've read here, I am making the assumption that Marjorie Main was given the role in the film *Dead End* because she appeared in the stage version. The role calls for her to slap the character played by Bogart - which she does in the movie. Right, so far?

Now, as to the line about "for a period of time", I don't think this refers to the "run of the play" but to the stretch of time that she was known as being the "Bogart Slapper" from *Dead End* - which, at the time, would be what people would be able to recognize her for doing on screen. Marjorie Main wasn't notable or memorable as a film actress until years later. "Who's Marjorie Main?" "The woman who slapped Bogart." And for that period of time, it's what made her "unique." After *The Egg And I*, Main would be known for her "Ma Kettle" or other roles at MGM. But before those roles came to her, "slapping Bogart" would be her most notorious film appearance.

The reason I am leaning on this interpretation is because the same sort of situation was spoken of a week or two ago at the TCM screening of *From Here To Eternity* with Ernest Borgnine in attendance. He spoke of being known as "the man who killed Sinatra" during the time between *From Here To Eternity* and the debut of *Marty*. He was even threatened by some local Sinatra fans while filming *Marty* because they recogized him for the role of Fatso Judson. I don't know how long a period of time that was between movies but after *Marty* came out, Borgnine didn't need any sort of descriptive introduction to tell persons who Ernest Borgnine was.

Of course, I am only responding on what was written here and not the actual lines said by RO.

  6. *"... But, just what would it take to raise YOUR red flag(?)"*

After having a pleasant and reassuring conversation this past weekend with the new General Manager of TCM (Hi Jeff! Pleasure to meet you!), everybody should toss their red flags into the nearest rubbish bin. Nothing's going to change.

All the Upper Management of Turner Networks know what a wonderful and unique channel they have with TCM. In terms of viewer loyalty, it is (nearly?) unprecedented for a television channel. I doubt that they want to be the one to destroy that while TCM is under their custodianship.

If you are a fan of TCM for the past ten years, the objective is to continue that "tradition" with the same persons in place that have been responsible for instilling such devotion among its viewers.

There is no need for any angst, worry or cynicism - unless one chooses to be. The future of TCM will be much like its past.

  8. One of the many highlights of the 2011 TCM Classic Film Festival for me was the display on Club TCM of some amazing original film posters. There were about two dozen posters of various sizes on display in the room, all from the collection of graphic artist Mike Kaplan.

The most striking were the Original "French Grandes" Posters, hanging in frames with posters on both the front and back sides.

The images measured 47" x 63". That's 4ft by 5ft! Every time I passed through Club TCM I couldn't help but stop and gaze and these remarkable posters. Thanks to Mike Kaplan for lending these wonderful posters to the Classic Film Festival and Bravo to TCM for presenting them during the festival. I hope to see more someday.

  9. There's a rumor speading like wild fire around the Classic Film Festival in Hollywood that TCM is going to sponosr a Classic Film Cruise as soon as this winter - and it will be an East Coast departure. Hmmm. Sounds like TCM is more than pleased with the response to the Classic FIlm Festival and is ready to expand with similar events.

I bet Nicky Ferrante is already booking passage.

  10. *"(D)oes anyone have actual experience with this procedure, and have any insider tips?"* - Alistair

I don't have any insider tips nor have I attended many popular screenings (so far). But, as a veteran attendee, I would suggest trying to attend films in the very large Chinese Theater (1100 seats). Of the events you listed, screenings on Saturday of *Citizen Kane* (It was announced that Norman Lloyd will be in attendance to speak about the film) and perhaps *Gaslight* may have the best chances of selling individual seats. If it does interest you, Julie Andrews will appear at the screening of *Breakfast At Tiffany's* in honor of her late husband Blake Edwards and is showing between the two films you listed.

*All about Eve* is showing in the largest of the Mann theaters (with 477 seats) but a Bette Davis film will likely be very popular with passholders.

Public/General Admission seating is $20.00 for each screening, There are no Public/General Admission tickets sold for events in Club TCM. Club TCM is reserved for passholders only.
