  1. *"I just read in some trivia book that a very young Andy Williams dubbed Lauren Bacall's singing voice in films. Does anyone know if this is true?"* - TikiSoo It looks like it is true - to a certain point. And depending on who you listen to. ------ Lauren Bacall - (Reprint of interview in Premiere Magazine, 1996) http://www.livefastdieyoungbook.com/premierebacall.htm *Is it true your singing voice was dubbed in To Have and Have Not by Andy Williams?* Supposedly he dubbed one note. But he didn't dub a whole song, because I know how many times I recorded those songs. You can just listen to it and know it's me. It's possible he dubbed one note, but I don't know which one. A higher one probably. ------- Andy Williams - (Interview in U.K. Newspaper, 2001) http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/profiles/all-hail-the-emperor-of-easy-702674.html In Williams's mid-teens, the boys found work in Hollywood. Williams's first recording was backing Bing Crosby for "Swinging On A Star". Then, I prompt, you dubbed Lauren Bacall's singing voice in To Have And Have Not. Williams grimaces slightly. "I did, but I wish that had never been written, because she came out later with a book that said... Well, they eventually took me off the track because it didn't sound enough like her." It would've seemed strange, hearing your voice coming out of a woman's mouth. "But it really happened. I was at Warner Brothers being in a movie with my brothers - we were always two soldiers or something - and I went in to get permission from the head of the music department to go play baseball, because I'd done my schoolwork. His back was to me, and I called, 'Mr Chambers, I'd like to...' and he turned and said, 'That's the voice I've been looking for!'. I was 14, my voice was rather high for a man, but slightly low for a woman. So they took me over to a sound stage - huge screen, Lauren Bacall's face on it, she was beautiful. First movie she ever made. I looked up, and her lips were moving. They said, 'We'll start again, and you sing along'. "I think they used it in previews. But there was one line they dubbed in that she actually said: 'Who can tell?'" He sings the bar now, softly: "'Maybe it happened this way/ Maybe we really belong together but, after all/ How little we know... Who can tell?' She said the line she spoke didn't match. Bacall apparently didn't sing well enough to get her through the whole song, but they clipped single lines together and I assume that's what you hear now. Still, it makes me look as though I'm saying something that isn't true." ------- Kyle In Hollywood

  6. *"Guess I'll just have to refudiate you for it..."* - VX And here I was going to quote F. Murray Abraham at the end of *Amadeus* - "I speak for all mediocrities in the world. I am their champion. I am their patron saint." "Mediocrities everywhere... I absolve you... I absolve you... I absolve you... I absolve you... I absolve you all." But I like yours better. 7. *"Delightful!"* - M'Lady Minya Glad you approve. Over the past three years, I've posted the original One-Sheet. the Original 3-Sheet and a very rare Original 6-Sheet poster for the film. All of which are breathtakingly beautiful. (I think I've even posted some foreign posters too.) But, plain as it is, the simplicity and "joy" in today's image made me smile so I was happy to add it to the Gallery. *"...I'm up abnormally early for a Saturday (apparently even after being back for two days, my internal clock is still resetting itself from UK time..."* Ack! You left for London and have returned! And I didn't have the chance to post a send-off for you. I can't believe I let that slip by. (And that you didn't remind me!) I hope you had a wonderful time, M'Lady and were treated like the Bond Girl that I know you are. Or Lady Marian, if you prefer. 8. *"Just in case, program your DVR to run long enough to record the entire, uncut film. More than once an edited version has been listed, but a full length version shown."* - VX Not a bad strategy. Definitely worth the effort. I think TCM was anticipating having the 145m version to show. The time slot for the film does last two and a half hours. But with the shorter version,TCM has resorted to showing two long "short subjects" to fill nearly 45 min after *Joan Of Arc*. 4:14 PM (PST) *Short Film: Service With The Colors* (1940) C-21 mins, 4:39 PM (PST) *Short Film: Sons Of Liberty* (1939) A patriotic short chronicling the efforts of underground leader and military financier Haym Salomon during the American Revolution. Starring Claude Rains as Haym Salomon. Directed by Michael Curtiz. Cast: Claude Rains Dir: Michael Curtiz C-21 mins, *Joan Of Arc* is also scheduled to be shown on March 12th - and is again set to fill a 150m timeslot. Maybe TCM can get the long version for showing by then. Kyle In Hollywood

  10. *"As explained here awhile back by TCMProgrammr..."* - lzcutter Here ya go kiddo - Posted Five Years Ago Today - but still relevant and true as far as I (or 'lzcutter') know - "How many Films are in the TCM Library?" http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/click.jspa?searchID=339160&messageID=7781431 "It's a very complicated answer. Ted Turner bought the RKO, MGM pre-1986 and Warner Brothers pre-1948 libraries in the late '80s, which total about 3,500 films. When TCM launched in 1994, that was considered the "Turner library" and that was the basis for the newtork. However, in the late '90s, Turner merged with Warner Brothers, and since then they (Warner) have been the official owners of that collection of libraries. However, TCM does have an agreement with them (Warner) to play films from that library, although it isn't unlimited access in the way that it used to be. In addition, we license films from all of the other studios and independent distrubutors. As it is, about 65% - 70% comes from those 3,500 titles, and the rest come from other sources." *tcmprogrammr* February 26, 2006 If TCM has a "library", it is an ever-evolving one in which some films are added while others are removed for extended periods of time. This is what Robert Osborne was likely referencing. But none of the titles are the exclusive property of TCM - save for the "Lost And Found RKO" titles. Kyle (shut in for the weekend) In Hollywood
  11. *"So, why do the pay channels have "mirrored" Satellite feeds if they are not commercial channels? They are not selling ads on THEIR programming."* - infinite1 I don't know what the thoughts of premium channels is on such things. But I do know that premium channels are getting many dollars from their subscribers each month while TCM is getting dimes. That may have something to do with it. Kyle In Hollywood

  13. I'm not surprised AMC is doing an Oscar-fest - Many channels do the same thing in February - so that isn't really a "rip-off" in my mind. But The Sundance Channel did program some event a few years back and called it "31 Days of..." (I don't remember what the subject was though. It could have been "31 Days Of Documentaries" or "31 Days of Sundance Festival FIlms". I really don't remember.) And _that_ struck me as a rip-off of TCM's title and concept. And does no one here have any "love" for AMC's former host Nick Clooney? I was surprised no one here even brought up his recent appearance on the new Piers Morgan Show when he appeared along side his son George. I was hoping someone would watch it and offer up a report on the conversation. Kyle In Hollywood Edited by: hlywdkjk on Feb 24, 2011 6:59 PM
  14. Rey - What he is getting at is not alternative versions of TCM but a separate East Coast and West Coast satellite feed of TCM from Atlanta. About five years ago, TCM began the process to provide a West Coast feed so that "Prime TIme" programming was shown at the same hour as the East Coast feeds. (i.e. - all Robert Osborne introduced films would also start at 8pm on the West Coast.) But the plan was shelved shortly before it was to be implemented. No explanation for was given for abandoning the change. But "mirrored" satellite feeds (same programming at 8pm) are really only important for commercial channels that are selling ads on their programming. With no advertisers able to buy time on specific TCM programs, the need for two feeds of TCM is negligible. And the additional cost of providing a second feed (a second server with the programming, a second satellite dish to beam the signal and space on a satelite circling the globe) brings no financial benefit to the channel. The money could be better spent in other areas - especially when TCM had to begin leasing _all_ the films for the channel. Kyle In Hollywood
  15. *"I believe the film you are referring to is the Richard Quine directed drama, "Full of Life." It was a nice little film about a couple dealing with childbirth. Judy costarred with Ricahrd Conte as her husband and a fine supporting performance by Salvatore Baccaloni as the father-in-law."* - MovieProfessor "Yes, that's it. Hopefully they'll bring it up from the salt mines for an airing some year soon..." - JohnnyGeetar *Full Of Life* is showing on TCM Friday, March 11th. Kyle In Hollywood

  17. *"How would you know this?"* Simple deduction leads me to believe it is so. There was an offensive message posted yesterday. I replied to it. ValentineXavier replied to it. Helenbaby replied to it. There may be others that replied also. What is missing today? The offending post and all those replies. That's what I have observed. And this is why I posted to others that seemed upset that their messages were missing even though none of the replies were offending or in vioaltion of any conduct - that I could see. I have observed this pattern for a long time. Kyle In Hollywood
  18. To those curious about deleted posts over night - I've seen this happen before. It appears that a particular post was removed. Undertaking that act of "clean-up" also included removing all posts that were in reply to the offending message or posts that quoted parts of the offending message. The missing replies were not necessarily objectionable- they were only "collateral damage." And the posters whose posts went missing are likely not in any jeopardy of being reprimanded. 19. *"YOU MEAN YOU ACTUALLY HAD A BEEF WITH TCM?????? I'M SHOCKED."* - infinite1 See.
