What a wonderful group of events for Club TCM. What I want to know is -
How are we expected to go watch movies every day too?

OK all us Left-Coasters!
The TCM Classic Film Festival "Road To Hollywood " series of FREE screenings is getting ever closer to Hollywood,
Passes for the FREE screening of *Elmer Gantry* in San Francisco are still available (as of Wednesday Night, April 6th). The screening is Wednesday, April 20th at the historic Castro Theater and will be hosted by Ben Mankiewicz with Special Guest Shirley Jones in attendance.
And on Thursday morning (April 7th), passes to the FREE screening of *From Here To Eternity* become available for download. This screening at the Egyptian Theater will also be hosted by Ben Mankiewicz with Special Guest Ernest Borgnine in attendance.
The passes can be found here -

Don't say I didn't warn ya.

*"Kyle, where would poor little lost movie fan with a Classic Pass find such a .pdf file?"* -
JackBurley (Haven't written that name in a LONG time.)
You can find a screening list pdf here -
http://news.turner.com/press_kits_detail.cfm?presskit_id=235&press_section_id=2586
And then click on the "download pdf" at the top of the column.
It is a very thorough listing of screenings and some special events. But not everything announced or published so far has made it into this pdf file. Some Special Guests, in particular, are not included. (No mention of Chris Isaak or Mary Ann Mobley, for instance.) But it does state that Peter O'Toole's Hand & Foot Print ceremony will take place on Saturday.
Still, this pdf may become "outdated" again soon. I've heard a rumor there are more "surprises" yet to come.
Brace yourself.

Now THAT is cool. I hope he is going to sing. A poolside "concert" before the film would be great fun.

Well, you know. "Popular" is a really subjective term. But believe me. You will have more than enough "popular" events to choose from at any given time of the day.
For example, all these events were happening concurrently on Friday afternoon last year -
*Sweet Smell Of Success* w/ Tony Curtis
*Carmen Jones* hosted by Dandridge biographer Donald Bogle
*The Big Trail* (1930) (restored early John Wayne film) and one of the few westerns shown last year.
"Moguls And Movie Stars" Documentary Sneak Preview
"Peter Bogdanovich and Leonard Maltin - a Conversation" in Club TCM
or these events on Saturday Morning -
*Treasure Of The Sierra Madre* with Angelica & Danny Huston
*Leave Her To Heaven* (restored Technicolor Print) with Dwayne Hickman
"Festival Shorts" (Selected Short Subjects) curated by Leonard Maltin
*Pillow Talk*
"Joan Crawford's Home Movies" hosted by her grandson Casey LaLonde in Club TCM
or these on Saturday Afternoon -
*North By Northwest* with Eva Marie Saint
*Crimes And Misdemeanors* with Angelica Huston
*A Woman's Face* with Casey Lalonde and Illeana Douglas
*Safety Last* with accompaniament by the Robert Israel Orchestra
"A Conversation with Norman Lloyd" in Club TCM
Each of those events were "popular". And I don't think any passholder was turned away from any of them.
I am sure the selection of events this year will be equally varied and equally interesting to the passholders so that they spread themselves out among all the events each day. It is the individual ticket buyers that will likely have a difficult time seeing things this year. There may not be alot of empty seats to sell individually.
Have you chosen a few "must-see" events for yourself from those that have been announced so far? At the top of my list is *The Cameraman* followed by "Reds", the Peter O'Toole interview and *West Side Story*. For "fun", I could easily attend *Now, Voyager*, *One, Two, Three* or *Citizen Kane* and be happy. Or *Gold Diggers of 1933*, *The Ghost And Mrs. Muir* or *Gaslight*.
I think a lot of us from the Forums are looking forward to the screening of *The Cameraman*. If it interests you, you should plan on joining us.

*"just curious .. does anyone have any idea how many passes were available at the different levels? I couldn't begin to guess and was just wondering what sorts of numbers we're talking about. Any clue how many attended last year's festival?"* - Wolfie
I haven't a clue how many passes were available at each level this year. And I don't know how many were set aside at each level last year. But "Spotlight" and "Essentials" passes are limited to the number of available seats in the Chinese Theater after setting aside seating for all Special Guests of the Film Festival, other specially invited guests or other "friends" of TCM. I know that there were many Turner Network Executives at the screening of *A Star Is Born* last year along with other local industry folks. And many of the Special Guests of the Film Festival were in the audience watching that first night too. "VDOVault" "bonded" with Eli Wallach and "SueSue" was seated next to/near Juanita Moore.
"Unofficially", attendance last year included 2000 passholders and 3000 individual ticket purchasers which combined for an approximate total of twenty thousand "admissions" to all of the screenings. (That includes admittance by passholders and individual purchasers. One passholder attending four screenings a day over four days would total 16 "admissions".)
With last year's passholder total being 2000, I am guessing that this year that number will be exceeded by about 500 more persons. The near immediate "sell out" of the Roosevelt and the cessation of sales of the top three pass levels leads me to believe that. But not to worry. TCM has (likely) capped the total number of all passes available to be the number of all available seats at all screenings/events at any given hour in the day. There will be something for every one holding a pass to see or attend at all times.
Needless to say, there will be a lot of Classic Film Fans in Hollywood this month. The Boulevard will never be the same again.

*"What is the numerical order system you mentioned? Do people get assigned a number when they get in line?"* - Wolfie
Yes. That is exactly what it is.
But it was "hit and miss" last year as some theaters/screenings used the number system for those waiting in line while others did not.
Kyle In Hollywood
-
*"How long before the start of each film are spotlight pass holders typically allowed to enter the theater?"* - hulaskater
Spotlight Passholders can skip to the front of any line that has formed outside a theater. They will be the first ones to enter any screening. They may have a window of about ten minutes when only they can enter, but I am not sure. I do think, once any Spotlight Pass holders waiting for the doors to open (or in that ten minute window) have been allowed in, then the other passholders are allowed to enter - albeit slowly and maybe only by numerical order, (if the number system is enacted again this year.) And during this time, any Spotlight Passholders who arrive while there are still seats available will still be allowed to go directly to the front of any line that is still waiting to enter.
*"How about non-spotlight holders?"*
See above. But allow yourself additional time to line-up outside the smallest of the Chinese6 Theaters to guarantee yourself a seat to a screening you really want to attend. Arriving "only" 30 minutes before the start of a screening may not be enough time to get a seat in those small theaters. And with so many more passholders attending the Festival this year, that may also hold true for screenings at the larger theaters. We'll have to wait and see.
(And if anyone has a better insight to the question, please speak up.)

Here's a link to the webpage for the Los Angeles ABC affililate's program titled "Eye On L.A."
http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=resources/eye_on_la&id=8048478
Tonight's edition featured "Los Angeles' Most Iconic Places" and included insider visits to Hollywood icons like Grauman's Chinese Theater, The Magic Castle and The Jim Henson Studios (formerly Chaplin Studios.) Each of these places are "foot-friendly" (walking distance) for any Classic Film Festival visitor. The program is a great intro to the neighborhood and other parts of L.A. that may be of interest to any attendees that find themselves with some extra time on their hands that weekend. (I am thinking any "Matinee Passholders", in particular.) A visit to the Magic Castle would be a wonderful way for a Matinee Passholder to spend a Friday or Saturday evening.
There are separate video links for each of the Hollywood segments along with other "Icons" featured in the show - like Griffith Observatory, Capitol Records and Fred Segal on Melrose.
Give it a look.

*"Looking over Kyle's latest notice and the .pdf, I'm thinking I'll end up skipping most screenings and just go to the conversations and introductions (though I must see Hoop-La, Dodsworth, Girl Crazy, and a few others)."* - JackBurley
If you go over to the Festival site and scan the "Complete List Of Films" closely, you might notice a few more additions to the schedule - including vintage Cagney and Edward G Robinson! - that may tempt you into staying for a film. (Yes, there's more films on the list!) What do you think of Betty Grable?
