  1. *"From what I saw on the site the passes are all sold out but the day ones. Is this correct and I've waited too long?"* - wouldbestar

That is the rumor I've heard.

The site won't sell you a pass online. But there is also phone number listed for the box office. Go ahead and call it direct and see what they say over the phone. Give it a try. What can it hurt?

  2. *"If the object is to make money selling DVDs of movies (and would anybody deny that this is the object of TCM?), then why should it even bother to employ this meaningless(?) terminology to hawk its wares?"* - musikone

You really think TCM exists to market and sell copies of DVDs that it does not own and on which other entities make the vast majority of the profit? Seems like a very expensive method (television network/website/etc.) of marketing. And on top of that, TCM is "giving away" the product every time they show a film.

TCM as a 24-hour informercial. Now THAT'S a new one.

  3. Hi Dominique -

I don't know what "dressed up" (or mildly dressed up) means to a 16 year old these days. And that isn't your fault.

I wouldn't think of the evening as a "red carpet gala" but I think if you treat the evening like a swell party and dress accordingly, you'll be fine and have just the right amount of fun. I will also say that I expect most everyone else will be at the screening in comfortable casual clothes.

*"Also, how quickly does the theater fill up if I arrive 2hrs early would I be able to get a good seat?"*

I don't know. It is NYC so it is hard to say how early (or late) people will arrive. You might try to find a phone number for the theater at the SVA and find out what time the doors will open that evening and then plan accordingly. But I would bet two hours before would be more than enough time for a good seat. Maybe not GREAT,but a good one. (Is your Dad up to standing in line two hours?)

Have a great time this Saturday. And please check back in here and let us know how it went, OK?

  4. *"I don't know if TCM has a poll for movie genres, but I want (NEED) to go on record as hating the movie line up today (3/28/11). I was born in the 60s so maybe I am just not "getting this" trend of TCM to broadcast movies from the 1960s and 70s that I can see in a thousand different venues..."* - Debwill2

"Tomorrow is another day." And that would be today.

I hope Warner Baxter and Jean Harlow are more to your liking.

You need to know that the "Not Suitable..." notice was a required addition to posters in Australia for all films that were not considered "child-friendly". In the Thirties, Forties and Fifties, that covered a lot of motion pictures.

The use of that notice is one way I can tell country of origin (Australia) for many English-language posters. If it wasn't on the poster for *In Which We Serve*, I might think the poster was for a UK release of the film.

  6. The 2011 TCM Classic Film Festival continues to grow into an event of EPIC proportions!

After bringing some true "classic" Hollywood excitement to the recent Oscar ceremony, actor Kirk Douglas is scheduled to appear at the TCM Classic Film Festival. Prior to a screening of *Spartacus*, Mr. Douglas will appear along side Robert Osborne for a conversation and the showing of clips from his one-man show, "Before I Forget".

  7. *"TCM "owns" a library. Robert Osborne thinks so, TCM employee Megan Buckle-Robinson of Network Operations thinks so, Fred thinks so, and now even Kyle, on some level, agrees that there is one."* - infinite1

Change "owns" to "has" and I will agree to that statement. I agreed to that long ago in some other thread. But if you're insistent on using "own", then you are still wrong.

  8. I have a collection of films in my apartment. They are recordings I have made from television over many years and take up lots of shelf space. I refer to these copies of films as my "library". But I am not the owner of the films. I only have a copy of the film that belongs to me.

TCM has a collection of films in Atlanta. They are recordings created for its use on the channel. These copies belong to TCM for as long as they have the right to air them on the channel. As referred to by Robert Osborne and other TCM staffers, these recordings would be the contents of "TCM's Library" - even though TCM does not own them.

The original films are the property of the films studios and are in salt mines across the country. The archive prints of those films which are used to make the copies for DVDs or broadcast on TCM are stored in warehouses in Burbank, Universal City and other locales in Southern California.

If it is OK for me (and every member here) to refer to the collection of film recordings in our homes as a "library", then it is OK for TCM to do the same in regards to the copies they have in Atlanta. And that is all that is meant by the term "library".

  9. *"Since I don't agree with some of what she did or who she hung out with, especially the pervert Michael Jackson, I'm have a hard time wrapping my arms around all this glory she is getting for her charity work. Give me a frikken break! She was a movie star, a good actress and a human being like the rest of us. Nothing more."* - SoCalGal16

You must not have been around in 1980. That's the only reason I can think of for such callousness.

But I hope you feel better about yourself after expressing your feelings as you did.

Good News for you about Peter O'Toole!

TCM Press Release - Release Date: 3/17/2011

*Peter O?Toole to Join Hollywood Royalty at 2011 TCM Classic Film Festival*

Irish-Born Actor?s Hand and Footprints to be Enshrined in Concrete at Famed Grauman?s Chinese Theater

Celebration to Include Extensive Conversation with Robert Osborne, Plus Special Screening of O?Toole?s Oscar?-Nominated Performance in Becket (1964)

Legendary actor Peter O?Toole will be a special guest at the 2011 TCM Classic Film Festival as attendees from around the globe join TCM in honoring the Irish-born actor?s extraordinary career. Several special events are planned for the celebration, including an in-depth conversation between O?Toole and TCM host Robert Osborne and a special screening of O?Toole?s Oscar?-nominated performance in Becket (1964).

The TCM Classic Film Festival will take place April 28 - May 1 in Hollywood. As part of the festival activities, O?Toole will place his hand and footprints in cement in front of the world-famous Grauman?s Chinese Theatre on Saturday, April 30. ?Caught at last. Forensics will have my dabs forever,? O?Toole said about the honor.

On Friday, April 29, Osborne will sit down with O?Toole for an extensive conversation about his life and career for a special live taping that will air later on TCM. The conversation will be recorded in front of a live audience of festival attendees at The Music Box, the newest venue to be added to the TCM Classic Film Festival.

Also on Friday, the celebration will include a screening of Becket (1964), which earned O?Toole the second of eight Best Actor Oscar? nominations. O?Toole will introduce the film, in which he plays England?s King Henry II, whose friendship with Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Becket turned into a power struggle that ended with Becket?s murder. Richard Burton, who plays the title role, joined his co-star and good friend on the list of 1964?s Best Actor Oscar nominees. O?Toole took on the visage of Henry II again four years later in The Lion in Winter (1968), which marked his third Oscar nomination.

  11. TCM will likely not want to replicate the same line-up as the one for last year's Summer Under The Stars retrospective. It will all depend on what is made available.

FInding a place on the schedule may be the hardest part of planning the remembrance. If it can be organized quickly, I would expect "Bob's Picks" next Wednesday to be replaced. Or maybe even this Sunday's line-up. Otherwise, it may not be scheduled until the 8th of April.

Yea! And don't worry, April 2nd will be here sooner than you think.

*"Who else from these boards will be at the Manchurian screening in NYC? It might be nice to put some faces with message-board names at the screening."*

Hopefully a few others will chime in and announce their planned attendance at the screening. But you might want to checkout the Rambles thread too. I know a few of those ladies live in New York and are likely to be going. At least, they should be going.

Did anyone go to the Tampa Screening of *Smokey And The Bandit* hosted by Ben Mankiewicz and Burt Reynolds? Would REALLY love to hear about that event. Also curious how Reynolds is doing after his surgery. I hope he isn't frail as I couldn't get my head to accept that image.

And I am still anticipating a Cleveland report!

  13. *"I've loved Peter since I was a young girl, first seing him in his iconic role as LOA, so beautifully handsome in those white cotton Damascus robes, keffiyeh and agal. Can you imagine the effect he and the classic film had on a girl of Syrian descent? And through the yrs. and all of his great performances afterward, I never waivered. I don't think he'll ever know the effect he's had on my life; so many wonderful memories, including my parents & family. I know; I'm rambling."* - kathan12

What a wonderful remembrance you posted today. Thank you for sharing it.

Sorry you won't be in Hollywood this Spring but take comfort that Robert's conversation with Peter O'Toole will be seen on TCM in the coming months.
