  2. *" A state legislator wants to dump a 19th-century law banning the sale of yellow margarine, though it's been years since any violator was ordered to spread 'em."* - scsu1975 Ha! Listening to old radio programs sponsored by Kraft Foods, the promos for Parkay Margarine make mention of Parkay being available in white sticks or yellow sticks - in those states whose laws allow the sale of colored margarine. I guess the dairy farmers didn't want anything on the store shelves that looked like real butter or could be confused with being real butter. I also think margarine was the only spread easily available during the war. Butter mostly went to the troops while margarine was available in the U.S. It also "cost" fewer ration points to get the "100% Natural Spread" in place of real butter. But I didn't know margarine had been around so long. 1895? Wow! Kyle In Hollywood
  3. *"To be fair, I honestly don't know what their schedules look like, but two hours once a week, or to be more fair, once a month, dosen't really seem like that big a deal."* - infinite1 You'd be right if RO or BM worked in Atlanta and were there every week. The reality is they fly in once a month to record their stand-ups and other materials over a few days and then are off to places north, west or beyond to do other things - TCM related or not. Recording a two-hour commentary would likely take up a another half day and probably necessitate an additional full day of their time in Atlanta. I don't have a clue what RO and BM have in their contracts about work hours/days. But it might create a conflict with the number of days that each is contracted to provide services to TCM. (But I am only guessing.) I think an SAP track would be a great option. But I am wondering if that is complicated with legal issues surrounding the altering of an existing film or its soundtrack. Not sure. But I also think it might be easier logistically to upload a audio file to this website which can be used by the viewer "at will" rather than creating a "new" copy of the film for broadcast with a new SAP track. I like the commentary idea alot and was only thinking of options or alternatives that might facilitate making it happen if it can't be on the SAP channel. Kyle In Hollywood
  4. *"Excuses. Do posters get paid to defend TCM so much?"* - MMF No. We do it for free. And TCM considers it invaluable. The mods, on the other hand, make minimum wage. Kyle In Hollywood

  6. Not easy to cast. If the film is covering his life from the age of say, 20, to his death in his 80s (?), there aren't a great number of men that could easily cover that age range and make it believeable - especially with a pork pie hat on their heads. There really aren't any "Robert Donat"s anymore. If one has an interest in Frank Lloyd Wright, definitely seek out the Ken Burns documentary on the man. It is excellent. Kyle In Hollywood
  7. *"Even after almost 50 years, this image still defines urban sophistication for me. But that cigarette holder must reach into the next room. A little artistic license, I think."* - DougieB Definitely exaggerated - but very effective. (Did you notice that the same artist worked on the "Tiffany's" and the "Bicycle Thief" posters?) I investigated just what the actual measurements for the original *Breakfast At Tiffany's* poster might be. Comparing it to other Italian posters with similar-looking dimensions, it is likely 55" x 117" - but could be as large as 110" x 240". This size was very popular for Paramount releases in the '50s and early '60s. *"And I want to join the chorus of congratulations on another year of superior hunting and gathering on our behalf. These images truly do brighten many a day."* Thanks for saying so. It's good to know that members visiting this thread leave with a positive reaction. Kyle In Hollywood
  8. *"This was such a wonderful look at early Hollywood. Thanks Kyle for taking all of the time to put together all of those wonderful images."* - Scottman I had to do something with all this "stuff" I had on my hard drive. And "Moguls And Movie Stars" offered the perfect opportunity to share it with everyone. I didn't expect it to become so far out of sync with the series (tho I never planned to post materials post-1950) but there was just too many things I wanted to post. I am pleased I finally got the chance to post the Exhibitor Books, the Disney Posters and some of the various Personality Posters. (Yes, I still have more of those.) But there are many magazine spreads that got passed over, a series of portraits by George Hurrell "unseen" and even a Christmas Card to Marlon Brando from Clara Bow. Maybe someday. In the meantime, I forgot to add these items found below. They were part of the original inspiration for this thread and if I don't add them now, I doubt I will ever get to post them. Thanks for your good words. I am happy you enjoyed it all. "Moguls And Movie Stars" Miscellany _Hollywood Studios Enlist in the War Effort_ Frank Capra Short Subject Poster "In 1944, The U.S. government produced what was arguably the most influential propaganda film to come out of the war,"The Negro Soldier." Joe Louis, the World's Heavyweight Champion, was the centerpiece of the film. Made to counteract the charges of racism and discrimination in the military service, it was designed to be shown to all servicemen, black and white alike, to educate them about the contributions of blacks throughout U.S. history. The film was produced by famed director Frank Capra, and was written by Carlton Moss, who would later become an important figure in African-American independent cinema."

  15. Honestly, I don't know if RO, BM or AB would have enough spare time to record two hours of special commentary while watching a movie. But there are some other very quallified and more-than-competent TCM folks that I'd like to hear. If one has ever watched the monthly TCM video podcast with TCM staffers discussing the channel's monthly offerings, you soon learn just how knowledgeable the entire TCM staff is about classic films. So, I "nominate" the TCM podcast regulars to take up the project of providing original commentary to some of the TCM "war horses" that are shown. I think offering this new feature to some of the most popular TCM titles would bring something fresh to films like *Casablanca*, *The Best Years Of Our Lives*, *Dr. Strangelove* or other titles which could all use a new "bell or whistle" to make them interesting to long-time viewers. And if their remarks can't be attached to the SAP channel, they could easily be uploaded as an audio track to the website that one could stream online while the film is playing or a file which could be downloaded to an MP3 player and listened to from that device while the film is playing. 17. h3. "Moguls And Movie Stars" Miscellany _Hollywood Studios Enlist in the War Effort_ Various Studios' Exploitation Propaganda Films "Two films came out of Gregor Zimmer's book "Education for Death", the Walt Disney cartoon short and this feature. Bonita Granville stars as an American-educated German girl who refuses to go along with the Nazis' plan to produce a master race. This poster features a whip-wielding S.S. officer and a frightened Granville for what would become the second-highest grossing film of RKO's 1943-44 season." "The career of a Nazi officer shown as flashbacks from his "trial" as a war criminal." "This movie shows us the rise of Adolf Hitler from a small radical political adventurer to the dictator of Germany in the way of a gangster film. Except for some minor inaccuracies, the historical facts are given in a correct way." "The story of this Monogram movie is loosely based on the life and times of Nazi criminal and German propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels." (Click Through on Above Images for Larger Versions. 18. *"Quick question about the Hollywood Celebrity Hotel: Is it safe for a woman to walk back to that hotel from the Roosevelt or Grauman's Chinese Theatre at, say, midnight or 1 a.m. after a screening?"* - 'Wolfie' I would say yes, though I always "err" on the side of caution with a single woman walking _anywhere_ after dark - whether it be Hollywood or Helena. I had to check the location of the Celebrity Hotel. I haven't been by there for awhile but the street where it is located (Franklin) is "well-travelled" at night. If I was a single woman, I might plan my route back to the hotel by passing through either the Hollywood & Hollywood mall complex or through the Hollywood Renaissance Hotel. I am sure there are entrances/exits on the Franklin Avenue side of both of those buildings. Because the Celebrity Hotel also appears to be across the street from the Hollywood & Highland Parking garage, any local the two of you might meet while here and who parked in that facility (discounted parking of the TCMFF!) may be willing to escort your friend to the hotel on their way back to their car. If your friend is leaving a screening at The Egyptian a few blocks farther down the street, I would definitely suggest taking a cab back to the hotel. Cab drivers in Hollywood are encouraged to accept short fares in the neighborhood and are not outrageously expensive. Hope this helps. Kyle In Hollywood Edited by: hlywdkjk on Dec 26, 2010 8:08 AM
  19. h3. "Moguls And Movie Stars" Miscellany _Hollywood Studios Enlist in the War Effort_ Propaganda FIlms from Walt Disney Studios Short Subject (1943) "The Walt Disney Studios produced this propaganda cartoon short and released it in 1943. Beginning as a discourse on how we humans think and reason and how emotions play a part in that process, the plotline quickly changed into an condemnation of the Nazi police state and how its evil machinations had corrupted the judgment of its citizens." Feature Film (1943) Halfsheet "This is a unique film in Disney Production's history. This film is essentially a propaganda film selling Major Alexander de Seversky's theories about the practical uses of long range strategic bombing. Using a combination of animation humorously telling about the development of air warfare, the film switches to the Major illustrating how his ideas could win the war for the allies." Short Subject (1943) "Long unavailable for viewing, this anti-Nazi cartoon short made by Walt Disney during World War II is truly disturbing. An incredible portrayal of how propaganda and brainwashing can distort and corrupt a child's mind, this is probably the rarest of the short subject Disney posters printed in the 1940s. After being banned for over 60 years, the cartoon was finally released on DVD in 2004." (Click Through on Above Images for Larger Versions. Select "Actions" and "View All Sizes")
