  1. *"Besides, according to ROBERT OSBORNE, TCM owns an extensive film library."* - infinite1

If you are referring to the blogger interview he gave and that you re-posted, he never used the term "owned". It is you that have conferred that idea on his statements. What Robert Osborne says to a fan-blogger should not be construed to be anything but the most superficial description of the films that TCM has access to. I already told you that the "TCM library" consists of any and all films they have leased and which they have access to in any given month. They do not own anything other than 6 RKO titles.

Is there a reason you refuse accept that - or are you just looking to be argumentative with yet another member here?

  2. The Longer Road To Hollywood - 2011

(Because these events are taking place across the country, I am placing this in General Discussions rather than in the Film Festival Forums. Many not attending the event in Hollywood might miss this opportunity if I placed it down there.)

TCM Announced the 2011 Edition of "The Road To Hollywood", the channel's roadshow of free screenings across the country leading up to the 2011 Classic Film Festival in Hollywood, April 28th - May 1st. And, for all those that felt left out last year, this year the show is stopping in a slew of new cities in many different regions.

The "Road" show starts in Seattle on March 3rd with a screening of *North By Northwest* hosted by Robert Osborne and Eva Marie Saint. (Sorry, already "sold out.")

The rest of the itinerary and screenings are -

    http://www.tcm.com/2011/roadtohollywood/index.html

Please, if anyone knows how to get in touch member 'sandykaypax', please let that Ohioan know Robert O. is coming to Cleveland. But don't wait as the Cleveland tickets are becoming available tomorrow and they don't last long! "Mrs. Bennet" wouldn't forgive me for letting this slip by her.

And do we know anyone in or near Austin, Texas?

*"Mars invades the Earth in a search for female companionship!"*

*"A giant octopus attacks San Francisco!"*

How can anyone read those descriptions and not be excitedly amused? Fifties "Creature Features" direct from the Drive-Ins of our youth (or those of our parents.) What a fun time this is going to be.

But the "out-of-the-ordinary" this June doesn't stop there.

TCM has chosen some interesting actors to spotlight on June nights. They range from the silly (Ernie Kovacs) to the sublime (Jane Greer). Other interesting evenings are devoted to Johnny Sheffield ("Bomba"), Audie Murphy and Freddie Bartholomew ("Lloyds Of London").

TCM throws a One-Night-Only Jazz Festival including a Clint Eastwood concert at Carnegie Hall, A Thelonius Monk documentary and the Eastwood directed *Bird* about the legendary Charlie Parker. "Cool, man."

Wednesday, the 15th _must_ be "Guest Programmer" night. With the line-up consisting of -

    *Night Of The Hunter*

    *God's Little Acre*

*A Face In The Crowd* and

    *Touch Of Evil*

what else could it be but the picks of a serious cinephile? (or are they just a poseur?)

Not forgetting what month it is, the schedule includes a night for June Brides. But there is no room for sentiment as the evening is immediately followed on the next night with a line-up of divorces and other marriages gone bad. I guess all the sentimentality was reserved for Father's Day with its appropriate and traditional selection of paterfamilias films.

  4. *"And one thing I do respect is that the Oscars were aiming for the 20s crowd because those are the people going to the movies the most. Why should they have to cater to old codgers like ourselves who seldom go?"* - filmlover

And the young'uns watch the MTV Movie Awards. That's "their" movie awards show. They don't care one whit about the Motion Picture Academy. I predicted a "trainwreck" (to 'lzcutter') before the show started - and wasn't disappointed.

Now, if they had somehow included Robert Osborne in Alec Baldwin's "Inception"/"dream" sequence at the very beginning (perhaps RO "tied up" so Alec became the host of TCM), I would have laughed about THAT all evening and forgiven (almost) everything else that went on afterwards. THAT would have been inspired. As the official greeter of the Academy on the Red Carpet, it's not like anyone in that room doesn't know who RO is and what he does every night.

When the entire audience gives a standing ovation to former host Billy Crystal (An accolade usually reserved for a film "legend"), you know you've lost the crowd.

  5. Looks like the NYTimes agrees with you, 'lzcutter' -

"Ms. Hathaway was better alone than at Mr. Franco?s side. A little like the attempt to graft Generation Y technology to old-fangled Hollywood panache, their stage personas clashed: Mr. Cooler-Than-Thou and Miss Eager-to-Please never really synched. It was a strategic attempt at demographic synergy, but it was like pairing James Dean with Debbie Reynolds."

    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/28/movies/awardsseason/28watch.html?ref=todayspaper

I gave up after Franco offered his "dirty movie titles" bit. I can't believe anyone thought that was appropriate - let alone funny.

  6. *"...unless they are both living on two different planets working for two different entity's called TCM, someone is FOS."*

If you define "library" as films that TCM owns, it is miniscule. If you define "library" as films that TCM has access to in any given month, it is quite large. That large "library" would include titles from the original "Turner Library" and films from other sources - such as the Hitchcock titles controlled by Universal. When TCM has licensed those films, they would be considered as part of TCM's "library". But there is no longer a "permanent" TCM library.

    What's so difficult about that?

  7. *"I just read in some trivia book that a very young Andy Williams dubbed Lauren Bacall's singing voice in films. Does anyone know if this is true?"* - TikiSoo

It looks like it is true - to a certain point. And depending on who you listen to.

    ------

    Lauren Bacall -

(Reprint of interview in Premiere Magazine, 1996)

    http://www.livefastdieyoungbook.com/premierebacall.htm

*Is it true your singing voice was dubbed in To Have and Have Not by Andy Williams?*

Supposedly he dubbed one note. But he didn't dub a whole song, because I know how many times I recorded those songs. You can just listen to it and know it's me. It's possible he dubbed one note, but I don't know which one. A higher one probably.

    -------

    Andy Williams -

    (Interview in U.K. Newspaper, 2001)

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/profiles/all-hail-the-emperor-of-easy-702674.html

In Williams's mid-teens, the boys found work in Hollywood. Williams's first recording was backing Bing Crosby for "Swinging On A Star". Then, I prompt, you dubbed Lauren Bacall's singing voice in To Have And Have Not.

Williams grimaces slightly. "I did, but I wish that had never been written, because she came out later with a book that said... Well, they eventually took me off the track because it didn't sound enough like her."

It would've seemed strange, hearing your voice coming out of a woman's mouth. "But it really happened. I was at Warner Brothers being in a movie with my brothers - we were always two soldiers or something - and I went in to get permission from the head of the music department to go play baseball, because I'd done my schoolwork. His back was to me, and I called, 'Mr Chambers, I'd like to...' and he turned and said, 'That's the voice I've been looking for!'. I was 14, my voice was rather high for a man, but slightly low for a woman. So they took me over to a sound stage - huge screen, Lauren Bacall's face on it, she was beautiful. First movie she ever made. I looked up, and her lips were moving. They said, 'We'll start again, and you sing along'.

"I think they used it in previews. But there was one line they dubbed in that she actually said: 'Who can tell?'"

He sings the bar now, softly: "'Maybe it happened this way/ Maybe we really belong together but, after all/ How little we know... Who can tell?' She said the line she spoke didn't match. Bacall apparently didn't sing well enough to get her through the whole song, but they clipped single lines together and I assume that's what you hear now. Still, it makes me look as though I'm saying something that isn't true."

Glad you approve. Over the past three years, I've posted the original One-Sheet. the Original 3-Sheet and a very rare Original 6-Sheet poster for the film. All of which are breathtakingly beautiful. (I think I've even posted some foreign posters too.) But, plain as it is, the simplicity and "joy" in today's image made me smile so I was happy to add it to the Gallery.

Ack! You left for London and have returned! And I didn't have the chance to post a send-off for you. I can't believe I let that slip by. (And that you didn't remind me!) I hope you had a wonderful time, M'Lady and were treated like the Bond Girl that I know you are. Or Lady Marian, if you prefer.

  10. *"Just in case, program your DVR to run long enough to record the entire, uncut film. More than once an edited version has been listed, but a full length version shown."* - VX

Not a bad strategy. Definitely worth the effort.

I think TCM was anticipating having the 145m version to show. The time slot for the film does last two and a half hours. But with the shorter version,TCM has resorted to showing two long "short subjects" to fill nearly 45 min after *Joan Of Arc*.

4:14 PM (PST) *Short Film: Service With The Colors* (1940) C-21 mins,

4:39 PM (PST) *Short Film: Sons Of Liberty* (1939) A patriotic short chronicling the efforts of underground leader and military financier Haym Salomon during the American Revolution. Starring Claude Rains as Haym Salomon. Directed by Michael Curtiz. Cast: Claude Rains Dir: Michael Curtiz C-21 mins,

*Joan Of Arc* is also scheduled to be shown on March 12th - and is again set to fill a 150m timeslot. Maybe TCM can get the long version for showing by then.

Yeah, even Laszlo Kovaks and John Barry can phone it in. (I think Barry's score for "The Black Hole" is the the worst thing I've ever heard. Don't know what he was thinking.)

I guess no one was doing their best work on the film - save for Mr. Spilsbury. And in his case, it is only by default that it is his "best" work because he never made another film in Hollywood

  12. *"As explained here awhile back by TCMProgrammr..."* - lzcutter

"How many Films are in the TCM Library?"

    http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/click.jspa?searchID=339160&messageID=7781431

"It's a very complicated answer. Ted Turner bought the RKO, MGM pre-1986 and Warner Brothers pre-1948 libraries in the late '80s, which total about 3,500 films. When TCM launched in 1994, that was considered the "Turner library" and that was the basis for the newtork. However, in the late '90s, Turner merged with Warner Brothers, and since then they (Warner) have been the official owners of that collection of libraries. However, TCM does have an agreement with them (Warner) to play films from that library, although it isn't unlimited access in the way that it used to be. In addition, we license films from all of the other studios and independent distrubutors. As it is, about 65% - 70% comes from those 3,500 titles, and the rest come from other sources."

    *tcmprogrammr* February 26, 2006

If TCM has a "library", it is an ever-evolving one in which some films are added while others are removed for extended periods of time. This is what Robert Osborne was likely referencing. But none of the titles are the exclusive property of TCM - save for the "Lost And Found RKO" titles.

Oops! That's an embarrasing typo - as I had even looked up his bio and such before posting. But "Pilsbury" just comes naturally for a Midwestern boy raised on "Gold Medal Flour".

*"Although, I will admit he acted about as well as a doughboy."*

Wow. Can't believe you saw it. There's an allegation that all his dialogue had to be dubbed over? Do you know if that is true?

  14. *"So, why do the pay channels have "mirrored" Satellite feeds if they are not commercial channels? They are not selling ads on THEIR programming."* - infinite1

I don't know what the thoughts of premium channels is on such things. But I do know that premium channels are getting many dollars from their subscribers each month while TCM is getting dimes. That may have something to do with it.
