Are there any fans of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy here?
I am a big fan of classic movies, but my ultimate top movie of all the time would be the LOTR trilogy. I suppose I consider it a modern classic. No other movie has made such a profound effect on me. Anyone out there who shares my passion for these movies?

Whatever happened of Janice Wilson? I just watched Now, Voyager and was amazed at a wonderful performance by Janis Wilson. Is this lady still alive?
Does anyone know more about this talented actress?

A lot of people tell me I look like Vivien Leigh.

....I would take as many Adrian gowns as I could get my hands on.

Good heavens - were they really going to destroy it? I thought buildings such as the Plaza were protected. In England you cannot even change a door knob without permission, if the building is listed.
I keep reading about more and more Hollywood movie stars homes being wiped out too, such as the Pickfair. This is really sad state of affairs. Is there absolutely no regard for historic or sentimental value in the States?

I've never seen "Dr Zhivago" and "The Sound of Music". Should I be embarrassed?

Tell that to people who though remaking "The Ladykillers" was a good idea.

Another life and career cut short was Sharon Tate. What a tragic story. I thought her acting career would have gone far..

Rudolph Valentino. I always wondered if he would have made a smooth transition to talkies.

Hi Larry, I didn't like GWTW that much, I thought it was too long, but I suppose if you like the movie, you don't ever want it to end!
It is very difficult to pick THE ONE all time favourite movie, as a lot of movies touch my heart for different reasons. I do however rate "The Third Man" very highly indeed. What other movies apart from GWTW are you crazy about Larry?

Larry, one of my all time favorites is "All About Eve". The dialogue in this movie is so sharp, it hurts. Why, oh why don't they make movies like that any more?
On a lighter note, another one of my favorites is "Bambi". That movie is literally a work of art and stands miles apart of any Disney animation done before or since. It is truly beautiful!

LOL, that's quite funny brackenhe!

Bette Davis and Robert Michum.

The Big Sleep is my current favourite (along with my other favourites, LOL!).

I bought "Apocalypse Now" DVD last month. Stunningly visual movie. I hadn't realised before that Lawrence Fishbourne was in it!

The Garfield documentary is included on "The Postman Always Rings Twice" DVD as one of the extra features. Definitely worth watching.

If you ever find yourself in London, UK, pay a visit to NFT (National Film Theatre). It has an enormous screen and plays all the classic films you can think of. Next month I will be going to see "Farewell My Lovely", "The Maltese Falcon" and "The Twentieth Century"(Carole Lombard and John Barrymore).
I am a big Robert Mitchum fan and am delighted that July will be a Robert Mitchum month at NFT.
For any Charlie Chaplin enthusiast out there, I urge you to visit BFI in London from 21 - 24 July, as they will be running The Charles Chaplin conference, bringing together archivists, researchers and scholars to reassess Chaplin's impact on film, the arts and modern culture.

Regarding Pola Negri, Gloria Swanson writes about the Hollywood arrival of Pola Negri in 1922 and the way the studio handled the publicity.
As Pola Negri had roughly the same image as Swanson, in order to publicize her, they invented the feud between these two ladies. It was completely phony of course. Gloria invited her to a dinner party shortly after her arrival and they agreed it was all nonsense.
Negri did however use this "feud" to milk the studio and demand whatever she wanted.

Hmmm....yes, I know what you mean. I've been going to cinema once or twice a year for the last few years. I am 29 years old and feel there is absolutely nothing out there to grab my attention. Sad really, because nothing matches watching a movie on the big screen. Occasionally I go to the BFI (British Film Institute) to watch one of the classic movies in their full glory, but it is more expensive than the ordinary cinema (?12 a ticket=25 dollars), so it is a rare treat. Worth it, though!

It is much easier to make crap movie, just churn out that same formula.
The problem is that studios today don't nurture talent any more, not the way the old studio system did. Movie making was always a business, first and foremost, but in the olden days studios cared about the quality of the product they were putting out on the market. Sometimes when I watch one of DVDs out of my vast collection, I become aware of the fact that almost everyone involved with the making of that film is long gone. Yet, the studio is still making money out of that movie, because I, amongst millions of other people have bought the DVD.
I wonder if anyone 100 years from now will hunt for that rare copy of "Mr & Mrs Smith" or "Dude where's my car?".
It is sad to see this incredible art form reduced to these levels.

I would love to see "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn". Has it ever played on TCM?

"King Kong" is currently being filmed by Peter Jackson and will be released in December. I am greatly anticipating this movie. If it is anything like "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, then we are in for a colossal treat!
In his production video diaries, Jackson talks about the original movie with great passion. Apparently, that was the first movie that he saw as a little boy and it inspired him to become a movie-maker. He was lucky enough to meet Fay Wray and speaks of her with great love and attachment. He even owns the props from the original movie.
I cannot wait to see the remake, Peter Jackson's enthusiasm is contagious!

No, I never read the books and was in fact dragged to the cinema by my husband to see the first movie. I had the full intention to sleep my way through the entire film, but was instead totally blown away by what I saw. Incredible. The amount of detail and craftsmanship gone into these movies is unbelievable. The script, cinematography, special effects, acting, costumes and music are all first class and come together beautifully.
