I posted something about the movie "Eroica" in the other music thread but since it is Beethoven I figured it could live here for you too. Von Karajan. The first two movements (almost) of the Third Symphony. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFltqVS8d9I

Lafitte, my friend, where are you? At your suggestion I watched "Eroica." What a great idea for a movie. Take one of the greatest works in the history of music and imagine what the initial rehearsal would have been. Little did anyone know what they were getting that day. It was unlike anything anyone had heard before, even from Beethoven himself. After a false start or two the orchestra runs headlong into the work. The treat apart from the music is the way the others in the room react to the piece. The Princess is enthralled by it. The Prince seems confused. The Count can't stand it. It goes against everything he knows. And he likes to show that he knows plenty. But the Count (Timothy Piggott-Smith) has one beautiful scene where in the middle of the second movement he is grudgingly moved to tears. However, he can't quite bring himself to really like the piece. Near the end of the that same movement Haydn comes in. When it is over the musicians react as if God himself had arrived. Later, when asked, Haydn points that now the artist is the hero. Never been done before. "From today nothing will be the same." Indeed not. Equally amazing from Beethoven is the other work he produced in the same time span. Monumental works both for orchestra and chamber groups all as his deafness began to creep into his life. If you are inclined to sit this long Von Karajan leads the first two movements, almost. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFltqVS8d9I Edited by: movieman1957 on Mar 3, 2010 11:03 PM

MAY SCHEDULE IS NOW UP!!!!!!!!!!

I hope people can now get some sleep. -
We've talked about this and I agree with nearly all of your point. I thought the beginning, nice as it was, could have been completely eliminated. If he hadn't shot it all it would have saved him lots of money. The plot is as you say. It has been done before and since and often. Even Hallmark produced a movie as I recall. I've said it before, as have others, the whole film is brown. Even when the sky is blue it is not that blue. People wear brown clothes and live in a brown world. I am sure there is a reason but I couldn't figure it out. The shoot out at the end is pretty exciting but the trip is just too long to get there. Now that I have seen the whole thing it would be interesting to see the edited version. It is probably worth seeing from a film history standpoint but not much else.

Reactions to May 2010 schedule?

>Someone wrote in the comments that they were afraid maybe the TCM Film Festival was TCM's farewell bash and that the channel was going to go away at the end of April. I wondered how long it would take for that to come up. -
She was pretty loose. (That is a good word for her performance.) Maybe if Dekker had been in it more it I would see it more like you. They did some nice verbal fencing when they were together. It will get another look someday. It has been a really long time since I have seen "Pittsburgh" so there is nothing to add for that pairing. Their pairing, other than Gilbert, was one part I did like once it got going. Anyway, thanks for taking the time. I always respect your opinion.

I think you pretty well covered it.

MissG: Help me out here. I watched "Seven Sinners" the other night and was not thrilled. I am inclined to think that I was in a bad mood because it wasn't funny (save for Billy Gilbert) and there wasn't much drama. One thing they knew how to do was tear up a saloon with a really good fight, twice. One thing I'll say is that Wayne and Dietrich had some wonderful chemistry. (If rumors are true than that is understandable) but it bothers me when men follow around anyone like they were lost and stupid from love. Though Duke grew out of that. And I may be in the minority here but I am not at all fond of Dietrich's singing. Gilbert's close to being over the top but he is good. I love him from L&H work. Tell me what I missed. Maybe I'm still in a funk. (Awaiting a slap upside my head. A "DiNozzo" for those who know.)

I don't know whether anyone likes "Smooth Jazz" or not but here is a sampling from Earl Klugh and Bob James. "Where I Wander." Perfect background for reading the boards.

The Three Stooges also used it. In their film they delivered ice. Well, they tried. -
I am beginning to believe that all "Westerns Rambles" lead to "The Searchers." Isn't this about the third time we've been here? And we still find things to talk about in this film.

95. "One false move and I'll shoot you right between the headlights."

Well put Miss G. Again the land is, if not a character, atl east a force to be reckoned with. It is hard on everyone.

Thinking back on the landscape, who would choose to settle there? It doesn't seem to be any good for farming or ranching.

Feeling warmer.

I think poor old Aaron is set up not to be liked, or at least appreciated. We look at Ethan much like the kids do. He is exciting, interesting. He has been places. There is a mystery to him. Aaron is none of those things. That doesn't mean Aaron is anything bad. He is just a man trying to scratch out a living and a boring one at that. He doesn't stand a chance against Ethan. He is not a coward as much as he is not cut from the same cloth.

Well, that will teach me to be more careful. But, if I made you laugh then god for me.

I have Fonda's biography that he was much involved in, almost like an interview with a narrative. He quite agrees he was not a great father. I do like the short feature that Jane and Peter do about him. It seems they are past some of that history.

No. I want to read yours too.

She is so much like Gene Tierney but there is a more enigmatic look to her. Then she smiles and she is a different lady. "Tall In The Saddle" was my fist exposure as well. Feisty thing is she.

Thanks for the lovely selections. Chopin also was not much for orchestral music but he managed to write two piano concertos. Here is a selection from the Concerto No. 1.

His movie characters or him?
