  1. Kathy: I've read where some critics didn't like "Ammonia Avenue" because they got away, more or less, from their concept albums. This was pretty much Top 40 music (which doesn't make it bad for me) according to them but so what. Some of my favorite albums are "Eye In The Sky", "Stereotomy" and "Try Anything Once." BTW, in case you (or anyone doesn't remember) Parsons was an engineer for The Beatles at one point.
  2. In light of the way I know TCM to do this, the interview is repeated at 11 ET but a different movie is shown after the second showing of the interview.

  4. "Old and Wise" is a fine Parsons song. "Since The Last Goodbye" and "Pipeline" are favorites from "Ammonia Avenue." I think they have very unusual chord structures and interesting instrumentation. I really like their instrumentals. It is unusual for a rock group.
  5. *So your songs are all sad songs, Chris?* Not all but many from when I was younger. Some I wrote for my bride. Most of the those in the last ten years or so have been for church.
  6. Thanks for posting this article. This is one of my favorite films and probably Ford's least known western. Too bad. Ward Bond is great in this film. Always on the verge of losing his temper. It seems everyone takes turns calming him down. The article mentions his torn pants and I recall Jane Darwell was playing up seeing his leg. Good fun. Good performances. Good way to spend 90 minutes.
  7. Hi Lynn: I thought I typed that in but must have backed out on it. The idea would be that they were alive by today's date. This way if by some unfortunate chance someone were to die through the contest the schedule would not have to be changed. Sugarpuss; Just envision me for the next thirty days as John Cleese sitting at the moving desk playing the part of news reader.
  8. If you want to do classical - Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony - final movement. Brahms' Paino Concerto No. 1 Barber's - Adagio for Strings Copland - "Our Town." Elgar's Cello Concerto. Before I met my bride I was quite lonely (probably pathetic in hindsight) so I have some that fit. A couple I actually like. I'll dig one out and see if it is worth going on for you.
  9. Here's a handful - "Worst That Could Happen" - Jimmy Webb from "Five Easy Pieces." "Beautiful Sadness" - Jane Olivor from "Chasing Rainbows." "The Dreamer" - Andy Williams from "Solitaire." "Looking For The Right One" - Art Garfunkel from "Breakaway." (I've had the right one for 25 years) "Windows and Walls" - Fogelberg from "Windows and Walls." "Take It To Heart" - Michael McDonald. and most everything I've ever written.
  10. I made a mistake. The song is "Same Old Lang Syne" so that is on the album you saw. Sorry. Do you want Fogelberg bleak or anyone? Message was edited by: movieman1957
  11. That is "Another Old Lang Syne" that I mentioned. Here is a link to one of the Greatest Hits albums. http://www.amazon.com/Very-Best-Dan-Fogelberg/dp/B00005LNBZ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1231782361&sr=1-1
  12. Kathy being the woman of fine taste that she is managed to pick some from several albums. "The Reach" and "Run For The Roses" (along with his other hit "Another Old Lang Syne" that is heard around Christmas) are found on the album "The Innocent Age." "Old Tennessee" is on "Captured Angel." "High Country Snow" is from the album of the same name and "To The Morning" (which is indeed a lovely song) is from "Home Free." The afore mentioned "Souvenirs" is from the album of the same name. He has two jazz flavored abums with Tim Weisburg that are titled "Twin Sons of Different Mothers" and "No Resemblance Whatsoever." Another fine lyric is "Dancing Shoes" from a wonderful album called "Nether Lands." He was well suited to write in many genres. "High Country Snows" and his first two albums were flavored with country style songs.
  13. I wish I were as good as you. I used to listen a lot. Then I got married and had children and that killed time listening to Beethoven. Once when my daughter was about four she asked whatkind of music I was listening to and I told her it was "sitting down" music. You had to sit, listen and pay attention to it. Both of my children played in the school orchestra so there was a time we could enjoy some music together.
  14. Hi April: Fogelberg's song title is just "Longer." If you have the album "Phoenix" which "Longer" was on originally read the lyrics from "Beggar's Game." It is very poetic and has a sorrowful feel to it. My favorite part lyrically - "The candles glistened and the water gleamed. "She drew a bath and the windows steamed. "She looked like every woman ever dreamed "In the heart of a lonely man. In the heart of a lonely man." Great lyricist and musician. Played most of the instruments on his albums.
  15. Kathy: So nice to see another lover of classical music. Not many of us so finding out one more common joy is nice. I tend to enjoy the Romantic period most followed by Baroque. Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak are among a list of favorites. You mentioned music in church. I'm in the band and we play more contemporary songs but one thing that has become quite popular are newer arrangements of old hymns. It keeps the beauty of the lyrics and melody while dressing up the arrangements. They are fun to play. I enjoy Fogelberg. He was a great songwriter. The Beatles, The Moody Blues, Christopher Cross, ELO rank high on list. I grew up in the 70s too so a long list of Top 40 songs are among those I enjoy and most often buy on itunes. I like "Smooth Jazz." The Rippingtons, Four Play, Ken Navarro, David Benoit are among those I listen to. I love music. It is a great calming influence for me. It also the best way I reflect my mood. (Most often played is Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony.) I don't have a broad range but I listen as often as I can.
  16. Welcome to the Programming Challenge No. 12. I am your host for this challenge by the unbelievable result that I won Challenge No. 11. This challenge will run one month from January 12 to February 11, 2009. All schedules must be posted by midnight February 11th PST. This is a fun event that was started by fellow member path40a as a way to challenge people to program a week's schedule as if they were the holder of this most important job. The only prize will be that the winner of this challenge will host the next one. This contest is in no way sponsored, endorsed or coordinated by the folks at TCM. One thing to note is that the TCM programmer has often looked in and on occasion mined the brilliance of some contestants for use in the actual broadcast schedules. You could possibly have the warm fuzzies knowing you helped program a theme that may one day show up on TCM. *Programming Requirements* 1. Selevt any week for the upcoming 12 months. Your week starts at 6am ET and end on Saturday at 5:59 ET. 2. Each day ususally begins at 6am ET but can start later if needed. 3. One night of at least four films must be devoted to a Star Of The Month. Be sure the person you select would have enough movies to schedule over a four week period. 4. This challenge's special event is an interview program of your creation. You are the host. It might be modeled on the "Private Screenings","Under The Infuence" or "Gene Wilder" specials. Pick a person you would like tp interview. Give a title to the show. I your remarks give a description of the show with format and features and why we should watch. Schedule movies by your guest or related to your guest. Start at 8pm ET and followed by a feature film. Rebroadcast your show at 11pm (west coast showing) followed by additional features. 5. All other evenings are themes of your choosing. Daytime themes are encouraged. Feel free to mark birthdays, anniversaries and historical events, etc. for any portion of the day. 6. Feature films start on the top, quarter, bottom, three-quarters of the hour. 7. Primetime features start at 8pm ET. Please allow enough time on your evening schedule to allow for intros and outtros for each film. 8. You are not required to but feel free to include short films, featurettes, trailers, etc. in your schedule. 9. Please program the regular TCM features in your schedule. "SIlent Sunday Nights" begin around midnight Sunday and is followed by "TCM Imports." "TCM Underground" starts about 2am ET on Friday. Those start times can be flexible. Saturday's "The Essentials" must start at 8pm. ET. Please include some notes on your schedule. We are interested to know why you picked a selection and your inspirations. *Premieres* This challenge will allow for 8 premieres. This is roughly a weekly average for TCM to show over a month. A premiere is classified as any movie not available through the core libraries and has not been shown on TCM. Movies for "Silent Sunday Nights", "Underground" and "Imports" are not counted against the 8. Public Domain films are not counted against the total premieres. The film libraries (with hyperlinks) for use in this Challenge are - Warner Bros: http://www.imdb.com/company/co0026840/ MGM (pre-1986): http://www.imdb.com/company/co0020206/ RKO (all): http://www.imdb.com/company/co0041421/ Columbia Pictures (all) http://www.imdb.com/company/co0071509/ United Artists (after 1950): http://www.imdb.com/company/co0026841/ Samuel Goldwyn (all): http://www.imdb.com/company/co0016710/ Walt Disney (Live Action only): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Disney_live_action_films Public Domain list - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Public_domain_films And, as always, you are free to program any film that has already been presented on TCM regardless of library affiliation and should be designated with a "p/s" symbol (designating "previously scheduled"). And you can find running times for your film selections by using IMDB.com or TCMDB.com to research your titles. Format your listing by showing the time it shows, name of the film, year it was produced, star or person of interest, studio, running time, premiere or previously scheduled. Please have fun. (Being the technologically challenged soul I am I apologize for how sloppy this is.) Message was edited by: movieman1957 To include notes regarding films in the Public Domain.
  17. The albums I buy are on average about $10. I then burn them on a CD and I can print the album art and make my own CD package. What I really like about it is buying single songs. When I was in high school and after I listened to a great deal of Top 40 radio and many of the songs never get played around here. I have been able to buy a lot of songs I had on 45s. (And if you are too young to know those we'll have another chat.) For 99 cents I could get them and burn a CD of favorites. Walmart has a similar thing where you can buy downloads for the same price that are not married to itunes. This way you can select an individual song without buying stuff you don't know or like. They also give you a thirty second sample to make sure you get the right song. Hope that helps.
  18. According to what I read they will now have three prices per song. $.69, $.99, and $1.29. I figure my tastes are well rooted in what will be the $.69 category. I think this all happens around the end of the quarter.
  19. Since itunes has reorganized their prices I figure I'm old enough I'll start saving some money when I buy something. I hardly fit the prime demographic.
  20. I love Jobyna and Lloyd together. She compliments Harold nicely. Interesting name too.
  21. If you are a Cooper fan than you need to go to the Favorites forum where there is a thread for him and a lot of ladies to talk with about Coop.
  22. Well, it was no insult. Let him see a couple before you tell him. BTW, welcome on. Any lady that this early posts in the westerns forum is ok by us.
  23. I like the effects on this year's promo. The part with (I guess) "A River Runs Through It" it looks like they flood the stage. The little props they put out front with the occasional TCM logo are a fun little reminder of who is responsible. Last year's was so popular I'm glad they enhanced it for this year.
