  1. >(So, do you like the Lemmon line-up or would you have done it differently?)

I have no problem with the film selections. I think only one I picked isn't there and that was "The April Fools" but I got to use a premiere.

The only thing I would have done differently, and this is on any SOTM, is I would have probably grouped the years of the films differently. I'm not sold on the idea of doing them more or less chronologically by week. It's ok but I like the idea of maybe seeing old Lemmon and newer Lemmon on the same night. I don't dislike the way it is set but it is not my preference.

  2. A lot of people will get their wish when they watch Ernest Borgnine on "Private Screenings." A chance to see "Seven Days To Noon" is welcome. It has been years. Jack Lemmon as SOTM.

(It was just a coincidence on my Challenge schedule.)

  3. It is paragraphs like that that make my head hurt sometimes. (Do you think he is over-analyzing?)

Aren't doctors generally defined by their profession? How often does a doctor tell anyone to call him "Mr." rather than "Dr." By definition you take it that they are good people based on their profession.

Is the thought process of "Valley" "the suicidal suppositions of old"? While change is inevitable it is not always good. Do we throw away the good foundations for the sake of a new way just because it is new? Not always.

Do the Joads look for new values or just a way to get along? If they had found their life in CA would they look for new values? I don't think so. Any search might have been more born of desperation.

I'm not sure Doniphon is complete in the context of the good man. He is good but he is not all good. He prides himself on his toughness as much as his willingness to help. He is, in my opinion, a troubled man. He is hurt. He lets that pain get the better of him.

Some of these I haven't seen in a while so I'm winging it. Would you elaborate more?

Take two aspirin now that I've given you a headache.

  4. April:

Way down the page you mentioned Jim Arness looking like a giant. One, he is. He is about 6' 5" tall. He is also more foreground than any of the others. He was very much in the mold of John Wayne. As you may know Wayne suggested Arness for Matt DIllon when he didn't want to do it.

  5. Hi April & Kathy:

Thanks to you both for your kind congratulations. It is most appreciated. I only have one request and that is both of you do a schedule for the next contest. It will happen after the first of the year. There are eleven you can look back to for guidance and certainly talk to me about it. It will be great. They are work but fun. If not I hope you will at least check in and vote.

    Thanks for the "fanfarre."

    FF:

Thanks for the cake. More than enough chocolate to keep me happy.

  6. How dumb was that? They owned the southern portion of Nevada and couldn't afford more thanthat set of clothes and a fancy suit. I had visions of Hop Sing doing laundry and all the guys sitting around in their underwear. Were they worried we wouldn't recognize them from week to week.

Matt Dillon and Festus had the same problem. Although Festus looked like he never had a wash day. I kept waiting for him to get a new hat.

    Unbelievable.

  7. One thing about "Dallas" that struck my odd was in the opening scene his outfit looked to me very much like his outfit in "The Westerner." It was probably more a sense of it on my part than anything actual about it but is stuck out to me.

Then he had to go and put on that silly hat. Ruth Roman sure seemed to like that introductory kiss.

  8. Having come home late from a golf outing and checking the board to see if I had any more duties as the most recent winner of the latest Programming Challenge I stumbled across "Heaven With A Gun" and the first thing I see is a naked woman. (This in a Glenn Ford movie?)

I like Ford in westerns and this is about the only one I haven't seen. I suspect it will be on again over the next week or so and I will try and catch it and we'll talk it over.

  9. Huh?

I'm not awake yet. I had to read it twice to make sure I read what I read. You guys broke my losing streak. I guess I'll have to live with it.

Thanks to all of you who submitted a schedule. It's work but it's fun. It was great to have so many schedules and I am flattered beyond words that I was selected. Thanks to filmlover for being a fabulous host. Those duties don't always seem easy and I hope I can live up to the level of past hosts who have done so well as to carry this through eleven installments.

I hope each of you will consider submitting a schedule next time. All of you did a wonderful job.

    I am just so surprised.

I don't even know where to start for the next one. I would be interested in knowing what all thought would be a good time to start the next one. With Thanksgiving coming and Christmas and other holidays I would like to have it at a time when the most can play. Please let me know what you think.

I am just so surprised. Thanks so much.

  10. We drove. We didn't go very far. Western Maryland, up to Gettysburg and back over to York, PA. It was a bit early for the foliage but it was lovely none the less.

(P.S. Dr. Pepper works for me too.)

  11. >Hope your trip was good. (The girl didnt' run out of gas again, did she??? )

No, she didn't. Good thing too as she didn't go with us. If she had run out someone would have been there to help her though. Thankfully, everything went well for my wife and me and the other couples. Not the most exciting weekend for me as it was a wine tasting excursion so I waited A LOT while everyone sipped on stuff. (I hate wine but I did get chocolate covered peanuts and a Pepsi.)

Didn't have a chance to watch one movie.

  12. Kathy:

Sorry to be so long responding. I've been out of town. I hope you enjoy those Selleck westerns. Nice films and Selleck looks so much the cowboy part. Be careful of Harmon. You won't recognize him playing that character.

Let me know after you've seen them.

    Chris

  13. Since you're talking publications I have an old "Movie and Radio Guide" someone gave me. It's for the week May 25-31, 1940. The picture of the week is "Typhoon." Pictures of scantily clad Robert Preston and Dorothy Lamour grace the layout. Thereis an article on Joan Fontaine. An article on "Torrid Zone." A "This week in Hollywood" and all the listings for the eastern part of the country.

No pictures of Cooper but there is one of Lawrence Welk.

  14. The ranch is the only thing that makes any sense but it plays such a small part that it wouldn't seem to be relevant. However, when you let a bunch of guys in NY make the decision (according to the answer on imdb) you never know what is coming.

    There's a thread. "Dumbest/Irrelevant Movie Titles."

  15. Everyone always does such a great job. Of those I hadn't commented on.....

*MattHelm* - I especially like "The Four Seasons", "Martin & Lewis Remakes" (didn't realize they had done so many) and "Kids Get In Free." I remember at least how Saturday morning movies were geared toward my age when I was growing up. Another good job.

*lzcutter* - Lynn, it seems you and I think a lot alike. The "Buddy Buddy" set is wonderful. I am of the opinion that God made Saturday afternoon for westerns so "Head 'em Up" goes on my calendar.

*fedya* - I love the music theme and I am quite familiar with all the songs except for "Unskinny Bop." Lots of good titles fit very well. Great job.

*kubrickbuff* - Preston Sturges and Claudette Colbert are among my favorites. "Death Penalty" is an interesting topic. Nicely done.

*nakano* - A fine start. You seem as though you'll take to it.

  16. I like the movie screen "coming up" listing. I have also seen the "Word of Mouth" opening which is fine. I don't think it better than the old one but it's ok. I haven't seen a trailer yet but what I have seen looks brighter and that is good.

Did I miss it or did they not do a "Star of The Month" featurette? I know things are tight but I hope those stay and I miss the monthly music video promos. Of course, I'd be happry to suffer through "The Essentials" promo a lot less. That has run its course for me.

I like the old style intro for Osborne. That may be the one thing to keep if only for the first prime time (8 pm) movie.

  17. Kathy:

I missed your birthday? Sorry. I hope you had a lovely day. Best wishes for many more and you get all the movies you want.

As far as the DVD/VCR you usually hook it from the cable box to the DVD/VCR and then to the TV. The trick is the VCR and TV have to be on channel 3 and put the cable box where you want to record. The downside is you can't watch something else while you are taping.

Good luck with however you set it up.

    Chris
