Glad you're back. I watched "A Man Alone" as well. Did you notice Milland directed it too? He went nearly a half hour before he said anything. It's an ok picture. I wished they gave a reason for Alan Hale Jr giving such a bad description of his shooter. I'm really glad Bond had more to do than fall out of the bed. Those western crowds are always ready to lynch someone. I think most would enjoy it.

fxreyman: We are fine. My apologies as well if I overreacted.

>Movieman..... Once again you talk about me and this "conspiracy" thing which I never mentioned or implied.... talk about getting your facts straight! I don't know where that came from. I don't believe I said you said anything about a conspiracy. Nor did I for that matter. The only thing I said to you or about you was I thought the post was mistakenly directed to you. Everything under the line of asterisks was meant generally. That's why they were separated. I'm sorry. I won't make that mistake again.

I hardly think what I wrote was ill tempered. It is simply a possibility based on the drednm reaction. I wasn't condemning anyone as I was throwing out an idea. I think it's a problem when people aren't always careful to make sure they are talking to who they intend to talk to. It comes with practice but can be confusing. No condemnation. It was a suggestion as to why it wound up with his name on it. But because that person didn't take a minute to make sure they were directing their comment to the correct person there is all this. It seems odd that some new folks get on and we have trouble right off the bat. Maybe it's me. Maybe since I did a little research and found out about people and what they were like and how to post a message to the right person so that they would understand it and learn the personality of the board I didn't think it would be a problem for others to do. If someone wants to argue with someone, fine. Get your facts straight and be an adult about it.

I'm not saying she wasn't qualified. She would have to be to do her job. I had a problem that TCM paid her to come and talk about a movie that week and she couldn't be bothered to watch a film she was supposed to comment on. It wasn't about every classic but that particluar one. That's just sloppy.

I think the problem with Haskell was that she was so broad in her comment. She didn't say "some" or " most" the implication was "all." I don't really disagree that most women don't like those kind of comedians but knowing some who love Laurel and Hardy, the Marx Bros and Buster Keaton that statement was just a bit too inclusive. Admitting to not having seen "Gunga Din" the night it aired may have been her biggest sin. For a commentator to go in that unprepared is a disservice to the viewers.

I wonder if he meant to reply to you? This has been a problem with newer folks who may not understand the mechanics of the board. I've come across several in the past few days where somone responded to the wrong post-er. They either don't clearly point out who they are talking to or just hit the reply button to the most recent post and you get confusion. ************ Also a reason we may have had so many new threads is a failure to do any searching. This is not knocking anyone looking for information but a short search can find threads where one may be able to find an answer without multiple threads on the same topic. I guess some people might have done that just to make sure they weren't covering old ground again.

Theresa: You are very welcome. Don't be afraid to stand up for yourself. There are ways to do it and not be rude. I'm sure you will be fine. Chris

>Beautifully said. ** Thank you for the kind words. You added wonderfully to my statement. I look forward to reading your commentary on "High Noon." Anybody "seen" MissGoddess? ** except where I said "would would" instead of "why would." (darn.)

MissGreer: Schools are the way they are because the administration wants them that way. Teachers are mostly of a liberal persuasion. They are all for free speech until someone who thinks like you voices an opinion. Then they start putting restrictions on things. They really feel that if you disagree you can't possibly be right. What you said about marriage is quite right. As someone who has been married for almost 24 years it is about compromise and sacrifice. A marriage based on trading services is a marriage (if you can call it that) that cannot last. It is something to be worked on and not taken for granted. I love my wife and have enjoyed being married. If it was just about sex would would anyone bother. You stick up for yourself. They are the ones who could use a lesson in tolerance.

MissG: "Firecreek" is on DVD. It is a two-fer with "The Cheyenne Social Club."

The WWII film sounds like "The Purple Heart" with Dana Andrews. The Spencer Tracy movie is "Northwest Passage." TCM recently showed "The Gallant Hours" but I doubt it is on DVD.

Other posts have addressed this but to answer you it has been that the co-host lasts one season. The new co-host was on in November when they had guest programmers all month. They must have liked her work.

TCM is part of my expanded digital basic plan. It's not a pay-for channel like HBO. I have TCM On Demand as well. I don't have newar as many films as Kyle but I'll get 6 - 10 movies and a few shorts. They do show trailers of what is coming in the next week or so.

One of my favorites outside the standards is "Three Came Home." It allows her to get dirty and messy and play a different kind of part. She is held in a Japanese POW camp where she builds a relationship with Sessue Hayakawa because he is familiar with the book she has written. She's fun in "Without Reservations" where she also plays an author and with John Wayne. Message was edited by: Me

Totally OBSCURE Movies - Films that NOBODY Has Seen!
movieman1957 replied to Metropolisforever's topic in General Discussions
I saw "If I had A Million" a long time ago. I remember I wanted to see it because of all the names in it. It was ok and worth a look for that reason. I think "International House" was a similar film. That may have been on more recently. -
Thanks. I recorded in FR as it was more than two hours. I usually record in SP if it is short enough. I have to reset the clock about every week. Nothing seems to "reset" it but it is not terribly inconvenient. I have looked at the manual but I'll recheck the pages you mention. Thanks so much for your help. You are such a big help to all here. I appreciate your taking the time.

I've read through these and I don't think I caught anything on this topic. I have a Panasonic EMR-ES35V. It's been fine except for a clock that runs fast. It does a fine job copying my tapes but I noticed that the quality of color films is not that great, especially on newer films. (Last night "Unforgiven" looked great while I watched it on TV. This morning the DVD didn't look so great. Not awful, just not great and not near as good as the TV picture.) I have the hook up is that the cable comes through the box to the recorder and on to the TV. When the machine is off the picture is terrific.(It's digital.) Recordings then come off with a bit of a grainy look to it. I have no other cables than the basic cable coming from the box. I have tried a variety of discs but the condition seems uniform. Could the unit weaken the power to reduce the signal quality? Is it normal? If not, any ideas? Thanks.

Hi PK: Nice to see you around. Have you seen Blore in "San Diego, I Love You"? He cries at almost everything. It's pretty funny but it almost gets annoying, almost. Odd little fim. Chris

TCM...sticking by the Classics..ONLY
movieman1957 replied to AvaG92260's topic in General Discussions
Ava: Thank you for your repsonse. I didn't say what we think doesn't matter. It does. When people like "tcmprogrmmr" or "MGMWBRKO" visit and post on these boards by responding to a question on comment it is a grand thing. They do listen. However, I think there is far more info collected than what they get here. (Good as it is.) I know if TCM changed there would be a huge uproar. We felt that when AMC changed. (I was heartbroken.) Let us not forget that from a business point, at least as of last year, AMC had big increases in their viewership after they changed. I don't think I underestimate their commitment at all. Any network that will show the series of films TCM did in '07 surely has a commitment to us and their mission. Ultimately, it is out of their hands. I am happy for you to state your opinion. I'm happy for others too as well. It would be awfully dull. As Lynn said we have debated this to death. A short search will find at least six or seven threads that have been down this road in the last month. We will never come to a complete agreement. My only point was to be happy in what we have, know it could go away at any time and make the best of things while we can. Fred: Now, now Fred, you know we are not a private club at SSO. -
Re: Psst! I got the May 2008 listings right here. Posted: Feb 28, 2008 9:48 AM in response to: Terry_W Reply It is not permanent, just for this month, the 10th anniversary of Frank Sinatra's death. Here is the response from "tcmprogrmmr" about this very thing. The thread link is below. http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?threadID=123903&start=15&tstart=75

TCM...sticking by the Classics..ONLY
movieman1957 replied to AvaG92260's topic in General Discussions
I find it funny that so many come on here and DEMAND that TCM show this movie or don't show that movie. (and this is nothing new.) When you get down to it this is still the only place you can get what we get. Yea, there is Retroplex but that still falls far behind what we have here. First it's not our network. Does our opinion matter? Yes. Is it going to dictate what they do? Probably not. The number of people that post on this board compared to the total number of viewers is so small as to be insignificant. (Mind you, that is by number only.) From TCM's view their job is to attract more viewers. One way is by having the "31" days. Sometimes newer movies mean newer viewers. More viewers make the cable companies happy which may extend the life and scope of our beloved TCM. And if it were only about how good a movie was some of the dreck from the 30's and 40's have no place here either. I'm sure if the cutoff date for showing movies were back in the 70's, as some wish, the repeats would be more often and more annoying. As much as we would like the network is not our little club. Our little club is really the message board. TCM is a business. They operate, I believe, under the goodwill of Time/Warner who could at any minute think the words I dread - "A noncommercial channel that shows nothing but old movies? How are we going to make any money doing that?" While I don't think I have much of an interesting life I still can find things to do when something is on that I don't want to watch. Sometimes I come here. Go ahead and vent. It's good we have someplace to vent. Just remember that while we are heard we are not all there is to hear.
