  1. >I'm trying to think what song it is that Louis Armstrong sings where he mentions Lotte Lenya by name...I just heard it this morning and I've already forgotten the title.

I think you are trying to remeber "Mack The Knife."

I got a cool present for my birthday last year. A turntable that will convert vinyl albums for itunes and allow you to make a CD. It also serves as a regular turntable. (Even regular turntables aren't that expensive. Assuming you have the system to hook it up to.) It's been fun and it's great for those albums I have I know will never make it to CD.

  2. For anyone:

Do you think February is really like the Essentials in that they are trying to attract the new viewer? (I don't mean it sarcastically.)

I always thought they were trying to draw a balance of old and new viewers. Throwing in some familiar newer titles may cause someone to come back to catch some titles that aren't so new or familiar. I'm not saying I enjoy the newer ones or even agree with them. I figure they're trying to find a way to increase their viewership while sticking to their dedication to classic films the rest of the year. I don't think there is such a broad time frame any other time of year.

    Just wonderin'.

  3. My enjoyment of Sinatra tends to depend on the song. My parents had a couple of his albums. The "Trilogy" (?) and the one with "It Was A Very Good Year." We have one of his Christmas albums and he sounds asleep through most of it. But he had a great voice. My daughter gave my wife and I a Sinatra CD set for Christmas. My bride likes him more than I but I certainly appreciate his talent.

In that style of music my favorites are Andy Williams, Johnny Mathis and John Gary. Many people don't know Gary but his voice was so pure. He could be gentle and hold a note long after most mortals would have passed out. It's great so much of this music is being released again.

Many people may not know that Jackie Gleason had an orchestra he recorded with and they had such a lush and romantic sound. They had a great sound.

  4. April:

My mother introduced me to it. She is a very good pianist. (Comparatively, I'm mediocre.) She had many music books that had classical pieces in it. I would try and play them. This was mostly unsuccessful.

She also had a recording of Beethoven's 5th Symphony. I listened to that. Logic telling me Beethoven had at least four other symphonies drove me to the library and the local PBS radio station. Then I found all kinds of composers. One of the things my wife liked about me was introducing her to classical music. She's a casual fan. I wish I had more time to listen to it.

Sounds like your father and I would get along too. ("Revolver" is my favorite Beatles album.)

  5. >Chat away, Chris

OK. Other than your beloved ballet have you attended any concerts by your regional symphony?

Have you seen anyone that really impressed you ?

I ask because quite a few years ago my wife gave me season tickets to the Baltimore Symphony and one of the performances was by Yo Yo Ma. Not only was it the first time I ever heard Elgar's Cello Concerto (which is one of the most beautiful and eloquent pieces of music) it was the first time I had seen him. We sat about five rows back. It is generally considered too close but it was the perfect place to watch him. It was truly a grand experience.

There have been others wonderful concerts as well. All way in the past but still memorable.

  6. >I also love just about everything by Beethoven and Mozart.

Great. I have nearly all the major works from both. Someday we'll chat music. Anyone who can discuss Alan Parsons and Tchaikovsky with me (and westerns) is something to look forward to.

    It will be fun.

  7. >Anyone know where i can a schedule related to my channel.

It's hard to tell but if you look at the bottom of the primary page when you log on the site you should be able to see other web sites for other regions of the world.

Now back to our regularly scheduled "discussion."

  8. If Universal doesn't want to play ball what is TCM to do? Neither they nor Fox has ever been too anxious to work much with TCM. It's good they are talking.

We're getting Jean Arthur in "Easy Living." It's a small victory but a victory nonetheless.

  9. MissG:

How nice (and rare) you mentioned Alan Parsons. He doesn't get much attention though I always found him very innovative. I always enjoyed his instrumental tracks. Along with him it's The Beatles, Moody Blues, ELO, Fogelberg and others and A lady nearly no one knows named Jane Olivor.

    Classical:

    Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1

    Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony

    Soundtracks:

    Out of Africa

    Movie Songs:

    Moon River.

Love Is A Many Splendored Thing

The Days of Wine and Roses

    Can't help it, I'm old I guess.

  10. The top left hat is wrong for Rogers. I think we are both wrong though. I know the names as my father used to go a lot when he was a kid. I've not had a chance to see too many apart from William Boyd and maybe a rare title with Ken Maynard.

None of them really look familiar. The next set should have their horses as they were often as famous as the star.

  11. No one really knows and Maureen is not telling. She has said that Ford told her what to say. My guess she said something that was, shall we say, dirty so she could get that reaction.

She agreed to say it to Duke only on the condition that no one would ever tell. Apparently they held to that promise.

  12. > But it happens on occasion - though I still don't understand how the song "My Seet Lord" is an infringement of "He's So Fine".

I guess it is because the jury says so. It doesn't matter if it is unconscious or accidental. The fact that "He's So Fine" was famous and certain that Harrison would have heard it was enough. Im sure they had sheet music for both. I think you need several measures of music and some of the melody line was too close.

I know you know all this but I just thought I'd throw in my two cents. Frankly, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. There are only so many chords and melodies to go around.

  13. Poor man. You mentioned in your other thread about closed captioning, well Billy is an excellent excuse for it. Talk about your different volume levels.

For him just saying "HI HONEY, I'M HOME" must be something the whole street will now know.

  14. >Hi T---I don't care if I never see those "Gunsmoke" made-for-tv movies because I don't like to think of Matt behaving that ungallantly---I mean refusing to marry the mother of his children. Maybe she died, I don't really know.

I know this is going back a week, but I thought I'd give you a bit of an answer. In the series there was an episode where Matt gets hurt and suffers from anmesia. During the course of his recovery he "falls in love" with the woman, Michael Learned (The Waltons). During this time they have an affair. When Matt recovers he doesn't know what went on. Learned is not going to force him into a relationship he didn't knowingly commit to.

In the TV-movie "Gunsmoke: The Last Apache" Dillon discovers what happened. Learned reprises her role. He finds he has a daughter and this sets up their relationship for the last couple of movies.

More disturbing was in the first one Dillon has lived in the mountains and it is implied he may have had at least one child with an Indian woman. This is a small scene that happens at the begining and, as I recall, nothing more is said about it.

They are ok movies but past the first two there is nothing really "Gunsmoke" about them.
