  1. It was interesting as I was learning about L&H to see that they made so many versions of the same movie for international release. It's interesting they chose that route rather than just dub them.

I admire people like you who have such a devotion to their hobby. Thanks for the info.

  2. Correct. I like to say that to folks when I say goodbye.

I'll try and come up with something else soon. Don't want to make them too easy.

    For now, "Hail and Farewell."

  3. DwayneBrue:

Another terrific short with a family theme is "Brats." They play their own children. It's done on an oversize set. A good deal of it centers on them getting a bath and getting ready for bed.

I love the way Ollie is almost trying to figure out what will happen during those pauses. The way he looks at the camera as if to solicit sympathy is wonderful. Also the way Stan tries to help Ollie only to have the recipient retaliate to Ollie. One of my favorite bits is the laughing scenes. In "Blotto" and "The Devil's Brother" when they get laughing it's nearly impossible not to laugh.

    We need more.

  4. "Monkey Business." A lot of memorable scenes. The "closet" scene with Thelma Todd. The "Chevalier" bit trying to get off the boat. Groucho narrating the fight in the barn. Great dialogue. A favorite line is when a lady faints and Groucho urges the crowd to close in so she won't recover.

"Horse Feathers" and "Duck Soup" are at the top of my list with "MB."

Off the top of my head - What is the name of the play being worked on in "Room Service?".

  5. You're right. They are selling Christmas trees. I got it years ago on a VHS tape. The gradual destruction of their car and Finlayson's house is so matter-of-fact. There is no attempt to stop anything only the continued assault on each other's property. Since it's a silent you're not likely to see it anywhere but TCM unless you find it on a DVD colllection.

  6. Jason:

Welcome. Don't be so hard on yourself. Find joy in that you have found movie Nirvana. Others out in the world still wander in darkness. Here you will find fun, people with similar interests and possibly more information than you will ever be able to use. It will be fun knowing though. (You become the deciding factor in settling arguments.)

You assess the cable world well. After AMC one of my biggest disappointments is A&E. From concerts and "arts" specials down to shows like "Dog: The Bounty Hunter" we are left to scratch our head over what has become of whatever we once enjoyed. Thankfully, we still have TCM. It may not be perfect. It's hard to please everyone but imagine not having it at all. (It gives me pause.)

P.S. Classic films lovers can live in a solitary world. On the whole we are few. But, we are fun. Good luck.

  7. You're right, of course. I had a stupid moment there. I think I was thinking that "Zenobia" was to be an L&H project but Stan and Hal Roach had a falling out.

    Thanks for pointing it out.

  8. I've been a L&H fan for a long time. Long time ago I caught a station that showed L&H shorts and I got to tape most of their sound shorts. It's a great way to spend 20 minutes whether you sit to watch specifically or are waiting on your family to get ready to go out.

Keep hope TCM showed quite a few of their feature films last fall. Hope you caught last night's movies.

Chameleon - and 90% of the time that is what you'll get. Most of the time this is a fun and informative place to be (and sometimes when you do have other things to do.) There is plenty to share and plenty of other threads to do it on. Hang in.

  10. To bring Trump and "The Brady Bunch' into this is more than ridiculous. And calling names is unbecoming. If we were going to get Edgar Burgoyne and his singing pig or segments of the show outside of the movie stars then I don't want them. As interested as I would be in the John Lennon interview it doesn't belong on TCM.

Like yanceycravat, the more I can find out about a movie or its stars the more interesting the film can become. Good Lord, if we didn't have that chance this whole forum would be pointless. Nobody would know anything or learn anything. I imagine that these stars must have thought this was a worthwhile way to spend 30 minutes or an hour.

P.S. bonus points to chameleon for using "obfuscates." At least you're elevating the level. Well said.

  11. Do you want to stop showing Private Screenings as well? I know Cavett is not to everybody's liking and his style is different than Osborne's but I think Cavett treated these stars with respect. (I'm sure you know Douglas and Griffin were another kind of show.)

We all have a line. It's just different. When the Brady Bunch showup we'll all get together and burn our TVs. I think we are safe.

  12. I'm with you. As long as it is limited to people who are part of the actors you'll find on TCM it'll be fine. I remember a good many of Cavett's interviews with Groucho. Sometimes they were less interviews and more Groucho showing off but who better to show off. I also saw Cavett interview Hepburn. Most interesting.

Cavett is a very smart host and can be quite funny. These are not Leno/Letterman type interviews. I think TCM viewers would be interested in these shows.

  13. I have only seen one Langdon picture. That was "Zenobia" with Oliver Hardy. This was the only movie made byHardy without Laurel after their teaming. I caught only for that reason. The movie was not anything to get excited about. I wasn't that impressed and kept wishing for Stan. By this time he was long past his popularity. He did write for L&H.

I rarely, if ever hear his name mentioned. Like you, I heard he was quite popular, mostly in silent shorts.

  14. One of my wife's favorite films. My family frequently sees it as part of a film festival in Baltimore's Little Italy section of town. It is played outdoors as the last film of the festival. It's shown on the side of a building projected from an apartment bedroom across a parking lot. (Not unlike some of the movie itself). It is quite popular in this area. The atmosphere certainly adds to the enjoyment. My wife and kids would certainly consider it a classic.

On their suggestion, it doesn't count if you get the dubbed version.
