  1. "Don't touch my board. It's my board, you hear? Oh, and that's my arrow too."
  2. Ostracized? No sir. A good deal of the fun is listening to someone who hasn't seen something that we are more familiar with to see how you think of it. It is a chance for us to get a different perspective. Also, if you were who am I going to talk to about the finer points of Brahms? Edited by: movieman1957 on Dec 3, 2010 4:09 PM. It helps to have all the words in there.
  3. It only makes sense as that is the day the new "True Grit" opens. (If I recall correctly.)
  4. That is why I keep that link handy. (You probably know Moira found it first.)
  5. JF: Well, in the literal sense. I have heard people say it is the most germ laden thing, almost anyway, you can meet. I like checks. Sir Francis: So glad to have made you smile.
  6. Stare if you must. Dream if you will. I would never question the choices of the Great Maven. >Next up: Sexy beasts.. I had to do a double take.

  8. I find it amazing that you have watched a film 10 or 12 times that you didn't necessarily love. And then to come away with a whole new appreciation for it is something most interesting. I'll sometimes go back and watch something I am not thrilled about because we may be talking about it but I don't recall a revelatory viewing, much less after that many viewings. Maybe another film for my festival.
  9. It is in our house. The problem, I would guess, would be a rights issue. Maybe somebody else has it. One day maybe TCM will have a day long "Christmas Carol" marathon.
  10. So, what is she buying? Money itself may not be dirty but Kim should be careful of where it came from. I have a tendency to be cynical in things like this. Just off of that clip I think she's looking for a break. Now I have to go see the whole thing. Luckily, Netflix is on the job.
  11. *Men! Always wanting sexy funny and taking funny sexy for granted. ( > sigh! < )* Okay. Now I have to ponder the finer points of the difference. Hmmmm.
  12. You certainly came with an open mind. A fine commentary. I think the part of "Stagecoach" you refer to about the music is when it first sets out? If I recall correctly I got the sense it was nothing more than to help build excitement. A sense of this is not your ordinary coach ride. Maybe you're a little more up when the action does start. Of course, with my luck it was probably lifted and just stuck on there like those old bad "B" westerns that seemed to recycle music. Oh. I agree with you that having spent several years visiting here and being involved in these discussions that you can't help but watch films differently. So many different perspectives and ideas make watching now much more interesting. I'm now looking for things that I might bring to a conversation. Little things that might make it more interesting. Also I wonder while I watch if I'm not over-thinking things. Edited by: movieman1957 on Nov 30, 2010 11:25 AM
  13. >The important thing was the character of the man and I think I got that right. You certainly did.
  14. >What about Ralph RIchardson?? I'm outside the box too. In fact, are there any Ralphs who aren't sexy? You are wonderfully outside the box. Ben Johnson proves that as well. On the other hand - I am the box. (Perfect for recycling.)
  15. Ralph Bellamy and Roy Rogers. There is thinking outside the box.
  16. I didn't even think of "WOTRW." The other one that came to mind was "The War Wagon." He and Douglas are going to steal some gold but frankly they are both so flat out fun that it is hard to think of them doing something illegal. BTW, unless you are am absolute completist for Wayne don't knowck yourself out getting to "The Conqueror." (You could make a good argument for skipping "The Barbarian and The Geisha" and even "Circus World.")
  17. >I see a great similarity between York, Nettles of She Wore a Yellow Ribbon His name is Brittles. Nathan Brittles in "SWAYR."
  18. I think that maybe the perception of Duke as always good guy is that even when he is not really the good guy it is still hard not to like him. With all the bad the Ethan Edwards carries with him you get just enough of his tender side with Martha that you just can't really hate him. Even though he flat out kills Liberty Valance he has served a greater good. The way he treats Hallie and Ranse makes us feel sympathy for him when he loses control after the killing and losing Hallie. Shoot, we feel sorry for him as soon as opening credits are barely over. He's supposed to be an outlaw in "Angel and The Badman" but that doesn't last and whatever bad he is supposed to have done is only by reputation. We don't see him do anything. About the nastiest he gets, as I recall, is "Red River." His heart goes cold and there is only revenge in it. But you see just enough love under all those promises to get Matt that you can't believe he'll do it. "The Conquerer" maybe. He certainly played a nasty historical figure but I can't remember how mean he might have been.
  19. >I'm curious about it because of how you described Kim's character to me. Picnic is the "Kim" film I'm most interested to watch. I wonder if she's sexy in that one. From what I remember I think she is. I don't recall her being pretentious or obvious about it which makes it sexy for me. She plays a kind of dumb blonde who is willing in "Pfffft" with Jack Lemmon. She is aware of her beauty and feels men are intimidated by it but I don't find her willingness, even though she is quite attractive, to be all that sexy.
  20. For someone who claims to not have a love life (but is a self confessed romantic) you sure know a lot about this stuff.
  21. This may have been the only point is Wayne's career he could have played this part. Two years later the idea of him playing a subordinate to anyone would have been nearly unthinkable. It does give him a chance to play a quiet role. In one sense I am not sure it is not unlike his part in "They Were Expendable." At least there he had a more proper leader.
  22. Since I brought it up, though part for fun, can you explain to those not familiar with it yours and the other ladies fascination with Ben Johnson. He is a man that would not appear to be sexy in real sense of the word but I marvel and enjoy the way you and the other ladies talk about him at the Oasis. It is enough to make guys like me think there is hope for the more plain of us.
  23. What did I start? You are right. There is sexy and attractive. For my take what is sheer physical beauty is not always sexy to me. I don't find Marilyn Monroe all that sexy. Yes, she is gorgeous but her personality (on screen) doesn't do anything for me. I hated "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." I thought she was just cheap there. Part of who they are is what I find to be "sexy" along with their looks. I think *Jean Arthur* is a dream. I think she is beautiful but she is fun, sweet and often self assured. *Claudette Colbert* for the same reasons but there is always a "lady" right there. She never loses her dignity. *Maureen O'Hara* as much for her attitude and self confidence. Throw *Myrna Loy* and *Ginger Rogers* for all the same reasons. I have a pattern.(Maybe it is because they counter my own lack of confidence. Throw in *Carole Lombard* for good measure. There are plenty who are beautiful but I don't read sexy. *Hedy Lamarr* (who may be the most beautiful) doesn't strike me with a strong personality. *Gene Tierney* is gorgeous but maybe "The Mating Season" is where I find her the most sexy. *Grace Kelly* is complete elegance but she lacks fun. Those who obvious in being sexy I don't always find them that way.
