  1. I saw "The Trail of The Lonesome Pine" years ago. It is about the earliest color feature there was. I don't remember much about it but when you talk about it like this I'll make sure I catch it soon.

    (Several minutes having passed....)

I went to Netflix and added it. I noticed at the bottom it said "This film is - Romantic, Emotional." Thanks for confirming.

  2. No doubt the five were family members.

I will sometimes browse the reviews to see if they know what they are talking about. Sometimes those one and two star reviews are because someone got a bad disc. I don't often go much beyond the first page unless there are widely varied comments.

  3. My goodness. This just goes to show that you can never say all that needs to be said about a film. I've joked about our frequent chats on this film but here we have more and a deeper review of the characters. This is grand writing.

As I am reading I am thinking of the characters and their relation to the law and the relative weakness or strength in the group.

Linc Appleyard is charged with being the defender, upholder enforcer of the law. He is given the most power of the law. Yet he is the weakest character in the movie. Not only can he not carry out any of his duties he shows no responsibility with his constant mooching from the diner.

Stoddard is the biggest advocate of the law but has no power to do anything about it. He talks a good game but he does it as long as someone is there to back him up. (I am not sure he is conscious of that but he knows he can't do it.) Though this really becomes his career. As a senator he will help pass legislation that he will have no part in enforcing. While in Shinbone he may be right in everything he says but it does him little good.

Doniphon rivals Valance in power but maybe even falls short because he does have values. I think part of his reluctance to do anything like being sheriff is that he doesn't want to be bothered. He knows he could do it. He may even care but it's more than he wants to do. Save for Valance the town has gotten along quite well without any law, i.e Appleyard. I agree with your assessment on his reluctance.

Valance I think may be the strongest of the lot because he has the least regard for the law. There are no consequences. There is no power to stop him. Would things have been different if Doniphan were sheriff? But he's not so Valance is free to do what he wants.

I am not sure if any that seems logical but the differences struck me.

  4. >Melvyn...... naaaaah. I do like him very much in Theodora Goes Wild. He's almost attractive, and somehow, brittle pent up Irene makes Melvyn seem sexy, and boring, good old pal Melvyn makes Irene seem beautiful and racy.

If Melvyn had done nothing but "Thedora Goes Wild" that would be enough for me. It's nice he got to work a while though.

  5. The chase scenes were good. The finale across that bridge and up the tower was certainly exciting especially with the high angle shots. I guess Barry was too old to run so they have to get Taylor to do it.

(My father's name is Don Taylor so it is funny to see that name in any film credits.)

  6. Cookies for everyone? Great. (Can I get chocolate milk with that?)

Thanks to you all for the very nice thoughts. It is nice to see some of my favorite people say hello from many of my favorite people. I hope that whatever I have done has been enjoyable and worth your time.

Oh, Jean. We'll dance right after we finish our cookies.

CM: A good Groucho pun. And I know one when I see one. I often see myself as a pun. That's right, people groan when I talk. :)

MissG: Thank you. I should look so comfortable in a saddle.

Molo: Yeah, I like that picture.

Thanks "Ro" for the cookies and everything else.

What do we talk about now?

  7. I just watched "The Naked City." I don't know who had the great idea of having Barry Fitzgerald in the lead but that was a wonderful idea. Some of the other actors weren't so great. The narration was annoying in some parts.

Some of it was fun in "Spot The Famous To-Be Actor." Cameos by Kathleen Freeman, James Gregory (who was awfully young but the voice seemed to close not to be his) and Paul Ford.

I don't think it is the end all of noir but it was a pretty good film.

  8. I agree MissG that the last photo would be from "The Alamo." The HGWT photo with the camel reminded me of that first year episode. That was an early, if odd clue, that there was more to the man than one might expect.

I watched tonight's episode and Charles Bronson was in it (again.) He may have only done three or four but between Encore and Netflix it seems like he is turning up often.

It seems quite a few actors just made the rounds from one show to another. Peter Whitney also showed up in episodes of "Gunsmoke" and "Combat" (and something else that escapes me )in a couple of days of each other.

  9. It was my bride's first time for "Leave Her To Heaven." She did enjoy it. I saw "Shanghai Gesture" earlier in they ear. Weird, I think, is a good description for it. We talked about it in this thread if I recall correctly. I think Sir Francis really liked it. I didn't care for it so much but was glad I saw it. It is pretty hard to describe. You just have to see it.

  10. >Or I'll get the "emergency broadcast system" interruption.

That happened to me once when I recorded "Four Faces West" with Joel McCrea. It happened right near the end and I thought it would never be on again. Luckily, I was wrong.

I knew you had a Panasonic as the background on the menu was the same as mine. I've probably had it four years. The only problem is the clock runs fast so about once a week I have to reset it.

  11. MissG and JF:

Most of the HGWT are on Netflix to watch. What is strange though is that there are sometimes groups of episodes that can't be watched by streaming. Those I still have to wait for the mail.
