Letterbox RO intro's for the first time tonight

Point of interest... The intros were back to being 4:3 tonight for Lionel Barrymore. Curiouser and curiouser... Yancey Edited by: yanceycravat on Aug 11, 2012 2:41 PM -
Letterbox RO intro's for the first time tonight
yanceycravat replied to yanceycravat's topic in General Discussions
kriegerg69 Thanks for responding. I'm guessing I've been watching the standard broadcast, As I said Ben's intro have been all wide screen for some time now. Any time there's been a guest with RO it's been widescreen. But just RO alone had always been square until last night. Perhaps TCM has gone HD through out Time Warner in my area. Either way is fine. I just found it interesting. Thanks again for writing. Yancey -
Curious if anyone noticed this tonight. I watch TCM on channel 292 from TWCable in Los Angeles. Last night the intros were, as they've always been, in the regular academy size. Tonight, for the first time ever, RO's intro's were letterboxed. Usually they've only been letterboxed on special occasions. BM's intro's have been letterboxed for some time. No cmplaints here. Just wondering why the change. Anyone know? Yancey

As a fan of the Barrymore clan I've tried and tried to get through this picture with little success. It's one of those films (for me anyway) that I want to love but just can't manage to make it past Flynn's exit. (I struggle to get even that far.) Yancey

Here's a strange Paramount film that should be part of 31 Days of Oscar but never seems to make it: *The Scoundrel* *(1935)* I bet I haven't seen it in 30 years. Crazy story, Unusual cast. Really the whole thing is out there. D: Ben Hecht, Charles MacArthur. Noel Coward, Julie Haydon, Stanley Ridges, Martha Sleeper, Ernest Cossart, Eduardo Ciannelli, Alexander Woollcott, Lionel Stander. Fascinating Hecht-MacArthur original about a cynical, self-centered N.Y.C. publisher who toys with other people's lives--until his own existence is put on the line. Bizarre, sophisticated, indulgent--and unique. Coward, in his first starring film, puts over a challenging and unusual role. Famed critic/ curmudgeon Woollcott plays one of the hangers-on, while Hecht and MacArthur have a funny flop-house cameo. Academy Award winner for Best Original Story. How about it TCM - get those rights issues straightened out for this Lost and Found film! Yancey

In Search of DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS
yanceycravat replied to Sophalee's topic in General Discussions
Not only would I like to see DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS but another long lost Robert Preston film ALL THE WAY HOME. A marvelous, quiet picture also portraying life in the early part of the 20th Century. Some warm, tender and funny moments. Preston is quite superb. The two films would be perfect together. It's been my hope that TCM would try to make them part of a Robert Preston night or SUTS day. Anyone else feel the same? Yancey -
Last night, during the intro to SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS, the TCM Editor made a mistake that no one caught. Robert Osborne mentions some of the great Preston Sturges stock company featured in the picture. As he mentions their name they cut back to show the actor. Robert Osborne mentioned Eric Blore and instead of Blore they cut to Robert Greig who plays "Sullivan's butler." Now it might be considered an obvious error since Blore played a lot of butlers and in this film he plays "Sullivan's Valet". (Greig played a lot ot butles too!) Still, I was surprised no on caught it before it aired. Once you know who he is there can be no mistaking Eric Blore! Also, something that surprised me, RO called Sturges regular Jimmy Conlin - Jimmy Conklin. Yancey

Forum Curtain Call for "Now Playing: The Show"
yanceycravat replied to hlywdkjk's topic in General Discussions
I always thought Fox had a great opportunity to rival TCM but alas no one there seemed to want to take the bull by the horns. Since the cream rises to the top TCM has become the de facto leader in presenting classic films. The only other studio that could achieve this kind of success would be (or would have been) Universal with their incredible library of Uninversal and Paramount films. Not to mention their vast library of television programming. Why no one at Universal has done this either is far beyond my comprehension as it seems a no brainer. Finally - if you notice, Nearly all the film companies are using the TCM brand to promote their classic film titles now being pressed to DVD. They drank the kool-aid realizing there's no better outlet for their product than TCM. Where else can anyone go to see classic films presented as they are on TCM? Where better to plug your product than TCM? Without TCM having become what it is today many of these classic films would still be in the vault rather than being aired or released on DVD. Thanks TCM!!! Yancey -
Forum Curtain Call for "Now Playing: The Show"
yanceycravat replied to hlywdkjk's topic in General Discussions
I believe I can tell you in two words why Now Playing: The Show is limited this year... Budget Cuts It costs money to put that show together and I'm guessing it's an expense that can be avoided and applied elsewhere. Especially now that TCM is licensing a lot more films from other libraries. As a TCM fan from the start (and a film history buff) I can say I sometimes enjoy the between movie programming more than the movies themselves. I miss Now Playing because it did highlight things that I sometimes overlook. For example. I believe TCM missed a great opportunity to highlight, on air, John Fricke co-hosting the Judy Garland 90th birthday tribute. I was glad I stumbled upon RO at 9 in the morning. I was surprised not to see Ben. I recorded all the intro's that day so I could have them in my collection of Intros and Wrap-ups. I don't always check the website but I have TCM going 24/7 on my main DVR Box. Just in case! Yancey -
L'Avventura for The Damned, a step up
yanceycravat replied to slaytonf's topic in General Discussions
The change had to be very last minute. They didn't air the interstitials announcing the up coming movie, a wrap-up for THE CIRCLE or an intro for L'avventura. Too bad too. I wanted to hear RO's follow up after THE CIRCLE. Yancey -

*TCM MUST NEVER, EVER SHOW THESE MOVIES AGAIN:* ** 1) Chico Marx playing goofy Italians - He wasn't Italian. Or any portrayal of Italians with big families, as barbers, restaurant owners and definitely not Organ Grinders with Monkeys! 2) Irish Cops, Washerwoman, bartenders, priests or Clark Gable playing Parnell. Especially Clark Gable playing Parnell. 3) Blacks (whether they be African-Americans, Jamaican-American or any other hyphen-Americans) playing Maids, Butlers, Jockeys, Porters or seen eating watermelon, chicken or playing dice. 4) John Qualen playing smiple minded Swedes - He was Canadian of Norwegian descent. Any movie where he is a simple minded Norwegian might be acceptable. You must never show Edward G. Robinson in Our Vines Have Tender Grapes or John Wayne in The Long Voyage Home. 5) Pat O'Brien playing Knute Rockne 6) Caucasians playing Asians, especially, The Good Earth, Broken Blossoms, Breakfast At Tiffany's, Majority of One (Twice as offensive) Charlie Chan or Fu Manchu. And for the love of God please never show another war movie where the word "****" is used. 7) No Max Davidson shorts, ever! Or any movie where someone Jewish, runs a pawn shop or second hand clothing store. 8) No Al Jolson or Eddie Cantor movies ever. Unless they don't appear in black face. 9) No Westerns where even a single white can be seen playing a Native American. 10) No Movies where whites are playing Middle Easterns. Especially Thief Of Baghdad (Any Version) 11) No Movies where Little People are referred to as "Midgets" or Munchkins. 12) West Side Story must never be shown. Or movies such as Captain From Castille, Journey Into Fear, The Old Man and The Sea and The Wild Bunch. 13) No movies with "swishy" Gays. And definitely no movies where Rock Hudson plays a heterosexual male in love with a red-blooded woman. Well that's it for starters TCM. I'll expect immediate changes in the up coming schedules. If not I shall report you at once to any or all anti-defamation leauges the above films may apply to. Yancey

(due to 5 different films playing at the same time, but you can only be at one.)filmlover - I was at Meet TCM too, Forgot about that one. Plus a few of the RO tapings in the Lobby. Not as many as last year though. There were some very hard choices this year for me. Overall I am quite contented with what I saw and don't feel like there was any one film I wished I had seen instead. I also feel like I was scheduling my own personal TCM viewing for the week. Which is pretty cool. Yancey -

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER went a little long but was so incredibly fascinating 12 of us cornered Don Lynch and peppered him with another 30 minutes worth of questions. He was extremely gracious to allow us to do that. Frankly we 12 could have talked about Titanic all night. I suspect he may have been OK with it too but they had to close the theater. Another marvelous TCM memory. Yancey -

> {quote:title=cody1949 wrote:}{quote}If you are truly interested in comic genius, a full month of everything done by Laurel and Hardy would be most welcomed. Nothing personal, but I rank Jerry Lewis with The Three Stooges and Abbott and Costello. I find the ranking of comedians a very subjective thing. I would never have put Abbott and Costello with The Three Stooges. For one reason they only made features. And let's face it, even Laurel and Hardy had their turkeys. As much as I like them I'm not a major fan of anything past the Roach era. If not Star of the Month, Jerry definitely deserves a day in August if he hasn't had one already. Yancey
