  1. Like many of you I'm a huge fan of William Powell so I'm really happy to see this as well. Amazing TCM, as part of Joan Blondell's day, showed LAWYER MAN (1933) for the first time in at least 7 or 8 years. I'd been waiting for that one. Great cast. A fun picture. I'm hoping they'll show some of his Paramount or Universal films but I fear there's enough MGM and WB films to fill out an entire month's schedule. Please correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I know there are only two films from the TCM library that have never aired --- MGM's "Escapade (1935)" I'm guessing it must be tied in up in a rights issue. WB and Vitaphone's The Road to Singapore (1931) Again a guess, but must have a conflict of some kind with Paramount's movie of the same name. Anyone know about either of these films. Yancey
  2. Hey Sue - Hope you've been well. I'm far from the maddening crowd so I'm not worried. Just thought it was funny seeing this happen at the same venue as the Festival. What? The long lost print of Convention City won't be shown after all! Someone call out the riot squad!!! TCM fans are running roughshod all over Hollywood Blvd!!! Yancey
  3. Depending on the film, I can see TCM Fans reacting the same way... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43922157/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/ Yancey
  4. The day to day norm has been for Robert Osborne to wrap around 4 movies a night. It's pretty unusual if it's just three. Last night, though, was quite unusual. I've noticed sometimes the wrap-up will be cut if the next movie was pulled due to a schedule change. In the case of THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE I was curious to hear what RO was going to say about it since up front he described it as one of his favorite movies. I found it disappointing not to see him. I especially wanted to hear some stuff on the British GASLIGHT. Kingrat, I watched it for what I think was the first time though throughout the movie I kept telling myself I think the murderer is... And I was right. So perhaps it's been so long since I've seen it I remembered nothing about it but that. It was quite good all over again! Yancey
  5. There was no follow up to THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE and then nothing on either end for the British version of GASLIGHT. Anyone know? thanks, Yancey
  6. I would like to echo kingrats sentiments about this film. As I have written elsewhere this screening was the highlight of the recent TCM Festival for me. I can honestly say that the same thing happened at our screening as described in the review. And that's some 70 years later. It was one of those magical moments that would depress me greatly if I heard others didn't have the same experience. I sincerely hope you do, Cinemaven! Yancey
  7. JB - Sorry to hear that. I was lucky this year in that I got in to everything I wanted to see. My festival plan worked like a charn. I had visions of not getting into NIGHT FLIGHT as that was the one film on which the whole festival sort of rested for me. I planned to get to the theatre by 9 am for the 10 am screening but when it was announced Drew Barrymore was going to be there I decided I'd better get there at 8:30 am! When I arrived there was already a line out the door. People had begun lining up at 8!!! I think my number was something like 88. As far as WTDW goes it was right after HOOP-LA which played in the same theatre. So that was just getting out of the theatre and getting back in line. It also played against two heavy hitters. MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM (Sinatra Sisters and Vicki Preminger) and REDS (Warren Beatty). I would never have seen either HOOP-LA or WTDW had Leonard Maltin not mentioned them as something worth catching. Up until that morning REDS had been my #2 festival choice to see after NIGHT FLIGHT. I changed my mind and caught THE CAMERAMAN as well. Thought it better to get two shorter movies in for one epic. Wonder if I'll be so lucky next year! Yancey
  8. > {quote:title=ChorusGirl wrote:}> The rarities...HOOPLA, WENT THE DAY WELL, NIGHT FLIGHT....were all sell outs. Here's hoping we will get even more next year! {quote} Seeing WENT THE DAY WELL with a full house was, for me, the highlight of the festival. I was fortunate enough to attend all three of those screenings. I have to say they were the most memorable events for me. Sitting with an audience who had never seen those movies before was truly and extraordinary experience. I believe HOOP-LA and WTDW were later added for those who missed them the first time around. I'm sure word of mouth encouraged the Festival programmers to offer additional showings. I promoted both to anyone, who hadn't seen them, to go if possible. I hope they felt as I did. Well worth it. Yancey
  9. > {quote:title=kingrat wrote:} > Yancey, *The Big Parade* with full orchestra sounds terrific. Save me a seat for that one!}{quote} KR - Sure thing! Two on the asile at the Egyptian and a private meeting with John Gilbert's daughter, Leatrice Joy Gilbert! Yancey
  10. I'd love to know what rare movies they're hoping to get. NIGHT FLIGHT was of particular interest to me and while not a great film I was glad for the experience of seeing it on the big screen. I'd love to see some of the early Fox Bogarts that have never seem to screen anywhere. Also some more shorts. They did play a few before some of the features. I had a thought that it might be nice to have one screen playing shorts all day so you can duck in between the main features. Dare I say it? THE BIG PARADE with a full orchestra. That would be amazing! Yancey
  11. > {quote:title=Boyer56 wrote:} I love the new TCM concept of "its not just a network, but a community." So true. I felt it everyday. {quote} It's always been my impression that TCM, more than any other channel anywhere, considers their fan base more than just paying customers. From what I saw at the Festival it really is a community. I believe I heard Ben Mankiewicz say as much in one of his televised interviews. For one thing I know people are very protective of their favorite films and film stars. TCM allows them to share in their love of these classics. It's amazing to me, all these years after AMC when down the tubes as a classic movie channel, people still feel betrayed. Fortunately AMC's demise only strengthened TCM's popularity and sense of community. Seems to me every viewer wants to protect it from a similar demise. Is there anyone on any other channel as beloved to their viewers as much as RO is? Does any other channel allow the viewers to have a say in programming as much as TCM does? Does anyone care about their content as much as the TCM employees do? We're only here a short time and maybe others feel as I do that, in some small way, we're the guardians of these memories until the next generation of viewers comes along to take our place. Making sure these films, the stars, the stories will never disappear. Yancey
  12. It was certainly a very warm atmostphere at the Festival. I kept wondering if there would pushing, shoving and angry words but there were none that I saw. Despite it being against policy people happily held seats and places in line and I never heard anyone complain. FOlks shared memories about actors they met and movies they saw. Ideas and comments regarding all things TCM flowed freel. If only the whole world could only be a little more like the TCM Classic Film Festival it might just be a better place. Anyone else feeling post Festival let-down? I know I am! Yancey
  13. Keep 'em coming folks... Yancey
  14. markbeckuaf - Glad you liked my post! It often doesn't matter if the movie is good or not, as long as one of these great faces graces the screen I'm very happy to watch. Harold Huber John Litel Ben Welden Thomas Gomez Edward Brophy Mantan Moreland Maude Eburne Alison Skipworth Laura Hope Crews Albert Bassermann Dwight Frye Maria Ouspenskaya Beryl Mercer Willie Best Grady Sutton Yancey
  15. lzcutter - I feel adding Ben as "Host" to RO's Guest Programmer as a way of giving Ben a chance to take part in the celebration. I don't believe anyone would see this as a passing of the mantle. Yancey
  16. I think your RO as Guest Programmer idea is perfect. Not just films that he likes but feels have some personal significance to him or his career. It's probably too much to ask that a whole week be given over to celebrate RO which would follow the festival but so many of see RO as the face of the Channel and he's done so much to promote it that it seems a fitting celebration. So we've got Robert Osborne as STAR OF THE MOINTH for May 2012 (With a nice portrait on NOW PLAYING) 1) A Private Screenings with Alec Baldwin Interviewing RO 2) Ben Mankiewic hosts RO as Guest Programmer 3) Celebrity and TCM fans giving filmed congratulations during the week 4) Some Retro Intros... RO through the years introducing films 5) Featuring movies starring actors with Robert in their name 6) Best films of 1932 7) Showing of THE CONSTANT NYMPH just to hear Charles Coburn call out "Robert O" throughout the film. What else can we come up with? Yancey Edited by: yanceycravat on May 6, 2011 6:55 PM

  18. It seems to me the folks at TCM will be able to figure out an appropriate way to celebrate Robert Osborne's 80th Birthday next year. Unless, of course, he doesn't want that to happen. One thing I'd like to see - Alec Baldwin turn the tables on RO for a Private Screening. If anyone could do a great job interviewing Robert Osborne it would be Alec Baldwin. Anyone else agree? How would you like to share in the celebration? Yancey
  19. if you're happy to see... Ned Sparks Edna May Oliver Frank McHugh Edgar Kennedy Tom Kennedy Guy Kibbee Aline McMahon Ruth Donnelly Irving Pichel Dick Elliott Gene Lockhart Alan Dinehart Grant Mitchell Harry Davenport Just to name a few of the great character actors! Yancey
  20. lzcutter - Thanks for posting the update... I'd been wondering. Marked a special place in my Now Playing Guide so I'll be sure to watch. Yancey
  21. Tonight 4/4, after STEPPING OUT, TCM aired the Jackie Cooper TCM Remembers for the first time. It was extremely well done. Yancey
  22. Cujas - For everyone's sake please don't buy any more dvds! Yancey
  23. I have to say this, too, from childhood to old age he always looked the same to me... You always knew it was Jackie Cooper! Yancey
  24. I saw him speak at the Screen Actors Guild about two or three years ago. He was still on top of his game. Yancey
  25. Just saw this ... Hope there will be a nice tribute to him. http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20487083,00.html?cid=msvista_news1 Yancey
