  1. I'm fortunate to own an uncensored script for SO THIS IS AFRICA. Oddly enough it's dated October 17, 1932 with the title THAT'S AFRICA lined out and SO THIS IS AFRICA written above it. Apparently it belonged to Sound recordist Edward Bernds as his name is written in the corner.

The film runs 61 minutes but the script has approimately 110 pages with a lot of them x'ed out. I wonder how much of this script was actually filmed.

I've not been able to do a side by side comparison. I keep hoping TCM will show the film again.

I would even entrust them to create a new opening for all the Robert Osborne-introduced films. I believe that opening (the deco building with "Robert Osborne" on the marquee) is the last remaining piece from the very beginning of TCM.

    Kyle -

I agree. I guess it's the last vestige remaining. I would assume they are working on that as well.

No one probably realizes this now, since it's been many years, but the Osborne opening was even longer early on! It was prudent to cut it down.

Just as it was an interesting change to alter the mood of Osborne's promo for the guest programmer. Do you recall how somber it used to be?

    > Now, if they could re-purpose the music from the *Oscar* salute more often I would be in heaven as I loved the piece of music that was composed for the 2 minute spot.

I'm with you on that as well.

It's interesting to me all the thought and effort that must go into doing a change like this, and for all the people who watch TCM as ardently as we all do, you're the only one who commented on my post.

Wasn't there a big to-do when they finally changed from the long lasting "Old Tyme" look and sound?

I thought more people would be as relieved, as I was, that the city look was finally over and there was a return to "a classy and modern but at the same time very old-fashioned" theme.

  4. Personally I like the new movie themed look of TCM. I understood the TCM City concept but it never really did anything for me. How did that relate to movies?

I especially like that the trailers are now shown on the "movie screen" I thought it was somewhat annoying to view the trailers on those slanted billboards.

Kudos to whomever gave the greenlight to the "New" TCM.

It's modern but it is also movie themed! Hooray for that concept!

  5. Tons of 1930's films rarely shown including...

    Sept. 3 Wednesday - 7:15 AM

    *Hold 'Em Jail (1932)*

Two salesmen sent to jail on trumped-up charges build a prison football team. Cast: Bert Wheeler, Robert Woolsey, Edna May Oliver. Dir: Norman Taurog. BW-66 mins, TV-G

    -------

This film has not been shown on TCM in the last five years. It may even be longer. Now if they could only air *So This Is Africa* I'll have seen all the Wheeler and Woolsey comedies.

All of Spetember is worth this showing!

  6. Here are my two picks for July... Two really rare Paramount titles....

See my Jeopardy question at the bottom -

*10:00 PM Las Vegas Nights (1941)*

A vaudeville act tries to turn a broken-down house into a posh nightclub. Cast: Constance Moore, Bert Wheeler, Phil Regan. Dir: Ralph Murphy. BW-90 mins

*A very early appearance of Frank Sinatra and a rare solo appearance of Bert Wheeler after the death of Robert Woolsey...*

    *Rhythm Romance (1939)*

A carnival con artist tries to ride his girlfriend's singing talents to the big time. Cast: Bob Hope, Shirley Ross, Una Merkel. Dir: George Archainbaud. BW-65 mins

*Orginally titled "Some Like It Hot (1939)"*

Which two movies will most likely get pulled before July?

  7. ChipHeartsMovies -

Mickey Rooney was already honored by the Motion Picture Academy. It is unlikely they will do it again unless he wins a competitive award.

    See below -

    Yancey

    1983 - Honorary Award

In recognition of his 50 years of versatility in a variety of memorable film performances.

    1939 - Juvenile Award

    Shared with:

    Deanna Durbin

For their (Durbin/Rooney) significant contribution in bringing to the screen the spirit and personification of youth, and as juvenile players setting a high standard of ability and achievement.

  8. Just read this on the IMDB...

Hope it's true. Hope it's soon!

Hewlett-Packard has signed a deal with Sony Pictures to turn out DVDs from the studio's library whenever customers request them, the Los Angeles Times reported today (Thursday). The deal will allow consumers to order movies that ordinarily would not be stocked by dealers because they are too obscure or too old. HP indicated that it expects to sign similar deals with other studios. "We're hoping this provides another option to make available products that wouldn't necessarily garner widespread retail shelf space," Jason Spivak, head of strategic development at Sony Home Entertainment, told the Times.Added Doug Warner, head of HP's digital content business, "If studios can sell more catalog than previously, they can generate more money."

  9. Bill -

Below is what I believe to be a complete list of these musical pieces.

Please note that the "Merry Wives" 35MM Version is just that. There are different shots of the orchestra used. It is NOT a pan and scan version of the Cinemascope Version.

    Capriccio Italien (1953)

La Gazza Ladra Overture - (The Thieving Magpie) - (1954)

    M-G-M Jubilee Overture (1954)

Overture - Poet and Peasant (1955)

Overture to The Merry Wives of Windsor (1953) - 35MM Version

Overture to The Merry Wives of Windsor (1953) - Cinemescope Version

    Strauss Fantasy (1954)

  10. talkietime -

Judge Hardy and Son had numerous problems. The two Maisie films I can point to immediately were Ring Side Maisie and Swing Shift Maisie.

On Swing Shift Maisie the problems were numerous in the beginning scenes where Ann Sothern was doing the dog act and James Craig was on the phone.

It was quite obvious and not worth watching because I sat there not enjoying the movie but waiting for the problems to happen again. I just turned the TV off.

  11. "I bulked the recording of Hot Water with the five Durango Kid movies that followed. I have found no similar problems while skipping through these other films at five-minute intervals."

    talkietime -

I did the same as you - bulk recorded. At first glance none of the Durango Kid movies appear to have any problems on my end as well. Over the next few days I hope to be able to examine them more closely.

If you look at the third screen capture you will see the two big pixilated bars. The action played behind normally. I felt like I was watching HOT WATER through a prison cell.

I know several of the Maisie and Andy Hardy movies I tried to record were ruined by the same situation.

I was relieved to see that FOUR MOTHERS was unaffected. To my knowledge TCM hasn't shown that since at least before 2003.

  12. When you put it that way, yes, it is.

However the fear of only being able to do it once puts an edge on things that's quite unlike doing a play numerous times or a film with retakes. That added nervous energy can make or break the whole thing.
