  1. https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2018/09/14/oslo-s14.html Twenty-five years after Oslo, a deepening catastrophe for the Palestinians Thursday marked the 25th anniversary of Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin adopting the Oslo Accords at a meeting in Washington, with US President Bill Clinton hosting the affair. The accords were supposed to initiate a “peace process” that would result in a negotiated settlement between Israel and the Palestinians, resolving such issues as the borders between Israel and a Palestinian state, the future of illegal Zionist settlements, the status of Jerusalem and the right of return of Palestinian refugees. The deal was promoted as a path to the realization of the “right of the Palestinian people to self-determination,” supposedly to be achieved by means of a “two-state solution,” creating a Palestinian national entity in the lands occupied by Israel in 1967. The anniversary was barely observed in either Israel or the occupied Palestinian territories. A small meeting at the American Colony Hotel in East Jerusalem addressed by Palestinian and Israeli officials who had backed the accord was broken up by a group of angry young Palestinian demonstrators. Sections of the Israeli media published articles lamenting the “missed opportunities” of the so-called peace process, while even-handedly apportioning blame. In reality, Oslo served precisely the purpose for which it was intended, providing a cover for unrelenting Israeli aggression over the last quarter century.

The gubernatorial candidate for the Brazilian state of Parana, Florisvaldo Fier, popularly known as Dr. Rosinha, was attacked with an "explosive device" while handing out flyers in central Curitiba Thursday. Cellphone footage captured the moment the device exploded near the Workers' Party (PT) candidate as he walked to a political debate hosted at the Pontifical Catholic University of Parana. "All of a sudden an unknown assailant tossed a bomb at me, which exploded at my legs," Dr. Rosinha said, according to Viomundo. "I wasn't sure if it was a homemade bomb or one of those bombs used during Sao Joao (popular festivities celebrating the nativity of St. John the Baptist). All I know is that it was powerful and it exploded at my feet. Apart from the enormous shock, I couldn't hear anything."
  3. https://www.rt.com/news/438458-chemnitz-nazi-wolf-statues/ Statues of Nazi-saluting wolves appear in Chemnitz, Germany amid far-right & counter demos Under the eyes of Chemnitz’s Karl Marx statue, the sight of snarling bronze wolves with their right paws outstretched seems out of place. However, the artist behind the work hopes it will spark a “discussion” in German politics. Titled “the wolves are back?,” the installation features ten bronze statues of aggressive-looking wolves, many with their right paws outstretched as if they are doing a Hitler salute. Others, meanwhile, are blindfolded. Describing his work as a “political vigil,” artist Rainer Opolka’s installation in Chemnitz comes two weeks after the death of a German man, allegedly killed by two migrants, sparked protests and rioting in the city. “Some people in Chemnitz did the Hitler salute and, what is more, they hunted foreigners through the city,” Opolka explained to RT’s video agency Ruptly. “Therefore I am standing here [to say] democrats should not tolerate this.” Banners accompanying the statues hark back to Germany’s own troubled history of Nazism, with one warning: “Where one is hunted, one is later stepped on.” Another takes aim at the right-wing political party Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the anti-Islam group PEGIDA, accusing them of using hate to gain popularity. A third sign, however, takes a more even-handed approach, condemning all violence. Both the AfD and PEGIDA have seen a surge in popularity amid growing criticism and anxiety among Germans over Chancellor Angela Merkel's open-door policy of accepting migrants and refugees fleeing war in the Middle East. Opolka’s goal of bringing people “into a discussion” about the issues Germany appears to have already been achieved as of Thursday, with crowds gathering to look at the work and talk to the artist.
  4. https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2018/09/14/slot-s14.html Republican war criminals endorse CIA Democrat Slotkin Three of the most prominent figures in the Republican Party national-security establishment have endorsed the Democratic candidate for Congress in the 8th District of Michigan, Elissa Slotkin. The reason is simple: Slotkin was a valued accomplice of all three in the crimes perpetrated by the US government in Iraq and around the world. Slotkin has used her three tours of duty in Baghdad as a CIA agent as her main credential for election to the House of Representatives. She is challenging two-term incumbent Republican Representative Mike Bishop, in a race now considered a toss-up. Her first television commercial highlighted her role in the CIA and her connection to the US invasion and occupation of Iraq. Three top civilian Republican national security officials and a former general all endorsed Slotkin this week. The four include John Negroponte, former ambassador to Iraq and the first Director of National Intelligence; Stephen Hadley, national security advisor to President George W. Bush; former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel, who was secretary of defense in the Obama administration; and retired General Douglas Lute, deputy national security adviser for Iraq and Afghanistan under Bush and for Afghanistan and Pakistan under Obama. Slotkin, born and raised in Michigan, spent 15 years with the CIA and in subsequent national security positions at the White House and Pentagon, before moving back to run for Congress last year. She has both the backing of a wealthy family—her grandfather founded Hygrade Foods—and the support of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which was seeking a candidate with her right-wing credentials for the 8th District. She now has the stamp of approval of the military-intelligence apparatus. The plaudits for Slotkin from men steeped to their elbows in innocent blood should be read as a criminal indictment of this Democratic candidate, one of nearly three dozen Democrats with extensive military-intelligence backgrounds running in competitive congressional districts in the November 6 election.
  5. https://thinkprogress.org/donald-trump-169-million-ice-immigrant-detention-government-programs-fema-f0fcc83c10f7/ Trump used $169 million from other programs to pay for ICE immigrant detention The total is over $200 million if you include transfers from within ICE. Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) released a budget document this week showing President Donald Trump’s administration took $9.8 million out of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) response and recovery budget to pay for immigrant detention centers. That $9.8 million was apparently just a fraction of the funds Trump diverted to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in order to lock up migrants; NBC News reported Thursday that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) transferred a total of $169 million to ICE from other agencies. In addition, DHS redirected $33 million of ICE funding to immigrant detention, marking over $200 million that was diverted to the agency by the Trump administration for the purpose of confining migrants.

Maduro’s leftist government sold a 9.9 percent stake in the low-cost Sinovensa joint venture, where China National Petroleum Corporation has a 40 percent share, to China, it said in a statement. The statement also said China and Venezuela had signed a “memorandum for cooperation in Ayacucho bloc 6,” located in Venezuela’s vast oil-rich Orinoco Belt, without elaborating. China will drill 300 wells in Ayacucho and extend $184 million in financing for the joint oil venture Petrozumano, the statement added. A source at PDVSA, who asked to remain anonymous because he is not allowed to speak to media, said oil services and procurement at Sinovensa would be handled by Chinese companies. It was unclear what China, which has ploughed more than $50 billion into Venezuelathrough oil-for-loan agreements, was giving in return.

"Today, we’re expanding fact-checking for photos and videos to all of our 27 partners in 17 countries around the world (and are regularly on-boarding new fact-checking partners)," product manager Antonia Woodford said in a statement. "We know that people want to see accurate information on Facebook, so for the last two years, we've made fighting misinformation a priority," she said. "This will help us identify and take action against more types of misinformation, faster." Facebook had previously tested the video and image fact-checking video function in France with the AFP news agency. The company said that misleading videos and photos will receive a label after being checked with visual verification techniques, like reverse image searching. Facebook also promised to take additional steps to remove posts determined untrue from its site.
  8. https://www.rt.com/news/438498-germany-anti-islam-book-bestseller/ Anti-Islam book becomes German bestseller less than two weeks after release A new book highly critical of Islam and Muslims has been flying off the shelves in Germany to become a non-fiction bestseller. Mainstream media panned it for a simplistic approach to the religion. The controversial book titled “Hostile Takeover: How Islam Impedes Progress and Threatens Society” reached the number one spot on Der Spiegel’s non-fiction list after being on the market for less than a fortnight. It’s a critique of Islam as a religion, which the author sees as detrimental to people sharing it, based on a literal reading of the Koran. Written by one-time SPD politician and former member of the executive board of the Bundesbank, Thilo Sarrazin, the work comes eight years after Sarrazin’s previous take on Muslims titled “Germany Abolishes Itself”. Focusing on what he called a failure of multiculturalism policies, that book accused Arab and Turkish immigrants of “dumbing down” the German society, and shifted 1.5 million copies. Speaking ahead of the release of his latest work last month, Sarrazin proclaimed that “everything has been worse than I predicted eight years ago.” The release of “Hostile Takeover” comes during a period of heightened tensions in Germany, with much public attention focused crimes committed by immigrants. It was started by the murder of a man in the city of Chemnitz in August, which triggered massive anti-immigration protests in parts of the country with violent clashes erupting between left and right-wing demonstrators.
  9. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/reports-of-widespread-voter-suppression-in-new-york-state-democratic-primary/ar-BBNit5y Reports of Widespread Voter Suppression in New York State Democratic Primary On the day New York State Democrats select their party’s standard-bearers for the upcoming midterm elections, voters are reporting numerous forms of procedural roadblocks, incorrect voting information and disenfranchisement that many suggest rise to the level of voter suppression. In a series of tweets beginning mid-morning on Thursday, New York Magazine author Rebecca Traister detailed her own purge from Democratic Party voter rolls–despite the fact that she’s voted from the same address for the past four years. Traister noted that she wasn’t the only one experiencing such issues: Traister’s thread continued–and taking stock of the same thing happening to a friend of hers. She wrote, “Also! My next door neighbor, registered for years as a Dem, an RHA activist, extremely politically engaged, especially in local and state elections this season, is also not on the rolls at our polling place. She’s on her way to get a court order as we speak.” Soon, other New York State voters began chiming in with similar stories. Lydia Polgreen, editor-in-chief of HuffPost and a former director at the New York Times, said she had her information scrubbed from the Democratic Party’s voter rolls as well.
  10. https://www.rt.com/news/438501-sweden-palestinian-deportation-israel/ Swedish court outrages pro-Jewish groups by nixing deportation of Palestinian arsonist Sweden’s court decision to overturn the expulsion of a Palestinian convicted of firebombing a local Synagogue has provoked a fierce reaction from Israel and pro-Jewish groups that called it a legitimization of anti-Semitism. The Court of Appeals for Western Sweden has overruled another court’s decision concerning a deportation of a Palestinian man, who was earlier convicted of staging an arson attack on a synagogue in the city of Gothenburg. The man was sentenced to two years and prison and expulsion over what was classified as a hate crime, the Swedish media reported. While upholding the prison sentence, the court of appeals still said that, since the perpetrator could be “perceived as a threat to other Jews” and Israel “might have an interest in the matter,”Sweden “cannot secure the man’s fundamental human rights” in case of his deportation to Palestine. The convicted Palestinian has been previously granted asylum in the Nordic country. The decision immediately provoked angry response from some Israeli officials. The court “has shown blatant ignorance regarding Israel’s independent Judiciary that has gained international reputation,” Ilan Ben-Dov, Israel’s ambassador to Sweden said in a Facebook post as he maintained that “Israel is a democratic country, based on Rule of Law.” The envoy slammed the court ruling by calling it a “highly prejudicial and politicized verdict,” which “excuses, and therefore legitimizes, the actions of a violent Anti-Semite as acceptable political criticism.” Israel's Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon also lambasted the court’s decision by saying that this “shameful” verdict “gives legitimacy to violent anti-Semitism and defames the State of Israel.”
  11. https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2018/09/14/tumw-s14.html Washington state strikes continue as Tumwater teachers defy back-to-work order Teachers in the small town of Tumwater, Washington voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to continue striking in defiance of a back-to-work order issued earlier in the day by Thurston County Superior Court Judge Chris Lanese. According to teachers, the walkout, which began September 1, will continue despite threats to impose sanctions on them. Tumwater union officials reported that after “intense debate” during a two-and-a-half hour mass meeting members voted “emphatically” to defy the order. This courageous action by the 400 teachers, just south of the state capital of Olympia, came after the judge hypocritically sided with the school district’s claims that the continuation of the strike would do “substantial harm to students.” In fact, teachers in Tumwater and across the state are fighting not just for themselves but for their students who are suffering from the effects of decades of budget cuts and chronic underfunding. Conditions have gotten so bad that the state supreme court ruled that the state politicians in Olympia violated their constitutional duty to provide quality education to the state’s 1.1 million students. Striking teachers (Source: Tumwater Education Association) “Sometimes what we need to do is stand up for something we don’t believe is right and, in this case, we don't believe that’s right,” teacher Doug Peltier told KOMO News. “So that’s why we’re out here.” “I am a paraeducator, not a teacher,” a Tumwater paraeducator who requested anonymity told the World Socialist Web Site Teacher Newsletter. “But, I am out in support of teachers because that is my job, supporting teachers and students.” Tumwater district officials threatened to seek massive fines against the teachers if they did not surrender. “If the teachers do not report to work, the district will be forced to take the necessary steps the judge outlined in court to seek relief,” the district said in a news release.
  12. https://www.counterpunch.org/2018/09/14/obamas-imperial-presidency/ Obama’s Imperial Presidency Could Donald Trump already be the worst of all American presidents? In less than two years his record on the world scene has been frightening enough: U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Accords, scuttling of the Iran nuclear treaty, moving the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, unjustifiably punitive sanctions against Russia, Iran, and Venezuela, terror bombing of Mosul and other Iraq cities, bombastic threats against friends and enemies alike – not to mention a $54 billion gift to the Pentagon and stepped-up nuclear “modernization”. Hard to imagine much worse. One article of faith among liberals and the corporate media is that Trump’s presidency stands alone as a house or horrors, unprecedented in its fascistic authoritarianism, crazy pronouncements, and ideological blend of xenophobia, racism, sexism, and sheer extremism. Those in the “resistance” know that pretty much any alternative (Bill Maher, LeBron James) would be far better, though specifics — beyond Trump’s mortal sin of partnering with Putin — are rarely mentioned. But precisely what alternatives? Bernie Sanders? Well, the Democratic National Committee never gave him much chance. Obvious comparisons are Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama, and his competitor, Hillary Clinton. Obama was in charge of U.S. foreign policy for the preceding eight years, so his legacy (with plenty of help from Clinton) might be worth considering. Obama, it turns out, was among the most militaristic White House occupants in American history, taking the imperial presidency to new heights. It has been said that Obama was the only president whose administration was enmeshed in multiple wars from beginning to end. His imperial ventures spanned many countries – Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Somalia along with proxy interventions in Yemen and Pakistan. He ordered nearly 100,000 bombs and missiles delivered against defenseless targets, a total greater than that of the more widely-recognized warmonger George W. Bush’s total of 70,000 against five countries. Iraq alone – where U.S. forces were supposed to have been withdrawn – was recipient of 41,000 bombs and missiles along with untold amounts of smaller ordnance. Meanwhile, throughout his presidency Obama conducted hundreds of drone attacks in the Middle East, more than doubling Bush’s total, all run jointly (and covertly) by the CIA and Air Force.

When reached by phone, the Chicago-based investigator confirmed that they needed to speak to the man behind the account in March of this year, but declined to comment on the purpose of their inquiry. Kantbot, who describes himself as a ‘respected artist and ironist, persecuted by the government’ was once interviewed in New York City casting pearls before swine, explaining how Trump would ‘complete the system of German idealism.’ According to Kantbot, the New York-based investigator scrolled through his Twitter feed while she asked him questions. He provided the following emails to Cockburn. They were sent by an official at the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force on March 26:

  17. https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/what-we-do/news-stories/story/afghanistan-kunduz-trauma-center-bombing October 3, 2015 From 2:08 AM until 3:15 AM local time on October 3, 2015, the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) trauma hospital in Kunduz, northern Afghanistan, was hit by a series of aerial bombing raids at approximately 15 minute intervals. The main central hospital building, housing the intensive care unit, emergency rooms, and physiotherapy ward, was repeatedly hit very precisely during each aerial raid, while surrounding buildings were left mostly untouched. “The bombs hit and then we heard the plane circle round,” said Heman Nagarathnam, MSF head of programs in northern Afghanistan. “There was a pause, and then more bombs hit. This happened again and again. When I made it out from the office, the main hospital building was engulfed in flames. Those people that could had moved quickly to the building’s two bunkers to seek safety. But patients who were unable to escape burned to death as they lay in their beds.” The bombing took place despite the fact that MSF had provided the GPS coordinates of the trauma hospital to Coalition and Afghan military and civilian officials as recently as Tuesday, September 29, to avoid that the hospital be hit. As is routine practice for MSF in conflict areas, MSF had communicated the exact location of the hospital to all parties to the conflict. In the aftermath of the attack, the MSF team desperately tried to save the lives of wounded colleagues and patients, setting up a makeshift operating theater in an undamaged room. Some of the most critically injured patients were transferred to a hospital in Puli Khumri, a two hour drive away. MSF issued the following statement from Christopher Stokes, MSF General Director: "Under the clear presumption that a war crime has been committed, MSF demands that a full and transparent investigation into the event be conducted by an independent international body. Relying only on an internal investigation by a party to the conflict would be wholly insufficient. "Not a single member of our staff reported any fighting inside the MSF hospital compound prior to the U.S. airstrike on Saturday morning. The hospital was full of MSF staff, patients and their caretakers. It is 12 MSF staff members and 10 patients, including three children, who were killed in the attack. "We reiterate that the main hospital building, where medical personnel were caring for patients, was repeatedly and very precisely hit during each aerial raid, while the rest of the compound was left mostly untouched. We condemn this attack, which constitutes a grave violation of International Humanitarian Law." October 5, 2015 MSF Response to Pentagon Claim That Afghan Forces Called For Kunduz Airstrike: "Today the US government has admitted that it was their airstrike that hit our hospital in Kunduz and killed 22 patients and MSF staff. Their description of the attack keeps changing—from collateral damage, to a tragic incident, to now attempting to pass responsibility to the Afghanistan government. The reality is the US dropped those bombs. The US hit a huge hospital full of wounded patients and MSF staff. The US military remains responsible for the targets it hits, even though it is part of a coalition. There can be no justification for this horrible attack. With such constant discrepancies in the US and Afghan accounts of what happened, the need for a full transparent independent investigation is ever more critical." —Christopher Stokes, General Director, Médecins Sans Frontières October 7, 2015 "Today we announce that we are seeking an investigation into the Kunduz attack by the International Humanitarian Fact-Finding Commission. "This Commission was established in the Additional Protocols of the Geneva Conventions and is the only permanent body set up specifically to investigate violations of international humanitarian law. "We ask signatory States to activate the Commission to establish the truth and to reassert the protected status of hospitals in conflict. "Though this body has existed since 1991, the Commission has not yet been used. It requires one of the 76 signatory States to sponsor an inquiry.Governments up to now have been too polite or afraid to set a precedent. The tool exists and it is time it is activated." -Dr Joanne Liu, MSF International President
  18. https://www.presstv.com/Detail/2018/09/10/573741/Bolton-wants-to-sanction-ICC-judges-who-probe-US-war-crimes Bolton threatens sanctions against ICC judges who probe US war crimes White House National Security Adviser John Bolton has threatened sanctions against International Criminal Court (ICC) judges who plan to probe alleged war crimes committed by Americans in Afghanistan, saying it constitutes an assault on US sovereignty. Bolton on Monday branded the ICC in The Hague "outright dangerous" in an attempt to pressure the court which is planning to investigate the alleged US war crimes. "The United States will use any means necessary to protect our citizens and those of our allies from unjust prosecution by this illegitimate court," Bolton told members of the conservative Federalist Society gathered at a Washington, DC, hotel. He argued the court poses a threat to US sovereignty. "In theory, the ICC holds perpetrators of the most egregious atrocities accountable for their crimes, provides justice to the victims, and deters future abuses," Bolton said. "In practice, however, the court has been ineffective, unaccountable, and indeed, outright dangerous," he said. The chief prosecutor of the ICC has called for a formal investigation into war crimes in Afghanistan following the US-led invasion of the country in 2001. "Following a meticulous preliminary examination of the situation, I have come to the conclusion that all legal criteria required to commence an investigation have been met", said Fatou Bensouda in a statement last year. "There is a reasonable basis to believe that war crimes and crimes against humanity have been committed," Bensouda added. She said US forces and CIA agents might have committed war crimes by torturing detainees in Afghanistan under a system of approved torture techniques, which included simulated drowning. Human Rights Watch has welcomed the possibility of holding perpetrators to account for what it called horrendous human rights abuses against Afghans. The United States -- under Republican George W. Bush’s presidency -- and its allies invaded Afghanistan on October 7, 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban regime from power, but after more than one and a half decades, the foreign troops are still deployed to the country. After becoming president in January 2009, President Barack Obama, a Democrat, vowed to end the Afghan war -- one of the longest conflicts in US history – but he failed to keep his promise. Trump, who has spoken against the Afghan war, has dubbed the 2001 invasion and following occupation of Afghanistan as "Obama's war." But Trump has also announced to deploy thousands of more troops to the war-torn country. Trump has said that his views have changed since entering the White House and that he would continue the military intervention “as long as we see determination and progress” in Afghanistan.

A federal appeals court on Tuesday shot down a lawsuit filed by protesters Henry Brousseau, Kashiya Nwanguma and Molly Shah, who say they were aggressively ejected from a rally in Louisville, Kentucky in March 2016. Judges David McKeague and Richard Griffin cited a 2015 ruling in which an anti-Muslim protest was constitutionally protected. They argued in an opinion that Trump did not actually call for violence. "In the ears of some supporters, Trump’s words may have had a tendency to elicit a physical response, in the event a disruptive protester refused to leave, but they did not specifically advocate such a response," it read. "As to how the offensive words were said, we know, most relevantly, by plaintiffs’ own allegations, that the words were accompanied by the admonition, 'don’t hurt ’em.' That this undercuts the alleged violence-inciting sense of Trump’s words can hardly be denied."
