The Fate of Kum Hui and Un Hui - This one begins right after Korea is split following WWII. A man hides in a cave from the rain. He comes across another very ill man with twins who dies. The man takes the twins to get medical help. He is told by the South Koreans that "liberation does not mean free medical care" so he heads North. The twins are split and the one in the North becomes better and works as cheerleader type person for the workers (this was called "speed campaign" at the time) while the one in the South becomes a singer in a brothel/ cabaret type establishment. The Speed campaign scenes serve as musical interludes from the drama sections. She is beaten by her pimp and then ran over by a car leaving her in poverty and permanently in crutches. This film is very unsubtle propaganda as you can imagine. One interesting aspect is that this is the earliest instance I can recall of post-WWII/ Park Chung-hee era South Korea being depicted in Northern cinema. South Korea is depicted as full of shantytowns and homeless people wandering through the streets. South Korea would also be portrayed later in the Unsung Heroes (1978) film series and the Nation and Destiny (1990s) film series (Japan, Germany, UK, Canada and a few others are also depicted in this series). Larry Allen Abshier is also visible for literally a brief couple seconds at the end of this film as a border guard at the DMZ.

The Ocean - Three classmates who graduated from the USSR Naval Academy rejoin years later when in the Northern Fleet. The fate of each of them has developed in its own way. One of them is the captain of the ship; the other two are experiencing personal problems. Circumstances compel each of them to behave differently. Often, they do not reveal their best. This film questions the true value of human relationships and our responsibility to our fellow men. The most moving scene is where the main character says "the meaning of life is a military secret" when delivering a message of hope to his wife.

At Home Among Strangers, A Stranger Among His Own - Another great red western. The Reds and Whites are fighting. In order to get aid from the League of Nations and feed their poor the Reds are sending in a gold shipment. Of course, it is robbed by the Whites. Comrade Shilov is blamed because his brother was a traitor who fought for the Tsarists. Shilov goes undercover and infiltrates the enemy camp to find the gold and clear his name. This movie is very good and clearly influenced by the spaghetti westerns. Yuri Bogatyryov shines as Shilov and the nice soundtrack is done by Artmeyev who also scored for Solaris and Stalker. This is a very good film about the greed caused by gold and the innocent clearing his name. Some of the film is in color and some is in B&W but this isn't for an artistic reason but just that they were low on color film stock. Very great western and I recommend it. Kirk Cameron responded to the film's negative reviews by pleading to his fans on his Facebook page: "Help me storm the gates of Rotten Tomatoes. All of you who love Saving Christmas - go rate it at Rotten Tomatoes right now and send the message to all the critics that WE decide what movies we want our families to see. If 2,000 of you (out of almost 2 million on this page) take a minute to rate Saving Christmas, it will give the film a huge boost and more will see it as a result! Thank you for all your help and support in putting the joy of Christ back in Christmas!" This actually resulted in a severe backlash against the film, in which Internet users traveled to the Rotten Tomatoes page and condemned the film. Cameron later blamed this action on "haters and atheists".

It seems so stiff and obvious compared to other films made in 1933. "West Side Story"(1961) has aged pretty badly. In the age of the automatic weapon a bunch of guys with switchblades and great synchronized dance moves are just not scary at all.
I'd go as far as to say half the Best Picture winners of the 1930s don't hold up. "You Can't Take It With You" has a nice social message but from a technical and acting standpoint it pales in comparison to Robin Hood and Grand Illusion. Emile Zola, Great Zigfield (Modern Times wasn't even nominated.
Academy must have really had something against silent pictures) and Cavalcade likewise aren't even close to Best Pictures of their years.

House of Cards Season 6: The King is dead, long live the Queen!
The sixth and final season of House of Cards, inspired by the 1990 British BBC miniseries (based on the novel by Michael Dobbs), is now streaming on Netflix.
House of Cards is set in Washington, D.C. Its first five seasons center on Congressman Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey), a Democratic Party politician, who, with the help of his scheming wife Claire (Robin Wright), lies, manipulates and kills his way into the White House.
At its most hard-hitting, the series exposed the mendacity and corruption endemic to the American political system, the overwhelming influence and power of big business in Washington, the suppression of political opposition, the use of frame-ups and murder to get rid of “troublesome” journalists and the cold-blooded willingness of the American government to invent “terrorist attacks” for its own criminal purposes.
In the year and a half that has passed since the release of Season 5 in May 2017, however, a good many things have occurred both in the world at large and in the more immediate confines of the series itself. It’s impossible, first of all, to seriously discuss the drama and development of the new season without referring to the #MeToo campaign and the fate of Kevin Spacey, who starred in the initial 65 episodes of the series, first streamed in February 2013.

I have to agree with you guys on Rooney. He can be irritating in some of those movies. I will always love Girl Crazy though. More so because of the Gershwin score than because of Rooney, though Rooney isn't particularly annoying in that one.

I came across a few clips of a North Korean film titled Nameless Heroes, or Unsung Heroes on YouTube. It was made in 1978 featuring 4 American defectors. The 2 I remember seeing were Charles Jenkins who played Dr. Kelton, the mastermind behind the Korean War, and Joe Dresnok, who played Authur, a brutal POW camp commander. I would like to see TCM get their hands on this film, because it will be probably be watched by more people in America than any other movie ever shown on TCM.

Yeah, they should show "From 5 PM to 5 AM" which stars the notorious James Joseph Dresnok. An even better Korean War flick than "Unsung Heroes."
