I really disliked Rosemary's Baby, because 1) I don't really like movies like this and 2) I thought it was boring; but I loved the lady who gets a little too enthusiastic and yells "HAIL SATAN" really loudly.
I also love the lady in The Birds who chastises Tippi Hedren in the diner for bringing the birds to Bodega Bay.
I thought I was the only one who didn't care for ROSEMARY'S BABY. I know many consider it a classic, but it just didn't do anything for me.
I do love THE BIRDS, and yes that lady who calls Tippi 'evil' was certainly something else.

Daresay Bogart is actually sexy in 721. He lost that quality in his subsequent gangster roles.
Yes, I have to admit he does look so fine in that pic.
Bogart, to me anyway, was never the hot stud that some of his other contemporaries were, but he still had that 'coolness' factor about him that made him hard to resist.

I don't think Rooney's goal was to be a serious actor. His goal was to entertain.
Guys like Rooney weren't trying to win Academy Awards, they were trying to please audiences. If they were recognized by peers, it was icing on the cake.
You'll probably right about that.
As far as serious actors go, I seldom hear anyone mention Rooney in the company of actors I've already mentioned. But he does still have quite a fan base who appreciate him as Andy Hardy, and love the many films he made with Judy Garland.

I read somewhere that Laurence Olivier was also a fan of Mickey Rooney. Not sure if that's true or not, but it's interesting that so many in the biz were impressed by Rooney's talents. He was definitely a unique lifelong performer.
I'll grant you that Rooney certainly had quite a lengthy career.
And yes even though there are a few films where he demonstrated he could truly act (like NATIONAL VELVET and BOYS TOWN), to me he never quite achieved the iconic status that his peers like Grant and Olivier, or Tracy, Bogart, Cagney, etc. managed to achieve.

In my view the snubbed Cary fir at least noms for THE AWFUL TRUTH\,m BRINGING UP BABY, HIS GIRL FRIDAY & ARSENIC & OLD LACE & I know who was officially nominated those yrs & who woulda had to be bumped
When ever someone asked him who's the best in the biz without pause he'd say MICKEY ROONEY
Afraid I'd have to disagree with Cary on that one. But to each their own.

Yeah, and besides the fact that near the end of this flick, the histrionics she displays next to that window are REALLY so over the top that it always leads to confusion as to if she purposely leaps though it to commit suicide or just lost her balance while displaying said histrionics.
(...ya know, there's ALWAYS this debate about that whenever this movie is discussed around here)
I wouldn't put it past her if she did knowingly and intentionally fell out that window, knowing that with her gone, there was no way Bogey would ever be able to clear himself at all. She was spiteful enough at that point to screw him to the very end.
On the other hand, she didn't quite strike me as the kind of woman to cut off her nose to spite her face, as they say.
I like that we don't know one way or the other. It does bring up some quite interesting discussions on the subject as you say.

I always thought Cary was perfect in ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, even though it wasn't his favorite performance.
Jack Benny would have been too subtle for the role. I think the part of Mortimer Brewster called for it being over-the-top, especially with the dark humor going on in the film.
