    You think I believe we're still living in the 1950's simply because I think an Oscar should be  earned rather than given as a trophy participation trophy.  I find that comment ridiculous beyond belief, not to mention narrow-minded.  I know this is 2020, not 1920, just because I don't agree with you on this does not mean I am not aware of what goes on today.

    And a few opinions from a few carefully selected members doesn't prove that the Academy deliberately shun African Americans or women.

    There have been more Oscar wins and nominations for African Americans since the 21st century began than from the previous century. There has been quite a lot of progress for them since the Academy Awards started.  Can there be more progress? Of course there can be. But catering to a certain group of individuals simply for the sake of making them happy regardless of the quality of the performance or production, cheapens the meaning of the award.

    I am done debating this.

    I'm all for more nominations for women and minorities.....but again I say it should be based on their talent, not on their gender or race.

    When you start giving nominations to appease a certain group (even if the performances or direction are mediocre), then the awards become meaningless.

    The Academy is under no obligation to hand out nominations based on affirmative action.

    I admit I watch the Oscars no matter what, it's become a tradition to me,  but I swear some of the speeches were really long-winded (cough, cough, sorry Joaquin),

    As I said it another thread, it got tedious after awhile, first the digs from Chris Rock about the lack of diversity in the nominees this year in the acting awards this year (never mind the fact that there were 2 African American Supporting Awards last year) and the ENDLESS subtle patroninzing from the female presenters about no female nominations in the directing category.

    I am sorry now I didn't just skip the whole show....I can easily find out who won on the Internet.

     

    Kirk Douglas Film Discussion Thread

    SEVEN DAYS IN MAY is a really great film. You have such acting titans as Kirk, Burt Lancaster and Fredric March, not to mention great supporting actors such as Edmond O'Brien, Martin Balsam and George Macready, to help make this film such an enjoyable acting experience.

    I also appreciate how Jiggs (Kirk's character) admits he actually agrees with General Scott (Lancaster) about the futility of signing a bomb dismemberment pact with the Soviets, but clearly he does NOT approve of the General's methods to try and prevent it.

    Great movie all around.
