  1. I know some feel the humor in THE SEARCHERS was misplaced.....but I have to confess I always laugh when Ethan calls Martin "Jughead".

I actually don't mind the humor. I think it helps balance with the dark tone of the film. But that's me.

  2. I love RIO BRAVO as well, the interaction between Wayne and Dean Martin, as well as Wayne with Walter Brennan and Ricky Nelson, are all gems to behold.

I also have to give a shout out for SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON. Even if one disagrees with Nathan's philosophy "Never apologize, it's a sign of weakness", he's still very much likable and someone you'd want to fight with in a battle.

Image result for paths of glory images

I had spoken about my favorite Detective Story on the other thread, now I will discuss my second favorite:

    Paths Of Glory (1957)

This is my favorite war film ever. It is about two WWI French generals (Adolphe Menjou and George Macready) who order a combat officer (Douglas) to launch a near impossible attack with a battle weary company of soldiers. When the attack fails, the generals order that 3 of the soldiers are tried for cowardice.

Everything clicks in this one, Stanley Kubrick's direction brings us right into the muddy trenches and cavernous courtrooms. Douglas gives one of his greatest performances as the colonel who defends his men in court. His final explosive scene with Menjou is one of his most memorable moments on film. Ralph Meeker, Timothy Carey and Joseph Turkel all turn in fine work as the condemned men, each is given a moment to shine in individual scenes. There is also a haunting final scene, the entire company of soldiers are treated to  a show which features a sweet German girl ( the Germans were the enemy in WWI). The men are initially hostile to her,  but she sings a German folk song through her tears, which touches the men who suddenly realize that she is a human being, not their enemy.

Love this movie. Kirk definitely turns one of his finest performances as the officer who tries in vain to save the lives of those poor 3 soldiers 'chosen' to die to make an example of.

I still contend that Macready and Menjou's characters should have been the ones to be shot! It was through their decisions (to say nothing for their thirst for glory) that the mission turned out to be such a disaster. They were at fault, not the condemned men. Both actors play their parts brilliantly.

And of course I love Kirk telling off Menjou near the end of the film.

I agree that Wayne Morris is more often than not ignored, but he also contributes to making this film the classic it is and should not go unacknowledged.  It's so sweet to know what a brave man he was in times of war in the real world.

    I like JOHN WAYNE movies.
STAGECOACH (1939) was just on TCM.   Thumbup
It's followed by TRUE GRIT (1969) at 9:45 est.

Man I love me some JOHN WAYNE movies.  I think my favorite is THE SHOOTIST (1976) which breaks my heart.  It also has LAUREN BACALL and RON HOWARD

THE SHOOTIST is a great movie, and a terrific swan song for Wayne, to end his career on a high note before his death.

My personal favorite performance of his is Ethan Edwards in THE SEARCHERS.  He really should have won his Oscar for that movie instead of TRUE GRIT (as much as I like that film I might add).

I agree with everything you say in your post except for the bit about Kirk Douglas.  I really think they gave Kirk short shrift, he deserved more than 1 second at the end of the memorial tribute.  I think they could have and should have had a special tribute just for him. It wouldn't have to be long, 2 minutes or so, showing clips from the many famous and acclaimed movies he was in.  To just stick him on at the end, along with a whole lot of people I've never heard of (although I'm sure they were all very worthy), as though he didn't occupy a special place in Hollywood film history, seemed misguided at best, and certainly unfair.

You're right, Kirk deserved a longer tribute than just a few seconds.

But I'm just glad that he was included in the tributes at all. Better than nothing.

If I recall Mickey Rooney didn't get that much of a tribute either the year he passed on, and he was the biggest box-office draw in the 30's. That really surprised me.

Yeah, it's a shame that their only pairing turned out to be a DUD!

I feel the same way about Dustin Hoffman and Warren Beatty in ISHTAR.

Such star power, yet the film IMO really stunk to high heaven.

I know Hoffman had a small part as Mumbles in DICK TRACY, but there were maybe only 2 or 3 scenes between him and Beatty in there.

Films made by female film directors that could have been nominated for Best Picture and/or Best Director:

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

    Booksmart

    The Farewell

    Fast Color

    Honey Boy

Little Women (Nominated for Best Picture but Greta Gerwig got individually snubbed again.)

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

    Queen & Slim

Like I said, maybe the members of the Academy just weren't that impressed by these films, even if the audiences were.

I am not against seeing more female directors getting their due but only if the film merits it, not simply because they are a woman.

Well! In a year where the guy who directed Old School got a nomination for directing a movie about a Batman villain that played rather fast and loose in dealing with themes about mental health, then yeah, I could see why folks would be a tad tired and fed up about certain decisions in certain categories.

So the answer is to nominate someone based on their race/gender rather than on their talent? I don't go for that.

Could be the Academy members just weren't wowed by what was offered by female filmmakers or from the African American filmmakers.  Doesn't mean they're racist or sexist.

I mean wasn't it just last year that we had 2 African Americans winning in the supporting acting awards? Not to mention in the early 2000's you had Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx and Forest Whittaker winning Best Actor all within a space of each other.

Lack of diversity my foot. If anything the nominations and victories for minorities have doubled from the 20th century.

  9. Joaquin, great actor, but yes he did ramble on and on and on and on....and on and on....

I have no idea what he was trying to get at with that speech.

Haven't seen Parasite so I can't comment on it's merit.

Loved Laura Dern's win, she is one classy lady, and always  struck me as very down to earth.

And congrats to Renee Zellweger for her win on Judy.

I know, very predictable show at least up until Parasite took the top honor. Could have done with out the moaning and groaning about the lack of diversity and lack of female nominations for Best Director without a doubt.

Nice that they were able to fit in Kirk Douglas during the tributes.

  10. I remember seeing AMOS once a long time ago....I suppose it was the closest that Kirk came to playing Randal MacMurphy (though with a different name). I remember despising Elizabeth's nurse as well (she almost made the real deal Nurse Ratched look like a saint.....ALMOST that is).  Great acting from both of them, especially from Liz, no trace of Samantha Stevens in here.

I quite enjoy THERE WAS A CROOKED MAN, interesting to see Kirk and Henry Fonda in the same movie together. Also loved the ending as well. Kirk plays a likable heel, until you realize what his real intentions are and how far he will go to get what he wants.

THE WAR WAGON is really quite a fun film, and I love the interplay between Kirk and John Wayne.

Also like THE DEVIL'S DISCIPLE, but then I always liked any movie that had Kirk and Burt costarring together.
