  1. I know Stephen King's biggest issue with Kubrick's THE SHINING was it wasn't all that faithful to King's book. I loved the book but I still loved Kubrick's take on it. The blood pouring out of the elevator, the rotting old woman from the bathtub, the twins appearing slaughtered down the hallway, that's the stuff of nightmares. If you want to talk about a really abominable adaptation of one of King's novels, I have to go with the 1989 version of PET SEMETERY. That film was beyond atrocious (haven't seen the remake as of yet). I'm in the minority when it comes to THE GODFATHER PART III, while it's not the classic the first two GODFATHER films were, it's still very much watchable and it does bring the character of Michael Corleone to full circle.
  2. Love me some Vivien! Both movies so seldom get shown, at least when compared with GONE WITH THE WIND or A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE (don't get me wrong I love both movies, but a little more Vivien in other movies is always welcomed by me).
  3. Actually you might be surprised how many people in today's world actually do base their lives on that line of reasoning, however selfish and wrong it sounds.
  4. I enjoy FULL METAL JACKET and consider A CLOCKWORK ORANGE Kubrick at his very best, but I can understand why a lot of people would not want to see either film (especially CLOCKWORK ORANGE). I know Gene Kelly hated A CLOCKWORK ORANGE because he felt that (bit of a spoiler here) Alex **** a tied up woman and beating up a helpless old man while he was crooning out SINGIN' IN THE RAIN forever tainted Kelly's beloved song.
  5. I never, EVER watch any of my favorite movies on commercial stations like TBS, TNT and so fourth because I know they are going to get edited to bits. Thank goodness for DVDs and Blu-Rays.
  6. I really like Scorsese, but I have yet to see MEAN STREETS and have no desire to. HEARTBREAK RIDGE is just about the only Clint Eastwood film I haven't seen....is it any good? As I mentioned in another thread, I haven't seen THE SISTERS with Bette Davis and Errol Flynn, but all the talk in there has got me riled up wanting to check it out.
  7. Burke was totally believable as the younger Rocky. There's a strong resemblance between him and Cagney, and he even nailed Cagney's Rocky-like mannerisms to a T.
  8. Wayne was excellent in THE SHOOTIST as well, I won't deny that. But I still feel Ethan Edwards in THE SEARCHERS was his best role. He did bring a human side to Ethan, despite the character's hatred and bigotry. Henry Fonda was excellent in ON GOLDEN POND, but I personally think he should have won for THE GRAPES OF WRATH, one of the best movies of all time, I think we can agree on that at least.
  9. I can still like and respect Mel Gibson and Russell Crowe as actors, while feeling they are both a couple of hot-headed numbskulls in real life. I respect Roman Polanski as a filmmaker, but I also still feel he should have faced the music for what he did to that teenage girl back in the 70's instead of running off. Kevin Spacey is a heck of an actor but he is a total scumbag off-screen. I feel one can respect and admire one as an artist but can also acknowledge that artist's very questionable behavior.
  10. I have to agree with Mickey Rooney (though I feel he was a lot more restrained and subtle in BILL, THE BLACK STALLION and NATIONAL VELVET (though he still had a couple of hammy moments, but for the most part he played the part of Mi Taylor naturally). I love Jack Nicholson but I have to admit he can be hammy in his over-the-top roles (such as BATMAN and THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK), but I enjoy them all the same. Don't think I agree with his being hammy in THE SHINING (he was terrifying in there IMO) or THE DEPARTED (over-the-top, sure but not hammy). Al Pacino could also be hammy when he wanted to be....for me it either works or it doesn't. I think it works in THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE, because the part called for him to be hamming it up. Didn't care for his out-of-control style in SCARFACE very much though (maybe because I'm a bigger fan of the Paul Muni version) or in DICK TRACY (which I feel he was trying to outdo Jack's Joker in BATMAN in the campy department).
  11. A film about Clara Bow certainly would be interesting to see. Don't know how I feel about Emma Stone playing the part though. But I'd be willing to give a movie about Clara a chance.
  12. Nah, IMO THE SEARCHERS was Ford's masterpiece. Not that THE GRAPES OF WRATH and HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY weren't great films, they are. But THE SEARCHERS to me was where Ford really hit it out of the ball park and I feel that John Wayne turned in his best performance ever.
