Mitchum played one heck of a villain in both THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER and CAPE FEAR. He was so convincing as the embodiment of pure evil.
However, he played the hero/anti-hero with equal credibility. So I say that whether he's playing a good guy or a bad guy, Robert Mitchum was always at the top of his game.

Even though he didn't die in it, Montgomery Cliff was seriously injured and disfigured in that car accident during the making of RAINTREE COUNTRY. He still turned in fine performances but in real life I don't think he was ever quite the same after losing his dashing good looks.

I got the DVD some time ago, good thing too, because as you pointed out, it's not on TV a whole lot.

Everybody seems to prefer the Fredric March version of DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, but I have to confess I like the Spencer Tracy film a whole lot more.
And most folks also seem to loathe PAINT YOUR WAGON. Have to admit it is weird seeing tough guys Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood burst into song, but I actually enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I actually think Clint doesn't have that bad of a voice either.
Don't worry John, I like EYES WIDE SHUT too, even though the majority opinion seems to be that it's Kubrick's worst film.

Great film, and much better than the remake.
The newer film was decent enough, but Walter Matthau is a tough act to follow (though Denzel Washington was good but I liked Matthau better in here).
Plus Robert Shaw made a much better villain than John Travolta (not that Travolta isn't capable of playing a good villain).

(POSSIBLE SPOILERS):
Debbie was still his kin (daughter or niece, whatever) and when all is said and done he couldn't really bring himself to do her in no matter how much he convinced himself he'd be doing her a favor since she was so deeply into the Indians' way of life by this time.
I agree that Ethan still hasn't shaken loose of his racism. He's still a man with too much bitterness in hatred in himself, and perhaps that's why he chooses to go away because he knows he's not going to change and that Martin and the others would not accept his refusal to give up his bigotry.

I love THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION (personally, it's my choice for the Best Picture of 1994), but my all time favorite prison film will always be COOL HAND LUKE.

I like Harrison Ford, but I like the Duke a whole lot better.
Still James Cagney IMO tops them both as my favorite actor in general.

I bought the movie on DVD because I finally wanted to see what all the hoopla was all about. And while it wouldn't be what I would have chosen to be THE greatest movie of all time, it is a damn fine film for sure.
Charles Foster Kane is neither saint, nor villain really, but a deeply flawed human being. Like the rest of us.
Orson Welles certainly succeeded in making a classic film. I am aware a lot of folks didn't appreciate KANE when it came out in 1941, but today quite a lot of viewers (myself included) believe this is indeed the crowning achievement of his career.
I'm only sorry I didn't get to see it much sooner than I did. But I couldn't wait until it came on TCM again.
And at last I finally understand what 'Rosebud' means!

I love BRINGING UP BABY but can hardly stand WHAT'S UP DOC?
I guess a big part of the reason is because I'm a much bigger fan of Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant than I am of Barbra Streisand and Ryan O'Neal.
Hepburn and Grant just captured a hilarious quality and chemistry in their shenanigans in BABY that I feel Streisand and O'Neal badly lacked in their film.
Sorry to all the WHAT'S UP DOC? fans, but IMHO BABY beats it by a long shot in the laugh out loud department.

I thought at times Andy's smile in A FACE IN THE CROWD, could be a bit on the maniacal side, though I do agree that Anthony had a pleasant enough smile.

On the old IMBD boards, the one for THREE MEN AND A BABY, that's all the posters wanted to talk about, the 'ghost', not the movie, script, director, any of the actors. It was 'the ghost' who got the most interest.

I really enjoy both FRANKENSTEIN and BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, that I constantly change my mind which one is better.
Did miss Baron Frankenstein in the sequel, though I understand the actor died a year or two earlier before BRIDE came out.
