I actually never even heard of this 2016 film, but I looked it up and it really was a bomb. I have mixed feelings about this because this film failing is - according to your post - what caused Fox to sell out to Disney. And anything that enlarges or helps Disney I am definitely against.

I enjoyed the 1996 INDEPENDENCE DAY but loathe the sequel. I especially hated it when (SPOILER ALERT):

Whitmore (Bill Pullman) gets killed off midway through the movie. Vivica Fox's character is also wiped out.

Looks like Will Smith made the right call by not returning for the sequel.

Yeah, well maybe, but this month without Noir Alley takes a toll on the psyche.

    I agree, it totally stinks.

I admit I only throw my 2 cents in here whenever there's a particular film noir that I'm interested in, but the discussions are always fascinating.

  4. A beautiful lady and a fine actress.

I concur, I can't think of a film that she starred in that I didn't like (though maybe I have a short memory).

She was so lovely as the beautiful Esmerelda in THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, I think that's probably my favorite role of hers. Also loved her films with John Wayne and I enjoyed her in the original PARENT TRAP very much so.

I'm also amused by the name of the character "Tim" who is a teacher at the school run by REVERAND TRASK. Like, not THADDEUS or BRAMWELL or LEVITICUS?

(In fact, I keep thinking of "they call me...Tim" from MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL.

There was a Bramwell Collins near the end of the series played by Jonathan Frid during the 1841 Parallel Time storyline. Apparently he was tired of the Barnabas role by this time.

  6. Funny thing is, as a child, my first exposure to Joan was watching her on the reruns of DARK SHADOWS, I didn't even know she had a film career until much later on which I saw her opposite Spencer Tracy in the original FATHER OF THE BRIDE.

Since then I've been catching up with a lot of her movies. While she may not have quite the star power or versatility of Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, Olivia de Havilland, Barbara Stanwyck, etc. she did have a certain something that kept you intrigued when watching her.

I am deep in the 1897 storyline and one thing that I am beguiled by is the character of the COLLINWOOD MAID [and love interest for QUENTIN]  "BETH."

    Beth???

    See the source image

I'm sorry, MAGGIE EVANS aside, I thought it was DARK SHADOWS LAW that all FEMALE CHARACTER'S NAMES HAVE THREE SYLLABLES- Julia, Elizabeth, Carolyn, Victoria, etc... (more syllables take up more airtime I guess)

so it just feels a little out of place to have someone named BETH in the mix and not, say, AMARYLLIS or EUSTACIA or CELESTINE or something like that.

    Just...Beth...

And WHY is her last name CHAVEZ? Anyone know that?

Funny thing is, I asked my mom if she named me after the character of Beth from DARK SHADOWS, she admitted she contemplated either naming me that or Elizabeth...she settled on Beth because she didn't want anyone nicknaming me 'Lizzie' (like from Lizzie Borden).

Personally I would have liked to have been named after Elizabeth but hey my name's my name.

    Gloria Grahame SUTS

8 p.m.  The Big Heat (1953).  One of Grahame’s very best.

Definitely one of her better films.

Funny how I only knew her as Ado Annie from OKLAHOMA! for so many years, then I started seeing a lot of her other movies, this one, IN A LONELY PLACE,  SUDDEN FEAR to name a few, and I began to see her in a whole new light.

  9. I find THE V.I.P.S watchable, though certainly not up there with WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINA WOOLF? I admit.

Margaret Rutherford was the best thing about the movie for me, but I have to confess I don't think it was an Oscar worthy performance.

Orson's scenes bore me as well. But Rod Taylor did make good eye candy.

  10. The show was shot live on tape, usually with just one take (something that creator Dan Curtis insisted on ) so that would be different than working on a movie where when you make a mistake you can stop filming and do another take until you get it right.

I think Joan did just fine as Elizabeth and all her other roles on the show. But I agree with Roy that Nancy Barrett was the most versatile actress of the show. She was a great screamer too.

I was struck by the Genie charactor voiced by Robin Williams in Disney's animated ALADDIN that way. I sat in the theater with my mouth open at what was said, thinking, "who is going to know what he's talking about in 20 years?" I generally love Robin Williams, but think he did a huge disservice to the film by going off on contemporary politics.

I can't believe Disney allowed it, ruining the timeless quality of an animated movie. That's why anything made while Walt was alive is "classic", it holds up for generations.

Well in all fairness, I don't think that was a consideration that Robin took when he did his impersonations, he just wanted to entertain his audience and I think he did a brilliant job of it.

I mean even 30 years later, lots of folks still know who Jack Nicholson and Rodney Dangerfield is, and even a select few will recognize his Peter Lorre impersonation.

Comedians can't predict what will and will not be relevant in the distant future, they just want to make their crowds laugh.

  12. IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE and CITIZEN KANE both flopped badly at the box office but are now considered all-time classics through and through.

WONDERFUL LIFE really benefited from this when the tv stations started broadcasting it repeatedly during the holiday season during, what was it the 60's or 70's?

THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION didn't do much business in the theaters but home video helped build its reputation as one of the best prison movies ever made.
