I wouldn't mind seeing the 1951 Fredric March version of DEATH OF A SALESMAN, but that's a film that seems to be out of reach indefinitely for some reason.

1285 I don't know if I've seen. It looks familiar, but I can't quite place it. I know I haven't seen 1288 and 1289.

I think you're right about A FACE IN THE CROWD coming out in 1957, but I'm pretty sure THE RAINMAKER was released in 1955.

My favorites of 1955 are:
1. MISTER ROBERTS
2. THE DESPERATE HOURS
3. REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE
4. THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER
5. MARTY
6. LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME
7. BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK
8. THE RAINMAKER
9. OKLAHOMA!
10. THE VIOLENT MEN
Now, as to whom I would have given the Oscars to, as much as I love MARTY, there was just a lot of strong competition that year.
Best Actor would be a tie for me would be between Henry Fonda in MISTER ROBERTS and Robert Mitchum in THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, though in the end, I guess I would give the edge to Mitchum for being so darn frightening in HUNTER.
Totally agree with the Academy's choice of Jack Lemmon winning Best Supporting Actor for MISTER ROBERTS.
Best Actress I would have given to Katharine Hepburn for SUMMERTIME (I know it's not on my top 10 of favorites but she gave one amazing performance in there, I can't deny there, and it's still a well-made film).
Best Supporting Actress: Natalie Wood in REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE.
Best Picture choice: MISTER ROBERTS

1279 and 1280 I haven't seen. I might have seen 1276, but it's been awhile.
I absolutely adore 1273 (Bette Davis is so great in here). 1277 is watchable to me if only for Robert Mitchum (Rock Hudson just never floated my boat, so to speak).
1278 is definitely not one of my favorites despite the presence of Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones (still can't believe Jones won an Oscar for that film when he turned in far more Oscar worthy performances before and since then).
1275 is memorable for the car chase but that's all I can say for it.
1272 I like to watch when it comes on.

Great movie, with Borgnine turning in a playing-against-type performance as the lonely butcher looking for love (he usually played the nasty big bad guy during this period).

There are quite a few actors who managed to end their distinguished careers on a high note (even if you didn't care for the films themselves). Here are my examples:
Spencer Tracy (GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER)
Fredric March (THE ICEMAN COMETH)
Henry Fonda (ON GOLDEN POND)
John Wayne (THE SHOOTIST)
Oliver Reed (GLADIATOR)
Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe (THE MISFITS)
And then there are others who didn't vanish from the screen with such a great lasting impression, such as Gene Hackman in WELCOME TO MOOSEPORT, Bette Davis in WICKED STEPMOTHER and Joan Crawford in TROG. Great actors all of them, but IMO their final films were not something to brag about.
