WE COULD USE A WARREN OATES TCM DAY, ANYBODY AGREE?
Bethluvsfilms replied to spence's topic in Summer Under the Stars
I loved his turn as the tough-as-nails sergeant in STRIPES, that was my first introduction to him. But I have seen him in so many other films and older tv shows since then, and he was a very fine actor. I agree he was and is far too underappreciated even in this day and age. -

Susan Hayward turns in an Oscar winning performance in I WANT TO LIVE!, but clearly the movie has a bias against the death penalty. Understandable for cinema in those days I suppose. My choice for one tough movie to watch is 1995's DEAD MAN WALKING, a far more balanced film that looks at both sides of the arguments for or against capital punishment. I find this a far more fresh approach than the 'death penalty is cruel' argument that I WANT TO LIVE! was going for. Plus it boasts great performances from Susan Sarandon (who also won an Oscar for her performance) as Sister Helen Prejean and Sean Penn who does a brilliant job of not romanticizing his condemned character. For the record, I am sort of neutral on the issue of capital punishment. I do think in some cases it can be an absolute necessity (Ted Bundy for example) to keep the rest of society safe.

Have you seen these 10 classic films..?
Bethluvsfilms replied to TopBilled's topic in General Discussions
1041, 1047 and 1050 are my personal favorites from the bunch. 1046, while not one of my favorite Brando flicks, still worth a viewing. Not sure what film 1042 is....it doesn't quite look like THE GRAPES OF WRATH (one of my favorite Henry Fonda films) to me, but I could be wrong. -

PAUL NEWMAN OR STEVE McQUEEN AS COOL HAND LUKE?
Bethluvsfilms replied to spence's topic in General Discussions
I can't see anyone but Paul Newman pulling off the character of COOL HAND LUKE (except maybe James Dean who was dead at this point, or Marlon Brando, who wasn't exactly packing them in at the box office around this time). No argument from me that Paul was a far more versatile actor than Steve McQueen. But then I am a bigger Newman fan than I am of McQueen so I guess I am a bit biased here. -

Yes, indeed top-notch performances from Begley and Grahame from a movie that I feel is very much underrated.

Never saw this film, but I think I will check it out. Sounds interesting. But then I am interested in anything Boris Karloff did on film.

What a great actor he was. He was superb in just about everything he did, from CHARIOTS OF FIRE, the 1971 version of MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS, to HAMLET and of course he was chilling as Ash in ALIEN (especially when you learn the truth about his character and his true purpose). May he RIP. He will be missed.

I also like PSYCHO II a lot better than I thought I would. There have been worst sequels. Like PSYCHO III maybe.....if you thought PSYCHO II ended on a disappointing note, PSYCHO III tops it, but I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it. On the other hand, maybe it's inevitable that Norman would revert to his old ways. Real ma or not, she would always have a hold on him, in or out of the grave. The damage had already been done to him long before the events of the original PSYCHO took place.
