  1. I like James Stewart, but  I am, through and through, a much bigger Tom Hanks fan.

I could see Stewart in maybe a watered down SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (one without showing the blood and guts), but it is impossible to see him in Tom's role in PHILADELPHIA (and not just because of the sexuality of the character).

Stewart is capable of taking on roles in dark-toned films (like Hitchcock's VERTIGO) but would he have been believable as a family-orientated hitman in ROAD TO PERDITION like Hanks was? Maybe, maybe not.

I suppose Stewart could have pulled off FORREST GUMP, but then I am not that much of a fan of that film, even with Tom in it.

I don't know if Hanks could have pulled off any of Stewart's roles either, even Mr. Smith, even though Smith does capture a lot of everyday man qualities that Hanks portray in most of his roles.

Hanks and Stewart. while it may appear on the surface have similar acting styles, are actually worlds apart in what roles they were suitable for.

I caught the ending this morning. I love it, I've seen it many times but not all the way through in a few years. My favorite scene doesn't even involve Dracula. It is when the newly undead Lucy (Carol Marsh) who appears very sweet but actually wants to put the bite on her brother (Michael Gough) but becomes a hissing vampire when Van Helsing (Peter Cushing) shows her the crucifix.

    I love that scene too.

    I adore HORROR OF DRACULA.

The majority opinion seems to be that Bela Lugosi is the ultimate Dracula, and while Lugosi certainly made for a creepy vampire, I must say Christopher Lee is more than a match for him.

I love Peter Cushing as Dr. Van Helsing. The final battle between him and Lee's Dracula is exciting.

On Svengoolie tomorrow, June 13, 2020: I'm not a big fan of Hammer,  but this is one of the good ones. Brutal at the start, curiously moving by the finish.

Oh I love the Hammer films. THE CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF, while not my favorite Hammer film, is certainly very much watchable. Although....

First time views may feel frusterated because....(SPOILER ALERT)

The werewolf doesn't turn up until the last 5 or 10 minutes of the film.

I would still recommend to stick with it though.

  4. CHARIOTS OF FIRE gets a lot of flack because it was the movie that dared to beat REDS for Best Picture in 1981/1982, but I personally think it's a great movie.

And of course the film's musical score is legendary. It's almost impossible to NOT think of it when you see a bunch of folks running in a marathon (or even just jogging outside your home).

    13.jpg

    10 a.m.  Popeye: Child Psykolojiky (1941).

    gungadin.jpg

8 p.m.  Gunga Din (1939).  When the schedule was originally announced this was followed by the 1951 Soldiers Three which is terrible.  So just as well that has been replaced by Kim (1951).

Looking forward to GUNGA DIN. Don't think I've seen KIM in a long, long time.
