The Academy liked big musicals in those days.
One of the reasons 31 days of Oscars gets little viewing from me.

I got reactions from you to a couple of my posts about 20 hours ago. Is this just a recent thing?

Oh Crap! Does that mean that this (and the original) entire thread/s will disappear too???

All our fine work.... Gone to the Cornfield???That would indeed be a harsh result, however I would endorse that result if anyone posts some clip from Cabin in the Sky in that other "Joe" thread.

I could really go off on a rant here, but suffice that I certainly believe that it is disgraceful for the pharmaceutical industry to have such political clout in this country that they are allowed to "rape" the general populace with impunity for the sake of obscene levels of corporate gain (read that greed).
Of course those sentiments can easily be applied to a host of corporate "industries" in the states, and elsewhere.
sadly.
If it were not for Longtimer, we may never have seen the thoughts expressed in this great post.

Finally, something truly worthwhile. Silence.
I wish Joe would stay and hog the off-topic thread with the same kind of post.

The phrase "little people" makes me think of someone else who said something like "paying taxes is for the little people".

if tarantino includes a scene of sharon tate pitifully begging for the life of her unborn child in an extremely graphic bloody way then tarantino will deserve the condemnation he will get.
Hush. It is not the right time to talk about/politicize this issue.

Yes. Only people who are indifferent to money may criticize Trump.

Guess not many on here have seen these great shows hosted & shot by Murray
I have seen them quite often. Ken was quite ga-ga over the stars. There are some old filler things I have not seen in a long time, such as the one about movie theaters in small towns going broke because of the federal excise tax, or the one dealing with a New Orleans (I think) policeman handling a mentally ill suspect.

I've never heard of Lloyd Nolan. I'll take your word for it. I was just trying to be a wiseacre. Lol.
You will also be privileged to see Lloyd Nolan if you watch one of Holden's scheduled upcoming films, Toward the Unknown. (Holden's worst imo)

I couldn't find anything that stated that anyone was offered and refused an AFI award. If someone has some quotes or links to articles discussing such decisions, I for one would appreciate them being posted.
They may be reluctant to give one to someone who doesn't want to do the TV presentation, which I wouldn't be surprised if Gene Hackman said so, as he seems intent on maintaining his retirement. Same goes for Doris Day.
Reading back through the thread, it appears that a couple of posts about persons declining the award were guesses.
-
Why, generally, are such awards turned down? I recall periods where actors considered it "unfashionable" to attend OSCAR ceremonies (mid to late 1960s for example), but these AFI awards appear to have a lot of "decliners".

This sounds like John Hodiak. I enjoyed the Hitchcock movie, Lifeboat.

"Whip it good"
Excellent description. I found this my least favorite of the Barbara Stanwyck shows and I am not sure why. She is certainly at her vintage best cracking her whip and I agree Carolyn Jones does an excellent job in her role. I suspect my reason for disliking it is because there are one too many subplots for my taste. I could certainly have done without the Fabian subplot which I thought added nothing. I was also underwhelmed by the ending where crusty old Kate sends Carolyn off to the chapel to seek guidance.

This was my second favorite of the Stanwyck shows behind "An then there's Maud". I really liked the interaction between Kate and Chris as well as Kate and Berry. As you said, the last half hour of the show was excellent.

Well Longtimer, I'm a Longtimer and an Old timer. Been with TCM since '94....
Trying to decide if I am hearing the voice of Will Geer philosophizing with Rock Hudson prior to sending Rock to the surgeon for a final time in Seconds. I sort of think I am.

I think Selma's innocent comment which caused the older girls to giggle was something to the effect that God had been good to Ingeborg because he gave her a husband and a baby on the same day. The mention of a husband causes me to conclude that Ingeborg's father was not the baby's father but that some other male had taken advantage of this disturbed girl and that her father had tried, unsuccessfully, to prevent this sort of thing happening by keeping her out of school. After Ingeborg's death, which occurred on the same day her mother died, Selma concludes that Ingeborg died because she missed her mother.

Have any of you actually seen this movie?
Lord no.

I'm a little confused, Thenryb, because I didn't mention any other movies in my original answer other than Let's Dance.
Why are you confused? You mentioned both movies in your reply to my post. In any event, I was aware of those two movies. I just could not connect Loesser to Let's Dance.
Anyway, new rule of thumb for me. Avoid questions involving musicals

Robert Emmett Dolan was the uncredited Music Director of Let's Dance, but the songs were by Frank Loesser. Frank Loesser also had two big post-war Broadway musical hits that Princess of Tap mentioned in one of her hints. They were Guys and Dolls and The Most Happy Fella.
Aha. Poo on Wiki then. I knew Loesser had to be the composer but the other two movies you mentioned just did not fit.

Haha, I recognize that guy. But I can't put my finger on from where?

He pops up in many episodes of TV Series like Maverick and Peter Gunn where Robert Altman was the director. Movies included his compelling performance as an uncredited policeman in Bonnie and Clyde.

Is the movie Let's Dance, starring Fred Astaire and Betty Hutton, music and lyrics by Frank Loesser?
Wikiopedia says the composer was Robert Emmet Dolan. I have certainly checked what I believe to be Loesser's movies and none seem to fit.

No, for April in Paris. The above Hint#2 might help you. + The composer was also the lyricist.
I was aware of the hint other than that the composer was also the lyricist. Many possibilities, none of which fit all of the criteria, eg Pal Joey (composer who was also lyricist, stars who did not get along, but one of them was neither a singer or a dancer). Maybe someone else will pitch in and answer the question.
