♠ THE SWARM (1978) returns to the air! ♠
filmhistorian replied to Mr. Gorman's topic in General Discussions
Was very happy to finally see the widescreen restored version. It seems for the last few years (anyways) everytime this film airs the Fullscreen cut down edition has been playing. Would love to see TCM air The Towering Inferno and When Time Ran Out one of these days. Make for a great Irwin Allen night -
It's too bad New Year's Eve is "That's Entertainment" and "The Thin Man" yet again. A local channel years ago used to always show New Year's Eve with The Marx Brothers, Three Stooges or Abbott & Costello movies for several years. How cool if TCM started making it a yearly tradition. So many comedy teams/series that would qualify too. (Martin & Lewis, Laurel & Hardy, Ma & Pa Kettle, Francis, etc etc). I know they aired a Marx Brothers New Year's one time years ago. Maybe the ratings didn't work? Would be interesting to know

I for one am happy to see some of the newer films airing. I've been a long time fan of TCM and it's nice to see some of these films airing uncut and in their proper aspect ratio. Something most every other channel out there would never do. Many of these films aren't even circulating around anymore so it's not as if they are airing repeatedly on several different channels. The days of going to the video store and being able to rent all of these films are long gone. Sure maybe a few will show up on Fox Movie Channel or AMC from time to time, so what? It's not as if the TCM showing of the film is happening every week. After all these years I'm thankful TCM has stayed true to their format of airing films uncut and in their theatrical ratio (whenever possible) commercial free. Think of how many channels over the years started off great and have gone downhill to the point where they are unwatchable. Remember how good AMC used to be. Remember how good TV Land used to be, one of the only channels airing all of its tv shows uncut. I've discovered so many films on TCM over the years (both new and old) that I wouldn't have otherwise. TCM is a treasure to so many millions of people out there. From time to time they are going to air something you don't care for. Show me any other channel out there that every single show or movie they air you watch and like. Go ahead, I'll wait...

What Would You Like To See On TCM In 2021?
filmhistorian replied to David Guercio's topic in General Discussions
Abbott and Costello as Stars of the month would be cool. Include some of the Universal films that have not yet been shown on TCM Would love to see TCM resurrect the following Universal films that have been out of the limelight for many years. Curtain Call At Cactus Creek (1950) Fireman Save My Child (1954) Forty Pounds Of Trouble (1962) Once Upon A Horse (1958) Perils Of Pauline (1967) Stranger On The Run (1967) Up Front (1951) Willie & Joe At The Front (1952) Wild & Wonderful (1964) -
I'm with you here too. Nice to see Universal starting to open up the vaults to TCM with the premiere of Munster Go Home too!

"Up Front" (1951) and "Willie & Joe Back At The Front" (1952) This would make a great prime time double feature. These haven't been seen in years "More Abbott & Costello Universal films" We seem to get the same A&C movies when there is a treasure chest of Universal greats that haven't aired. Althought a few new ones made their appearance late last year, there's alot that haven't and would make for a perfect night. "Scavenger Hunt" (1979) Comedy classic ala Mad World that seems to have disappeared from circulation for decades. Appears a newly remastered print has been made, perfect time for an airing on TCM. "I Love A Mystery (1966)" and "The Perils Of Pauline (1967) Early TV Movies with all-star casts. "Don't Give Up The Ship" (1959), "Visit To A Small Planet" (1960) "It's Only Money" (1962) Paramount Jerry Lewis films that don't seem to air anymore. "The Hunter" (1980) Steve McQueen's last film "The Busy Body" and "The Spirit Is Willing" both (1967) Sid Caesar/William Castle double bill and a young Richard Pryor too (Busy Body) "American Hot Wax" (1978) The story of Alan Freed. Long since out of circulation.

DECEMBER SCHEDULE IS UP.
filmhistorian replied to classicchildstarletsfan's topic in General Discussions
There are some nice entries for the month but Thin Man again on New Years!!! These have been played to death. A Ma and Pa Kettle marathon (instead of just giving us 4 earlier in the month), Francis marathon (seems like the first film is the only one ever aired) or how about many of the Universal Abbott & Costello movies which haven't aired yet on TCM. That would have been a New Year's Eve treat. I too was disappointed not to see Von Ryan's Express or Tony Rome as part of the Sinatra SOTM. Thought for sure with all the Fox titles airing these would have been included this time around. The Disney additions have been great but why so many Full Screen versions of Widescreen films. Was an answer ever given maybe I missed it? Speaking of, The Swarm (a cult favorite) has been getting a lot of airings but yet everytime in Full Screen Why Why Why???? It's a 2:35:1 film too! Here's hoping to seeing some of the above in 2016 on TCM! -
Great to see The D.I. and -30- make their premieres on TCM tonight but dissapointed to see full frame prints run when both of these were shot in widescreen 1:85. Both available from Warner Archives in their correct aspect ratio so I would have assumed TCM would have received widescreen prints - too bad, great movies, nonetheless

Why is A & C Meet Frankenstein being letterboxed?
filmhistorian replied to clore's topic in General Discussions
It appears TCM must have received a new HD print of this film as it defintiely looked sharper and cleaner on the HD feed. Oddly the opening credits remaining Full Frame but the film itself was widescreen. Great to see these A&C films, maybe someday TCM will make them stars of the month. -
Has TCM ever done a retrospective on the Bowery Boys?
filmhistorian replied to movieman09's topic in General Discussions
Did anyone record (have) the Bowery Boys (not East Side Kids) movies when TCM aired them? -
Did someone pull the wrong print tonight? It was supposed to be aired in widescreen and if I'm not mistaken has aired in the past in widescreen.

There has been some discussion that Warner Bros just might be releasing this and other series on DVD in 2008. Let's hope and if they do hope they sell well so we can see other series like The Falcon, Philo Vance etc make their way to dvd.
-
It happened with a handful of other series around this same time, Daniel Boone, The Time Tunnel, to name a few

THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY ON YET AGAIN IN DECEMBER
filmhistorian replied to a topic in General Discussions
The point is, No channel is ever going to air everything you like 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week for the rest of your life. There are going to be movies, repeats etc that you aren't interested in or have already seen and don't care to see again. If you don't like what they are showing than watch something else. And thanks for the stupidity comment, so much for civilization on these boards I see. -
THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY ON YET AGAIN IN DECEMBER
filmhistorian replied to a topic in General Discussions
If you don't like, change the channel for 2 1/2 hrs then change it back. Never ceases to amaze the amount of complaining that goes on. Be happy you have TCM, cause without it, many of these films would be sitting in a vault with no airplay whatsover. -
It was great to see these today. It's been years, so many I can't even remember the last time TCM dug these out of the vault to air, with some of them being tcm premieres today. It seems no matter what they play someone is unhappy with it. Old movies, new movies, contemporary, someone has to complain. I say bravo and thank you TCM, it was great to see the UNCLE flicks. Thanks for running them marathon style.

BRING THESE TWO CLASSIC SHOWS ON TCM
filmhistorian replied to bewitched1's topic in General Discussions
Actually what's interesting is that other TCM channels (like TCM Latin America) does broadcast tv shows. Recently on a cruise ship I stumbled across this channel and part of their daily lineup was tv series and UNCUT too! Don't see tv series uncut these days on hardly any channel. -
I wonder if TCM will pay him a tribute
-
Could the reason be they no longer have the rights to air them, so once aired they are coming off the schedule?
-
What a treat to turn on Holmes and Dr. Watson only to see TCM is airing the newly restored prints from UCLA restoring the original Universal openings instead of those crappy pd prints. Could the other holmes films be seeing some air time in the near future????? Thanks TCM, you never cease to amaze us viewers with what you do

> Excellent schedule, filmhistorian. > > I'd just like to make a friendly suggestion... I > think Harry Palmer fans would be greatly disappointed > watching only 2 of the movies in the Harry Palmer > trilogy... might want to consider scheduling > Funeral in Berlin in between The Ipcress > File and Billion Dollar Brain. > Hi Cinemascope. It is an excellent suggestion. Unfortunately with rights issues and time constraints I just couldn't fit it in. I felt that because it wasn't a series where you have to see them exactly in order to understand what's going on, it wouldn't take away from the event. Plus approx 14 hrs of Caine films for the day, I figured fans wouldn't be too upset. I wanted to include The Wrong Box and Sleuth in this tribute as well but there wasn't enough time in the day. Looks like the next Caine Day schedule has already begun!
