  1. What do you notice about the Lubitsch touch? How do the props, the dialogue, and the staging help you understand the character of Alfred (Maurice Chevalier)? The director's use of of these tools helps us to not only get a sense of Alfred's character as a playboy, but also adds comedy, tension and some misdirection to the opening scene. Most of the dialogue in the scene is in French, so an audience that isn't versed in that language doesn't know what the characters are arguing about until the garter is revealed to us.
