I'm trying to remember a black & white film I saw. It was probably mid-late 40's. I think it was kind of a companion piece to "Goodbye Mr. Chips" except it was about a woman, and not a man. I can't remember if she was actually a teacher or not, but I think she might have been. Throughout the film there was a character named Sam who always loved her, but she never took things beyond platonic friendship, and only realized she loved him too when she grew old, and he was always nearby to help her out and take care of her as needed. At the end she says she should have married him, and he says something along the lines of "that's alright", because it's too late for that, he's just happy to be with her in her last years.
