So you're saying that Ben said more than what was posted above??????
Sorry, but you lack any credibility.
"Sorry, but you lack any credibility." In your opinion.
I have a question for you. Why are you so enraged that I posted a comment that you don't agree with? Is that not allowed here? Must everyone agree or they get berated?
Tell you what... since you seem to be more upset about this then I ever was. You may have the last word on this subject. Use all the names you need .... I will not comment.
BUT
I will be commenting, in the future, when there is something I don't agree with.
Enjoy!

No, I didn't mean that Ben would go down in history. Instead I meant that Ben was explaining to viewers the historical context of this sub-genre and its impact to audiences at the time.
Anyhow, you have yet to show where Ben added "HIS political views' to the movie in that intro. That isn't a disagreement of opinion but instead you making up your own facts. I believe I've been fair to you but you have yet to be specific about where Ben added "HIS political views' in that comment.
Instead all I got was that Ben has made OTHER political comments in OTHER intros.
So I'm sticking to my POV here; needless cry-wolf complaint.
I will.. in the future call out Ben's Political opinions, in case you miss them.
I saw something you didn't.... it happens

Well, now, just after I posted my ultimatum, this actually sounds reasonable. But I'm just letting you know that Ben M.will never change. Ever. So getting all angry about it is probably not going to accomplish much.
Probably not. But I can and will continue to express my views.
It's an American kind of thing

marimari, everything you've said expresses that you're utterly and completely incapable of even considering to understand any point of view besides your own, so I'm done talking to you. Your complaining is not going to change how it works on TCM. I've suggested you just turn on the movie after the commentary. TCM will always be like this forever. You can accept it, or continue to complain about it, and your complaints won't change the commentary on TCM ever. Have a nice life.
Let's hope you have learned something this exchange... not to jump to conclusions and everyone is entitled to their own opinion...whether you agree with them or not. Even you.?

I agree that ALL films should be shown. ALL.
But to me 'your way of thinking' also wishes to erase history. Again, read Ben's actual comment. The FULL comment. You wish that Ben didn't make such a comment. That is trying to erase history as well.
Ben seems like a nice guy... but going down in History is a bit of a stretch.
Yes, I would have preferred he would not have added HIS political views to the movie. That is the bottom line in all this.Agree or disagree... it is your right.

Oh, Jesus Christ, I didn't really specifically call you names. I said your post had the profile of being a troll, and if you knew about the history of this board, you would know my statement is accurate. You haven't been here for 10 years. You don't know how many people have made one post saying "The TCM hosts are too liberal, and I hate them" and then never post again. Your post was EXACTLY like all those many, many dozens of posts. I've tried to say there was absolutely nothing personal in my heart - you're the one who's full of righteous anger.
Temper. Temper

Please try to think from the perspective of a 25-year-old who has no freaking idea that blackface was ever a thing, and they randomly come across TCM and see Holiday Inn. They've got no context. They've got no perspective. It's a shocking image for them. Thus, TCM feels it's necessary to apologize for these images and put them in context. They can't assume everybody comes in armed with a wealth of knowledge that this is the way it was in 1942. They've got to think about 2018 and not bringing down a sandstorm of criticism on themselves. At least they're brave enough to still show the movie. There's been speculation on here that at some point, TCM will just stop showing all movies with blackface altogether.
When I or people that I know come across something they don't understand... we/they research it. Find out more about the subject.
With your way of thinking... the willowing process will leave us with about 50 movies that will not offend people.
Learn from History... don't erase it!!

I have no idea what the first sentence means.
The commentary by the hosts is such a tiny part of the overall TCM programming, I'm utterly exhausted how angry people still get about it after all these years. You have advice for me? I've got advice back atcha pal. Turn on TCM two minutes later and turn it off as soon as the movie ends, and you never have to get angry again!
Or stop watching TCM if you hate it so much.
I made a comment. YOU didn't like it. YOU assumed. YOU called me names.
Don't like the comments section... don't read it.
-
And I am adding to Ben's last comments, the other comments he has made. I would love to quote them exactly, but since TCM removes movies, I can't. ( Holiday Inn and the blackface routine comes to mind)
You are entitled to your stance... just as I am.
And we disagree.

To me Zea is making a different point than the one you implied based on a review of the actual comment.
As Larry noted the comment was related to a sub-genre of films and how American audiences, who where mostly white, reacted to this sub-genre. So to me Ben was just explaining the historical context of this sub-genre and its impact to American movie goers at the time this sub-genre was popular.
Therefore I really don't see where "Stop with the "we can't offend Anyone" routine." applies.
I.e. to me you are seeing something that isn't there. That you're the one that was offend and thus it is you that is being too 'PC'.
I wasn't looking at it in a sub-gene way. I was looking at it as a movie about soldiers fighting in a war.
And to me, Ben was inserting his ( not for the first time) political point of view onto a movie. I've seen the movie before so I was not impacted by his slant on the movie. But someone who has never seen the movie might have their view altered.

Nothing personal. I don't know you! You just made your third post ever, so I assume you can't possibly know how many dozens or hundreds of people have come on here, made one angry post about why they hate TCM and then never posted again. The fact that you made a post exactly like these other people who posted once and disappeared forever made you a very likely candidate to be just like them. I was just playing the odds.
I still wish somebody would report exactly what was said, rather than just expressing a lot of hate and not being able to specify. "Painting the white soldiers as some kind of villains"? Please be more specific!
Someone posted the exact text and you still have to option to watch for yourself.
This last Host political statement was one too many for me and I decided to say something.
My advice... don't gamble and don't assume
-
I have a problem with putting the current ( whatever that may be) political spin on a movie.
Personally for me... I prefer to watch older movies. Before actors/actresses started spewing hate.
I look to movies to entertain me, as a break from the reality of the day.
How about the 'Host' talk about the film and not interject their personal political views. We are all adults, we can figure out what is right or wrong all by ourselves.

I would hope that most consistent viewers of TCM are well aware of the disparate politics and questionable social morés depicted in films over the decades. A movie of even 7 or 10 years ago may not reflect the attitudes of today, let alone 50 or 70 years ago.
Movies, novels, etc. cannot be refilmed or rewritten each decade to suit the standards of the day. They are historical. And like all forms of history, they should be viewed, read and taken for the time period from which they came. Revile them, criticize them, hate them....they were what they were....WHEN they were.
Movies, like novels, are a microscope into our history. (We just completed a course delving into that very subject.) If what they depict is abhorrent, then it behooves viewers and readers to learn from them and question our own present-day behavior and attitudes accordingly.
I'm of the opinion that amending certain films with a caveat of "please excuse the following" (so to speak) shouldn't be necessary for the intelligent, classic-loving TCM viewer. It's patronizing, and I think we're smarter and more sophisticated than that.
Thank you. You hit on my point better then I did.

I suggest you watch the whole Host Intro
"Generally white soldiers fighting dangerous natives to maintain an Empires grip on it's colonies"
Adding race... since England did the same thing to America... is just stirring the racial pot and totally uncalled for.
-
It's painting the 'soldiers', especially the white soldiers as some kind of villains. They were Soldiers following orders. There were also native/Indian Soldiers as well, fighting along side of them.
The troll remark was low and uncalled for.

I have watched a few Host Intros where the host has apologized for a scene or subject matter in the film.
The latest is Lives Of A Bengal Lancer... "White Soldiers".... SERIOUSLY????
This was how life was then. Stop with the "we can't offend Anyone" routine.
