  1. It amuses me how he says 2 bullets to the chest is “just routine”! Glad I don’t have his job.

  3. BTW how are the hosts not likeable? Ben’s existed almost 20 years on TCM. Dave Karger reminds me of a young Robert Osbourne. I’m not a huge fan of the Film Noir guy, but he clearly knows his subject. I have no objections to any of the hosts. Yes some subjects like “blackface” get repeated a lot, but for people who only tunein for one movie per day, it might be the first time they’ve ever seen it. To us it’s old. To them it’s new.
  4. Censorship can exist inside private organizations like the Academy, so the term is appropriate. What filmmaker or studio would want to make a historically film, if they know they are disqualified from winning an award? The Supreme Court in previous decisions called this “a chilling effect” on freedom of expression.
  5. The rule would make some movies impossible to make.... like 1776 or Romeo & Juliet or Julius Caesar. Because the world of the past was 99% male-led and dominated. And if the movie is set in Europe pre-1800, then it was nearly all white. The Academy Awards have essentially censored 90% of historical movies.
  6. Incorrect. The official name of the award is: “The Academy Award”. The unofficial nickname could easily be dropped from future press releases (and no need to redesign the statue).
  7. PLEASE DON’T CENSOR NUDITY. For every naked Churchill there’s also a naked Fay Wray (or similar beauty). I want to see & appreciate it. I’ve seen very few post-2000 movies I’d call “classic”. They are barely watchable. For example: Slumdog Millionaire was a decent film, but it comes nowhere near the Golden and Silver Age of Hollywood. Hopefully TCM’s experiment with post-2000 gets low viewership, so they don’t do it again. (shrug) We shall see.

  10. A bunch of movies that were pro-totalitarian (99% true)
  11. . And this one that usually aired through the afternoon:
  12. TCM still airs the “Up all Night” promo from the 1990s which is good, but I also miss this one when I woke-up in the mornings:
  13. You are using a blog. Even Wikipedia would not allow that for a valid citation. - In 20 years Parasite will be considered a bad movie just like Oscar winner Tom Jones (horribly written & bad camera work) and a few other “best picture” winners. Movies we think are great today often age poorly as the decades pass. - Your policy of “instant classic” means my 2019 Honda Insight could be considered a “classic car”! Ridiculous. And nonsense. There is no such thing as an instant classic. (Aside: If I want to get special classic plates on my car, I need to wait 25 years to do
  14. I have watched TCM since the 90s and they never showed a movie newer than 25 years old. That was their original policy. Might as well rename TCM as “HBO” is they’re going to show new stuff.
  15. I searched for Passing Parade but didn’t find any.
  16. Most of Obama’s debt was created during his first two years, when the Democrats held majorities in the Congress. (The massive bailouts & stimulus spending.) Furthermore all 8 years of Reagan were under the control of Democrat Congresses. If you insist “debt is created by Congress” then you can only blame the DNC.
  17. I guess nobody’s interested. Either that or people have evolved & think communism is okay (shrug)
  18. I GUESS YOU hated Robert Osborne too, because he said a movie is “not classic” until a few decades have passed. There’s nothing classic about a movie just made 10-15 years ago (else TCM should rename itself Turner MODERN Movies),
  19. I just checked the schedule & this 14-part documentary is being shown with non-classic movies from the 90s, 2000s, and 2010s. Not just one or two, but a whole ton of them. Over the years I’ve seen a lot of channels (Learning, History, Travel, SciFi, etc) drift from their original purpose & I hope Turner CLASSIC Movies is not drifting too. This documentary & accompanying modern movies probably would have fit better on a different channel like HBO or TNT or AMC. Robert Osborne said in 2013 it takes a few decades to discover if a movie is truly classic: Does it stand the
  20. At least they HAVE theme months. The other classic channel I watch doesn’t have organized themes & doesn’t even start at the top of the hour (with weird times like 6:05 or 6:10). They just shovel one movie after another.
  21. As for Shatner he treats the fans like dirt. I’ve seen him in person 4 times, and three of those times he insulted either the audience or a fan or another on-stage guest (in one case he insulted all 3 the same time). I like Kirk, not the actor
  22. Picard is emasculated. Instead of the strong confident captain we saw from 1987 onward, he’s been turned into a wimp, that lets people boss him around. CBS ruined the character in similar fashion as Disney did to Luke Skywalker (also emasculated). The show also ruined 7 of 9’s character & the Federation itself. It’s no longer paradise on earth, and Roddenberry’s positive future. Instead it looks like a dystopia (which I would not want to visit).
  23. EVEN NOW four years later, Robert Osborne has found the words to make me respect a remarkable person (Olivia de Havilland).
  24. Great article about a piece of Hollywood history I knew nothing about: - How Olivia de Havilland and Ronald Reagan Beat the Hollywood Communists in the late 30s and 40s: https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/08/how-olivia-de-havilland-and-ronald-reagan-beat-the-hollywood-communists/
  25. Your question was answered in the first sentence.
