It was filmed at Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernadino mountains, which is about an hour and a half from Los Angeles.

You're definitely not nuts: it's called If a Man Answers with Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin. He's a photographer and she's worried he'll cheat with his beautiful models, so her mother gives her a book on how to train dogs, believing this can be applied to men. Comedic complications ensue. Quite cute, and during the period Dee and Darin were married to eachother. They also did That Funny Feeling and Come September, where they first met and fell in love.

There was also two other film adaptations of Ellroy's books: 1988's Cop with James Woods was a rather bad adaptation of Blood on the Moon and the more recent Brown's Requiem. There was also a failed televesion version of LA Confidential with Keifer Sutherland. I'd read production costs were too expensive and it was never aired on network televesion. The Trio network has aired the few episodes that were filmed, though who gets Trio? One final note, there was also a film version of Ellroy's personal memoir My Dark Places that was filmed in 2003, but I can't seem to find out what happened to the film. David Duchovny played Ellroy, but it's not listed on IMDB.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, as the movie I thought of is actually in color. There is a scene in Shirley Temple's The Blue Bird where she and her brother go to heaven and they meet children waiting to be born. It's been years since I've seen it, so I don't remember if their's a ship or not.

You seem to be the "go-to person" when it comes to movie trivia, so I'm appealing to you for aid. Tried a thread of my own and received very little info. Do you know the movies that are included in the "open all night" intro? The bus scene is Strangers on a Train, the fur coat modeling is Pennies from Heaven, and I was told that the car turnig its lights off is from The Wrong Man, but other than that, I'm stumped. Just one of those things I wonder about everytime I see the intro. Help with any of the others would be appreiated : )

For you Chris Elliot fans: he's written a book called "The Shroud of the Thwacker," a psuedo-historical fictional comedy about a serial killer in late 1800s New York. A friend has a copy and the book jacket description looked hysterical, in a decidedly off beat, very Chris Elliot sort of way.

Sean Connery in "The Untouchables" and Kevin Spacey in "L.A. Confidential." I remember reading a review of Spacey's performance saying it seemed you could actually see his eyes dilate.

As a former AP history student myself, I can relate. I think what you're attempting is totally do-able. A way to focus your project might be to write about the historical inaccuracies and discrepancies in the depiction of events and people in film. Getting a subscription to something like Netflix would probably come in handy. Two other ideas, as an undergrad, I wrote papers for an American history class, one about pre-code films and the other about film noir. Both you can use to compare to what was going on in the country at the time and show how it was reflected in film, or, inversely, how film affected society. With pre-code films, depictions of loosening sexual mores, increased violence, etc., and the conservative backlash (also a good for drawing comparisons to modern complaints about the film industry). Film noir, for example, growing fear in society about the war and also changes in women's roles in country. Hope this was helpful!
