BEQUEST TO THE NATION 1973 AKA THE NELSON AFFAIR Directed by James Cellan Jones .Produced by Hal Wallis released by Universal.Peter Finch Glenda Jackson Anthony Quayle Magaret Leighton. Another version -more accurate- of the Lord Nelson-Lady Hamilton affair A bit long at roughly 118 minutes,Beautiful cinematography and nice sets,Set few months before Trafalgar ,Acting is good but it is adapted from a play and it shows, quite talky until the last 35 minutes where there is action.Wallis has his name in bold on all posters and the director is in very very small print,Well Wallis must have lost a bundle with this one. Apparently there is no dvd or video release of this film. 6.5/10

The drinking started early. He lacked confidence. He was a beautiful man but you can see the difference in less than 2 years between Sabrina and Picnic.I know one was in B &Wand the other in color but it is very apparent even with shadows etc in Sabrina he looks 10 years younger than in Picnic. When he died at 63 he looked 20 years older unfortunately.

Well i'am starting to look for a turkey to write about,i need the exposure, but seriously a real good book written on a flop is Final Cut by Steven Bach on the whole Heaven's Gate fiasco, a real great book.Actually I liked the movie. -
Burton had 10 years of experience with jealous Liz then,he was an expert for this,he also had a fling with Florinda Bolkan in another film,he was a busy man and very smart....According to Richard Burton's biography "And God Created Burton" Bujold had an affair with the actor when they were filming.

Bill Holden was a fine actor, but he hated dancing,i think he danced in only 2 or 3 movies,he always ask for extra $ to dance as 'a stunt man',It was a real phobia for him If i remember well the Picnic dance routine was so horrible for him, they had to move the camera around him to give the illusion of movement,i think they even had a rotating stage.I have seen all of his films minus 4 or 5 early ones,Personnally I feel he looks too old for the part in Picnic,He looks much older than Robertson,Holden was only 35 at the time.

So was Burton,he had affairs with Nathalie Delon and Raquel Welch during the filming.

Equus showing tonight, there is some tough scenes with horses in it.The movie was entirely filmed in Ontario Canada a US-UK Production though.I always liked and remebered Sidney Lumet line about his problems with the film he said ' The producers wanted a happier ending so we changed it so that Equus wins the Kentucky Derby' but they refused this one...🙂

This is the reason for sure, Paramount has a tv network here in Canada and they never show any movie, what a waste.

Redford got $2 million for his few minutes on screen !

I think Beckett was produced by Hal Wallis (Elvis complained that Wallis was using the profits from his Presley movies to make good serious films ! ) I noticed a lot of Hal Wallis movies ,the ones he did as an independent are not shown or very rarely on TCM

Indeed Hedy was a favorite of the Hollywood photographers like George Hurrell ,Clarence Bull etc .I collect vintage original photos of Hedy Lamarr for many years, She was the most beautiful woman on the the first 50 years of the silver screen IMO and please no arguing from a Ava Gardner fan ! -
I heard a lifespan of 20 years max for dvdr i have a few hundreds in the 15 year range there is also the compatibility factor, some dvd-r are better than others. i never by new dvds, the only one i bought was the 2 cd set of Citizen Kane a long time ago ,i rarely rewatch a movie, some i do but not many. And i watch about 500-600 films a year.

Hey Dargo you were the first to write about Ben and his GARGANTUAN A'S I thought i was one to really care for this. His A's in any word are really present to say the least. As for Alicia Malone there is no way for me, sorry Alicia. But i enjoyed looking for her designed shoes, they were done to cover a tatoo on top now is it both of them? i do not know.Did you noticed this Dargo ? And do not say I 'am a foot fetichist ? It was of course before the pandemic.

If TCM decides to do one Neo-Noir Friday evening once a month-i hope they will do(minus Ben may I suggest). The Grifters should be presented. I watched it again ,i saw it first run in 1990 but never since. Last week everything was fresh-except i always remembered Annette Bening was showing everything(This is the movie that 'convinced' Warren Beatty of her talents to offer her a role,he was friendly with Anjelica Huston).Back to the movie ,directed by Stephen Frears produced by Martin Scorsese. Anjelica Huston gives her best performance i prefer this one than her performance in The Dead. John Cusack is also very good in it-it does not happen often in his case. A great movie.

The Ronstadt documentary was produced and presented by CNN,hence the ads ,i have seen it then,it is a good one. LINDA RONSTADT: The Sound of My Voice, the 2019 Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards winner for Best Music Documentary, will premiere as a CNN Films documentary Wednesday, New Year’s Day, at 9:00pm ET and PT on CNN. She formed the ‘Trio’ with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris, creating harmonic, storied performances including “Telling Me Lies,” “Wildflowers,” and “To Know Him Is To Love Him.” LINDA RONSTADT: The Sound of My Voice was produced by James Keach and PCH Films, who previously teamed with CNN Films for the acquisition and broadcast of GLEN CAMPBELL…I’ll Be Me.

I was thinking the same thing, TCM is doing this because of a book on a turkey ? Wow i should write a book on the Ben Hur movie from 2016! A Mega stiff .There is a book coming out in September on Darryl F Zanuck by Scott Eyman -he was showcasing his Cary Grant bio on TCM last year.I hope they will give it 4 evenings as Zanuck was the best mogul of the movie era,he could do anything,:screenplays, editing, marketing, an active casting couch and great stories a brilliant mind,i have several good bios on Zanuck but i 'am looking forward for this one .The first bio on Zanuck i think) FROM 1971 was titled' Don't Say Yes Till I Finish Talking'. Well they will have to book some important Fox films to do this correctly. but The Bonfire of the Vanities overkill is a big time error from my point of view. -
Re TWILIGHT i have seen it first run, great cast, a disapointment,i remember saying to my then girlfriend it was a movie my granfather would have liked,i will have to see it again but there is not much action if i remember well.

Body Double is her film i liked the most as she was part of the film and not a star yet. Unfortunately i can't really say i like her childish voice, never liked it,she inherited it from her mother Tippi Hedren ,it sounds a little like her,I watched Night Moves last week and the print was corrected,i watched it on tv many years ago and you could see a big boom microphone following every word the 2 actors were saying ,i remember it was in a small room in the movie, Griffith was having an affair with Warren Beatty while she was in the movie or just before, she was 15 or 16!!

The Southerner . He displayed his range,Zachary Scott gave a great performance, beautiful film.

Yikes ! not first run thank god ,Iwatched it on tv many years ago, terrible and entirely filmed in Montreal in January before climate changes. So it was very cold.

Gable knew about Judy Lewis for sure but a son was important for him and Gable did not need to rape any woman. He was the Brad Pitt of his era. Women were throwing themselves at him,he prefered waitresses and secretaries by the way. He had an on-off sexual relationship with Crawford for about 10 years,no he did not need to rape Loretta Young.. About Mitchum I do not know the $50 thing Eddie was talking about but i have read in a few books when Loretta Young was explaining the 'rates' for the fines in the jar Mitchum yelled to her 'how much do you charge for a F$$$$ ?! I guess Eddie censored it for tv...

I have seen the film first run in 84 or 85,what is the difference? unfortunately i do not remember much of the film shown at the time,i watched the ending on TCM a few months ago.Is there many changes? Ithought the brothers did the film as they wanted it to be...

The really rotten movies started with Kissin' Cousins in 1964. King Creole,Flaming Star,Follow that dream(-i have seen it as very young kidin 62 or63 at a matinée) were the ones i think were standing out,Loving You has a good cast with Lizabeth Scott. In a way Lennon was right :Elvis died in the army...
