I adore Vera-Ellen. One of the true greats who never got her due.

I agree, Barry!! "South Pacific" is a beautiful film. I saw the current stage p[roduction and I'm seeing it again! I still would have LOVED to have seen Doris Day as Nellie-but Mitzi Gaynor did very well. Her best performance, I think!!

I ADORE Vera-Ellen . She's incredible. I too read that line in Basinger's book. Ordinarily, I love Basinger's work. However, she was way off-base in this case. VE was one of the FINEST dancers ever to grace a musical!!!

No matter how good or bad a classic film is, I applaud when "The End" sign comes on! I always show respect after watching a film on TCM. Call me nuts, but that's how I am!!

I agree. McLerie was great. She was also in Warners' remake of "The Desert Song" and I think she was in "Where's Charley?" I saw her -along time ago-as Anita in the National Tour of "West Side Story." Unlikely casting, but she was great. She had the lead in Irving Berlin's "Miss Liberty" but that show flopped. You can hear her on the delightful cast album. It's kind of like Helen Gallagher's career-a very good one-but just missing stardom. MClerie was wonderful as Blair Brown's mom on the TV show "MollyDodd." I haven't heard of her since.I believe her son died tragically in an asccident around this time.

Can't wait to see this, Cinemascope. it should be arriving at my mailbox any day now!
-
"Portrait of Jennie" is one of my all-time favorites. I saw it as a child on TV and have adored it ever since. I always recommend this film and the lovely Robert Nathan book on which it's based.

Hi Brad!!
I hope you loved "Oklahoma!" It's one of my faves. I'm also nuts about Shirley Jones.
-
I loved Gloria Grahame. But as far as I'm concerned, there's no question Hagan should have won for Singin...An obviously BRILLIANT performance. On the other hand Grahame wasn't nominated for what I consider her best performance as Debbie in " The Big Heat."
-
I agree. One of the all-time worst. One of the few movies it's almost impossible to sit through. "Reflections" is a masterpiece in comparison!
-
"The Pirate" is one of my all-time favorites. Designed and performed beautifully. Very much ahead of its time. Glad you liked it!!

I'd also heard that Josh Logan got angry because Ms. day wouldn't "audition" for the part at a party. The proof's in the pudding. Doris Day is and was a HUGE superstar. Gaynor ...?Not that she wasn't talented. She was also set for "Some Like it Hot." Can you imagine that without MM?

"Camelot" was excerpted on the Ed Sullivan show. Prior to that, the show was running out of its advance sale after largely negative reviews. After the Sullivan show, there were lines around the block. It's a shame. I think it has a lovely score. I think some adaptations fall under the heading " What were they thinking?" Case in point: Lucy in "Mame." What a performance Lansbury would have given. Too late now.
-
I TOTALLY agree with you!! Logan was OK with straight films-especially, I thought with "Picnic" but he couldn't direct a musical on film to save his life. I wonder if this had to do with his lack of medication for his manic depression. Seriously.
-
My thoughts exactly. Doris Day was MADE for that role. If Josh Logan hadn't been so short-sighted... I think he was angry that Doris wouldn't audition for Nellie at a party.

Hi Sandy!
Wishing you the merriest of Christmases and a great New Year.
I'm a huge "Belle of New York" and Vera-Ellen fan, I have it on laserdisc, Hopefully, it'll re-appear on DVD soon. I think I remember reading that the film's failure was a huge disappointment for all concerned. Besides the two wonderful leads, I think it also has a charming score. Perhaps it was a little too reminiscent of "Guys and Dolls."

Thanks, Sandy. I was lucky to have grown up in Philly which, at the time, had 5 or 6 legit houses. I saw virtually all the musicals and many straight plays that were there from the late fifties to late sixties. The single most exciting one was the original "Gypsy" followed by "Redhead" with Gwen Verdon and Richard Kiley.
-
Hey Sandy-I think we corresponded before. Whistle was definitely ahead of its time. I saw it in its Philly tryout. Lansbury was incredible as was Remick. She gort to sing "There Won't Be Trumpets" which was cut out of town. Remick was about to rehearse an LA production of " A Little Night Music" when she passed away.

You're so right, Terrence! I adore Vera-Ellen. One of the greatest dancers to ever hit Hollywood. And gorgeous, too. I'll watch her in anything!
-
Happy Birthday to Lee Remick. She would only have been 71. We lost her far too early. She was a beautiful and extremely talented actress and you could tell she was a wonderful person, too. I had the privilege of seeing her in "Anyone Can Whistle." If you don't know her work, seek her films out. She's always special. Happy Birthday Miss Remick.

It's really a toss-up , but I'd have to give it to Jimmy since "Vertigo"'s my favorite Hitchcock!
What a hard choice!
Best Judy Garland musical on her SUTS day?

I adore "The Pirate" even though not everyone will agree with me. I love it for several reasons. Minnelli attempted so much with this film It's dazzling to look at and the performances are incredible. Judy at her sophisticated best!!
