  1. Hi, allthumbs, Wiki points out that the Daphne du Maurier story might have been based on a 1917 short story in which all animals of the world suddenly turned on and attacked humans, killing many of them, with the following being, perhaps, one of the reasons why (from the short story itself): And, finally, there comes the inevitable "why?" Why did the beasts who had been humbly and patiently subject to man, or affrighted by his presence, suddenly know their strength and learn how to league together, and declare bitter war against their ancient master? It is a most difficult and obscure question. I give what explanation I have to give with very great diffidence, and an eminent disposition to be corrected, if a clearer light can be found. Some friends of mine, for whose judgment I have very great respect, are inclined to think that there was a certain contagion of hate. They hold that the fury of the whole world at war, the great passion of death that seems driving all humanity to destruction, infected at last these lower creatures, and in place of their native instinct of submission, gave them rage and wrath and ravening. http://www.gutenberg.org/files/35617/35617-h/35617-h.htm#CHAPTER_I
  2. Darkblue, I wonder if the Mitchum character in Cape Fear could have been copied from his character in Night of the Hunter? I think Robert de Niro is the only actor who could replace Mitchum in both films.
  3. Hitchcock's version just wasn't frightening to me. Maybe if it had been rats or packs of dogs running wild.
  4. Redbirds, huh? Listen to the lecture about nature, about 49 minutes into the radio broadcast, near the very end of the story.. That's the ecology lecture. I think it was added to the radio version of the story. See here at 48:39: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erdHwGVBuvY Also, see this: The author saw a man plowing a field while seagulls were wheeling and diving above him and composed a story of these birds growing hostile and attacking.[1] The east wind is implicated in the birds' attack – a reference to the threat to England of Soviet and Chinese Communism and to the Cold War fought between East and West beginning towards the end of the 1940s. The author may also have been inspired by the short novel "The Terror," published by Arthur Machen in 1917, in which all animals, infected by a contagion of hatred generated by World War I, revolt against humankind http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Birds_%28story%29
  5. The Birds was originally an ecology-related short story. About how man had messed with nature, etc., etc. and the birds were reacting. I heard the original radio show based on the short story in 1953. Click on #21: https://archive.org/details/Lux18 Lotsa birds:
  6. The topic of this thread is about the movie: NIGHT OF THE HUNTER
  7. I think that was done for the movie so he could surprise several people by announcing he was Jewish.
  8. That's an interesting idea. I think we would have continued to stay out of the War if the Japanese had not attacked, and that might have allowed the Germans to take England and other territories in Europe. If you watch some of TCM's shorts on the early days of the war, showing our tiny little tanks and our bi-planes, that shows how unprepared for war we were in the early 40s.
  9. Yes, I agree. That's also why he gave up the money, because he couldn't go through all of that again, and he wished he had his father back instead of the money, and at that moment he thought of the money as being the cause of all the problems. Unfortunately, he couldn't just keep the money, because the Hays Code rules were still in effect.
  10. 435 “It works! It works! We'll name it after your father, Mr. Jumphigh Trampoline!”
  11. This is a Fox movie, so you might have seen it on the Fox Movie Channel.
  12. I think it is because she wants her sister and her sister's friends to know he is NOT Jewish, because if he IS Jewish, that would "mess up" some kind of party her sister is throwing. So, McGuire and her sister seem to be prejudiced, according to him, which is exactly what he is trying to find out about what other people think of him as a Jew.
  13. I find it interesting as a history lesson, giving us a rare glimpse of the 1940s that we don't usually see or hear.
  14. I see now that this film is very dated. Such as with the line "I Was Jewish for 6 Months!" That sounds a little silly today.
  15. This film used to be shown on TV occasionally, then it disappeard for many years.
  16. I love this film. It's a high class teen movie that is not in any way vulgar, and Sandra Dee is adorable.
  17. I didn't mean to be teasing anyone. I thought there might be some beginner who would name the movie and be glad that he won. If I just say "oh I know it", but don't give a hint, then people might accuse me of lying. If I figure it out and give the title, especially after a long series of photos, that upsets other people who have also spent a lot of time searching. I don't want to disappoint them. Oh, well, let's just calm down and carry on. Ok?
  18. You insulted me here too.
  19. Ha, excuses, excuses. Suppose all of us who are participating post comments every now an then, to let everyone know we are here. But guys like you should not make fun of us.
  20. I just saw the last photo just now. He could have been nice and posted it first. \ Why didn't you guess it before seeing that last photo?
