  1. That's the way I've always heard it to be. 12:01 AM Jan 1, 1900 would have been the first minute of the turn of the 20th Century. I remember it being that way for at least 55 of my years during the 20th Century. I never heard anyone say "turn of the 19th Century", unless they were referring to Jan 1, 1800. During those 55 years, I often heard of it as "before the turn of the century" (meaning the late 1800s) and after the turn of the century (meaning the early 1900s). However, it is easy to get mixed up. And I'm sure that if you press the issue, we would see a long debate here.
  2. Test Just had the repair man out, fixed XP system. I'm testing. Works OK. I LOVE the movie Shane. I saw it in a theater when it was first released. Just a wonderful movie. I watch it every time it is on.
  3. Yes, it looks like the system copied the quote ok, but it did censor several of the words with ****.\ You can do a Google search for the PDF file by using the title of the book as keywords: http://www.umsl.edu/~gradyf/film/Selznick_memos.pdf
  4. See Adobe Reader Page 3 of Selznick’s famous Memos, GONE WITH THE WIND Sub-Page 147, P. 37: I hope this text copies ok: Selznick memos concerning Gone with the Wind-a selection Memo from David O. Se/znick, selected and edited by Rudy Behlmer (New York: Viking, 1972) http://www.umsl.edu/~gradyf/film/Selznick_memos.pdf P. 37: Here we come to a very touching point and I am hopeful that you share my feelings on it. I have already discussed it with George and he agrees-but then, our feelings are prejudiced. I refer to the Ku Klux ****. 1 personally feel quite strongly that we should cut out the **** entirely. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to clarify for audiences the difference between the old **** and the **** of our times. (A year or so ago I refused to consider remaking The Birth of a Nation, largely for this reason. Of course we might have shown a couple of Catholic Klansmen, hut it would he rather comic to have a Jewish Kleagle; I, for one, have no desire to produce any anti-**** rum either. In our picture I think we have to be awfully careful that the Negroes come out decidedly on the right side of the ledger, which I do not think should be difficult.) Furthermore, there is nothing in the story that necessarily needs the ****. The revenge for the attempted attack can very easily be identical with what it is without their being members of the ****. A group of men can go out to "get" the perpetrators of an attempted rape without having long white sheets over them and without having their membership in a society as a motive. I do hope that you will agree with me on this omission of what might come out as an unintentional advertisement for intolerant societies in ( these fascist-ridden times ..
  5. What do you mean by "disconnect" and "reconnect"? I start my computer, then go to Google search, then I come here. When I leave, I go back to Google search and this board always keeps me logged in. There is a small check box when you log in that says something like "Remember my Password" or something. Check that box and it should remember you in case you are asked to SIGN IN again. But I am almost never asked to SIGN IN again. They keep me signed in even when I leave the board for some other website and even when I turn my computer off for the night. But maybe someone else can help you. It might take a day or so for you to get the right response.
  6. You are talking about the book, not the movie. I've never read the book. There is no Kl*n in the movie. The guy who tried to attack Scarlett in her carriage, in the movie, was white. The hero who saved her was a black man, Big Sam. Selznick didn't want some of the book stuff to be in the movie, and I agree with his decisions. He was a great man and great producer. He and Big Sam can eat at my dinner table any time.
  7. I've often wondered what danged fool planted radishes rather than turnips or potatos during times of starvation? I finally figured that the Yankees stole all their potatos and turnips and the seeds, and left them only with radishes.
  8. I think Rhett wanted to become a major upstanding member of Georgia society, yet he still wanted bawdy xxx from girls who knew how to do xxx his way. I think he saw in young Scarlett both a high-society dame and a girl he could teach his kind of xxx to. Remember that at the 12 Oaks party one of the men said Rhett was not a respected man and his own family would not have anything to do with him. And after Bonnie was born and he built that big new house in Atlanta, Rhett took Bonnie and Scarlett out for afternoon strolls so the high-class people in his neighborhood could see them and respect them. But Rhett and Scarlett were constantly faced with a common modern problem: Both of them wanted to be the Boss of the family, the Head of the Household. But Scarlett couldn’t stand Rhett being the boss, and he couldn’t stand her being the boss, and they were both too selfish and stubborn to be able to work things out between them.
  9. That's one of the main points of Gone With the Wind..... both Rhett and Scarlett didn't know how to have a normal romantic relationship, like millions of other people who marry, divorce, marry, divorce, marry, divorce, et. That's what makes the film far more realistic to millions of viewers.
  10. Haven’t you ever seen a guy in love with a woman and think.... “I don’t know what he sees in HER.” She’s childish, bossy, selfish, irritating, etc., etc., etc., but if you try to tell the guy that he shouldn’t love her, he is likely to get mad at you. What you are telling me about Scarlett is YOUR opinion about her, not Rhett’s opinion, not until the very end when he finally gave up. Would you go after Scarlett? No. Would I? No. Rhett was a little old himself. His secret desire might have been to find a young, socially acceptable girlfriend (and later a wife) who he could teach to do what the girls at Belle’s would do. He wanted a high class society girl who he could teach to act, in private at night, like a bordello girl, and Scarlett seemed to be the right girl for that. But she turned out to be just too much trouble.
  11. As far as the portrayal of slavery goes in GONE WITH THE WIND, there are plenty of famous movies that have similar ingredients that we usually overlook, such as the comedy movies about pirates. Pirates were bad killers and vicious thugs, yet there are several movies in which we see pirates kidnapping local girls from some port town and carry them off to their ships as slaves. In some movies, we laugh at this and think its funny when we see the girls kicking and screaming. We laugh at comedy movies involving prostitutes, as if this profession is funny for the girls, rather than sad and tragic. We laugh at drunks and alcoholics who we should pity and feel sorry for. We enjoy major sword fights when men get their arms and head chopped off, and the more people the hero kills, the more we like the movie. We laugh at poor poverty stricken hillbillies and mentally **** people, such as in TOBACCO ROAD. One time I saw a Civil War movie in a theater in the South when I was a kid, and the heroes were the Yankees rather than the Rebs. Several of the Yankee men and women were portrayed as heroes and wonderful people, and the Rebs were scum. To my surprise, the audience kept cheering whenever the Yankees won a battle. These were 100% Reb audience members, cheering the Yankees! Hey, it’s just a movie, and the classic old Hollywood movie makers knew how to manipulate their audiences. Consequently, I see the slaves in GONE WITH THE WIND as being lucky for having good jobs with a good family. They even stayed with that family after the War. And again, it’s just a movie. A wonderful one, but a movie.
  12. I have never personally witnessed a LOVE TRIANGLE between grown adults that was not as SILLY as any love triangle between teenagers. I've seen adults crying, fist fights, threats, runaways, hiding out, saying nasty things to each other, threats of murder, and even murder.... it's just like what the teens do. It is a universal human nature, in my opinion, except I think the teens resort to murder less often than adults do.
  13. Is anyone here who is having problems re-registering using Windows XP? Windows started phasing out XP beginning last week on April 8, and this week they have disabled many of my IE 8 connection to my local ISP. I called the manager of the ISP, and he said because of this phase out of XP, I can log onto only 1 website at a time through his ISP. For example, I can load Google news and read the headlines, but when I click on any headline, nothing happens. I can't fully load the Old Movies on YouTube thread because of the embeds and connections to YouTube, and I can no longer post embeds on that thread. My local ISP guy said he could solve my problem by building me a new tower that runs Windows 7, at a cost of $780. So I don't know if it is Windows that is blocking my internet connections, or my local ISP, or both.
  14. Gerald, See this message from TCMModerator1 http://forums.tcm.com/index.php?/topic/48434-registering-issues/
  15. How about now? Last time I shut off my computer today, Microsoft downloaded 11 new files to my computer. That took about 3 hours. I don't trust them. Now, I can stay on line for only about half an hour and then my computer can't go to any website at all. I have to turn my computer off and my modem off then on, then turn on the computer again and I can go on line again for about half an hour. Then the same problem. My repair man has been so busy working with local companies who still use XP, he doesn't have time right now to come out here to see what is causing this problem. He's very busy right now fixing different local XP problems for several customers.
  16. Hi. In a nearly perfect film, I have trouble imagining any other people in it. The people in it now are a great part of what makes a film perfect. It's like, I couldn't imagine any pre-Brando, old-time classic actor, or post-Brando modern actor playing his role in A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE or ON THE WATERFRONT. Who would you get for that? I can't think of anyone either before or after Brando who could play those two roles as well as he did.
  17. Wow, I think we’ve got a real debate going here between some Northeastern and West Cost beats and intellectuals..... I’m outta here!

  19. I don’t think any random group of film fans can agree on what’s ESSENTIAL, except for a few major films, such as: GONE WITH THE WIND CITIZEN KANE HIGH NOON THE SEARCHERS DOUBLE INDEMNITY OUT OF THE PAST THE GRAPES OF WRATH A couple of the major war films (but which ones) And some of the early silents and early sound films such as: WINGS HELL’S ANGELS And a few of the films made from early 19th Century books, such as: WUTHERING HEIGHTS LITTLE WOMEN GREAT EXPECTATIONS But of course there are dozens of others we could add to that list, but not without disagreements. And I’m sure we will have some disagreements over the short list I’ve just made.
  20. 423 "I hate to tell you this.... but we've received a lot of complaints from several Citizens Committees. You are going to have to change the name of your dog. If you don't, I'm afraid someone is going to run over him." . . . . . . If you don't get it, then see this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046889/board/nest/139017338?ref_=tt_bd_1
