  1. I 100% agree with you Mr. Dobbs.  A truly great and powerful silent film.  As I had never seen "THE LAST COMMAND" before, I was so looking forward to this viewing and was enthralled.  So well made and in such detail.  Jannings, Brent, Powell and all the cast were terrific.  A big thumbs up to TCM for showing this amazing film.

Yes, a great cast and very well directed. I loved so many of the silent eye movements, and very good photography and editing too.

  2. Do you think this story about Jannings' Oscar for the film is fact? It's from Wikipedia:

Emil Jannings received his award early due to the fact that he was going home to Europe before the ceremony.

Tiger near Paris: Helicopter search by emergency services

13 November 2014 Last updated at 17:56 GMT

Police and fire officials are searching for a tiger on the loose in a town outside Paris, local authorities say.

A woman alerted officials after spotting the big cat in a supermarket car park in Montevrain, east of the French capital, local media reported.

Cedric Tartaud, director of the mayor's office, told the BBC: "We don't believe this tiger is totally dangerous because if it's a young tiger, maybe approximately 70kg… maybe it's afraid... maybe he can come from a circus in the cities around Montevrain. We don't know."

  4. This is a straight line of girls, shown on a flat screen but photographed with the 3-camera setup, thus showing the distortion, which makes the line of girls look curved:

This SMILEBOX on TV, pushes the two center girls back and the two end girls forward, to straighten out the straight line of girls, but now the whole screen is distorted:

  5. Yes after seeing the rest it is obvious that there are no likeable characters in this movie, I guess that is why he lost power. From what I read in real life Nicholas was even more aloof than in the movie.

I kept yelling at him through my TV screen, shouting.......

"HEY! GET OUT! GET OUT! GO TO ENGLAND OR SOMEPLACE ELSE, BUT GET OUT!!"

  6. How come How the West Was Won is the only cinerama film tcm has shown smileboxed?

It's not possible to show 2001: A Space Odyssey and Ice Station Zebra smileboxed?

I don't think they were filmed in 3-camera Cinerama, so they are not distorted like How West Won, which was filmed with the most idiotic 3-camera gismo ever made.

  7. CNN to pull plug on broadcasting in Russia

Russia’s assault on foreign “propaganda” has made new waves, after CNN said it would stop broadcasting in the country and a Kremlin-backed news service outlined plans for global expansion.

CNN said its English-language news channel would not be available after the end of the year “in light of recent changes in Russian media legislation”. Russia has banned advertising on cable and satellite channels, while also preventing foreign companies from owning more than 20 per cent of media outlets from 2016.

  8. I'm not sure where to put this news story, but here it is. By the way, to get more news stories about TCM, Dish, CNN, Directv, Comcast and other related stuff we are interested in, go to Goggle News, then up at the top search box, type in simple terms such as DISH TV, or TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES, or DIRECT TV, etc, etc.

Dish posts revenue below estimates as it loses pay-TV users

(Reuters) - Dish Network Corp (DISH.O), the second-largest U.S. satellite TV company, reported lower-than-expected quarterly revenue as it lost pay-TV subscribers due to increased competition.

Dish, which has about 14 million subscribers, said on Tuesday it lost about 12,000 pay-TV subscribers in the third quarter compared with the second quarter.

  9. 12:30  PM tomorrow afternoon:

    Badlands (1973)

A young tough guy and his teen-aged girlfriend take off on a killing spree.

DirTerrence Malick CastMartin Sheen , Sissy Spacek , Warren Oates .

Very realistic, about two young cross-country killers. I've done news stories on these types of people, and a lot of the young couples are very much like this....... young, stupid, and crazy.

Years ago, I had a young girlfriend who looked, sounded, and acted just like Sissy Spacek does in this movie.

    Good thing I wasn't a cross-country killer. :)

  10. To someone else (not to Fred):

HOW DARE YOU ASSUME ANYTHING ABOUT ME, YOU DON'T KNOW ME AND YOU DON'T WHAT I THINK OR FEEL. APPARENTLY YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT ANYONE EXCEPT YOURSELF AND YOU PROVE THAT WITH THE TONE OF YOUR WRITING. I actually FEEL SORRY FOR YOU. I HOPE I AM NEVER SO HATEFUL TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE DONE NOTHING TO ME BUT ASK SIMPLE QUESTIONS ON A MESSAGE BOARD.

So, I'll be sticking around unless I get banned for speaking my mind but somebody needed to say it.....I am willing to bet it falls on deaf ears. And to the rest of you, I'm sorry I got angry.

LOL, now you are officially "One Of Us". :)

    Glad to have you here.

I'm an old man and occasionally I get mad and start ranting. :) Although I haven't done that lately.

Now I just sort of overlook insults directed at me. And that is fun because it drives the insulter nuts.

  11. Your correct and this is why I continue to mention the Dodgers and the contract dispute between TimeWarner and the content carriers (Cox (my carrier),  DISH, Direct TV,  etc...),  where for the entire season 70% of the So Cal market didn't have access to the games.     Many said the dispute would be over before the start of the season.  NOT.

Back in the Good ol' Days, major companies would at least pretend that they cared about their customers.

Today they don't bother with such attitudes and "public relations" is a thing of the past.
