  1. More than a few have felt that vibe about Skinner's characterization, Fred.

    Yes, good. I thought so.

The Wiki entry for the book and the movie are different, and the les. context in the movie is mentioned and attributed to some TCM reviewer.

I think it is rather obvious, but I don't think 99% of a 1944 audience would pick up on it.

  2. I agree.   A very well balanced picture (romance, humor but in the right places,  scary but not over the top so) and not campy (which is always difficult with a horor film).

Did you get any hints in the movie that the lady doctor and the bad ghost had been les***ns?

Normally I disagree with such "guessing" about things like this, but Cornelia Otis Skinner gave several little speaches that suggested such a relationship and she said something about not needing any men.

  3. Not to worry. The lobbyists are paying off the politicians to make sure this never happens.

I knew a crooked mayor in a small town about 25 years ago. He trusted me and told me lots of stuff about how he worked his deals.

For example, he had $50,000 he could donate to one of the two candidates for Governor. He decided to donate $25,000 to each one, so that whichevre one won the election, they would pay him back with lots of favors and state contracts. So, to a rich crook like him, it didn't matter which one won the election.

He trusted me to tell me this because he knew that I was concerned that he might have me shot if I ever exposed any of his scams.

  4. A bunch of damn liars and crooks.

    Amen.

This was my phone company President about 8 years ago:

He was convicted of 19 counts of insider trading in Qwest stock on April 19, 2007[1] – charges he claims are U.S. government retaliation for his refusal to give customer data to the National Security Agency in February, 2001.[2]

On July 27, 2007, he was sentenced to six years in federal prison, and after appeals failed he reported to Federal Correctional Institution, Schuylkill in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania on April 14, 2009 to serve his sentence.[3] Nacchio finished serving his sentence on September 20, 2013.[4]

    This is my banK:

The news is not quite so good for bank customers, however. Earlier this month, Wells Fargo and nine other banks agreed to pay a combined $8.5 billion to settle the government's allegations that they had wrongfully foreclosed on homeowners.

For its own part of the foreclosure settlement, Wells Fargo said it would pay $766 million in cash and commit an extra $1.2 billion to "foreclosure prevention actions," such as mortgage modifications. The settlement also forced it to take a $644 million charge to fourth-quarter results.

But the payout, it seems, is only one part in a littany of Wells Fargo's fines and illicit behavior.

    My satellite TV provider:

DirecTV Inc. will pay $5.34 million to settle charges that its telemarketers called households listed on the national do-not-call registry to pitch satellite TV programming, Federal Trade Commission officials said Tuesday.

The proposed settlement, if approved by a federal judge in Los Angeles, would be the FTC's largest civil penalty in a consumer protection case.

  5. Everything changes, every company goes down on service and up on price.

I spent more money to go up to a 1.5 Meg ISP DSL service, and I got a year of seeing YouTube movies WITHOUT INTERUPTION at that speed. But now YouTube has changed and half the movies stop after a few minutes, and a pop-up ad from YouTube says I've got to down load a bunch of new programs to get non-stop movies now.

My telephone company guaranteed me DSL for $15 a month. Well, that turned out to be an "introductory" offer that lasted a year. Now I have to pay $28 a month for the same service, AND that is not a fast enough speed to watch all YouTube movies now.

A bunch of damn liars and crooks are running the companies now.

My own local bank was bought out by a major national bank and now they are lying to me about a lot of things and sending me commercials as spam on my email. I went to my local drive up windown to get some cash out, and before the girl cashed my check and gave me the money, SHE STARTED GIVING ME A COMMERCIAL ABOUT HOW i COULD GET A BIG LOAN FROM THAT BANK. A COMMERCIAL over the drive-through speaker system! I stopped her and said, I DON'T NEED A LOAN, JUST GIVE ME MY MONEY AND LET ME GET OUT OF HERE.

i JUST GOT A LETTER FROM MY BANK SAYING THEY ARE GOING TO CANCEL MY CREDIT CARD BECAUSE i DON'T USE IT ENOUGH. i'VE HAD THAT CARD SINCE 1968, WHICH IS 46 YEARS, AND NOW THEY ARE GOING TO CANCEL IT BECAUSE i DON'T USE IT ENOUGH TO SUIT THEM. WELL F. them.

So it's the same with Cable and Satellite TV and YouTube and the movie companies, TV channels, etc., etc.

They are cheating us and lying to us.

  6. I think so, too. They want to keep the money rolling in. They are not going to give discounts or make it so you can get by with $20 a month for your entire cable bill. No way. That's why other options like Netflix look appealing to consumers.

Yeah, a lot of people think a-la-carte means $10 a month for their 10 favorite channels, but that's not right. It will be $100 a month for theri 10 favorite channels.

  7. Just near the end of Juke Girl, DISH cut out of the movie and suddenly put FX in TCM's place.  They said on the channel that Turner pulled its channels because they couldn't come to a settlement.  I'm betting it was just DISH being cheap.  Hollywood Reporter has an article saying that DISH hasn't returned to the table to discuss it.

I have been with DISH for many years but I am letting them know that unless they come to a settlement and bring back TCM really quickly, I am going to drop them!

update --- I just got off the phone with a DISH rep.  I told him to pass on to his bosses that I am very unhappy with this and I will switch to DIRECTV unless TCM is returned.  The rep said he understood that I am upset and said to make up for it he could give me a discount on my service.  I said I didn't want a discount...I subscribe to DISH in order to get TCM.  No TCM, I'm gone.

See this info from Dish TV:

  8. I didn't see that intro, but regarding that particular film, I had considered making a post here to warn people about it's content of actual gruesome animal slaughter. I've never seen all of it, but I vividly recall some scenes that I wouldn't wish to be inflicted on anyone.

I can't watch the beginning of KING SOLOMON'S MINES for that same reason. The killing of a large animal is horrifying to me. I can't watch it. I don't believe in telling other people what not to watch, but I like to hear a warning about animal killings.

  9.

However I do roll my eyes when they apologize for showing Birth of a Nation, or when Bob warns us to leave the room because we're about to see a drawing of a black stereo-type. Over time, we should become less sensitive to these things, not more.

As time goes by, the TCM audience becomes larger and more diverse.

The PC warnings are NOT for us old movie buffs, they are for younger and newer TCM viewers who do not know what we already know.

It's the same reason TCM continues to show that old "letterbox" promo that we old timers already know about. The promo, shown now, is being shown for younger and newer viewers, not for us old timers. :)

  10. One of the reasons I watch TCM is that movies are presented as-is with no apologies or warnings, that is, until just before the showing of Trader Horn.on 17 October.

In that, the movie host just had to apologize for the lack of political correctness in this 84 year old movie. What's up with that?

I think that is ok, and TCM is handling the situation correctly.

I see a lot of intelligent and highly educated black people talking and being interviewed on the 4 cable news channels, and they sometimes mention that old stuff and they are very understanding about it.  I.E., they don't like it but it is apart of our national history, so let's just remember it as history and move on and don't make a big deal out of it.

I'm thinking about a young 25 year old educated black person who has 150 TV channels and finds TCM for the first time, while channel surfing, and sees one of these old films, and THAT is when these types of introductions are important, so the NEW viewers will understand that TCM does not censor history

With apologies like that, I am now able to watch fine actors like Willie Best and see him as a great comedian actor, without feeing bad about his always being type cast, and I can enjoy films in which he actually appears to be quite intelligent, and I don't have to sit around feeling guilty for something I didn't do, 70 years ago.

  11. I've always liked Willie Best's ghost type films because the way he looks when he is frightened is exactly the way I feel when frightened.

I was watching one of the ghost and old dark house films later that evening, when all my power went out and was out for two hours. With no lights at all, until I eventually found a flashlight, I felt exactly like Willie Best in his haunted house films. :)

  12. Several earlier stars became cowboy actors when they became a little old or chubby, such as Johnny Mack Brown and William Boyd, who both had been handsome young lover leading men earlier.

Also, some early western movie stars such as Hoot Gibson and Tex Ritter later became "sidekicks" when they became older or chubby.

  13. Texas health officials have ordered any person who entered the room of the first Ebola patient at a Dallas hospital not to travel by public transport, including planes ship, buses or trains, or visit groceries, restaurants or theaters for 21 days, until the danger of developing Ebola has passed.

Just like in the movies, lol.

We also have anew Ebola Czar with no medical experience, lol.

Some internet message boards are asking all people who had any contact with that first patient to stay off all message boards for a full 21 days, until all danger has passed.

  14. I’ve had a similar experience when investigating fine details in fuzzy 8mm films. The more I studied the film clips, the clearer they became to me, so that after a few hundred viewings, I could see things in the scenes that a “beginner” could not see.

Any professional who enhances security camera films and videos can see in the videos what other people can’t see. After years of experience with this work, the human brain begins to do its own enhancing automatically, but it takes a lot of experience.

It works like this...... who is this man??

Stand up and step back from your computer screen several feet, and the man will become obvious. Your brain is filling in the gaps, based on years of experience with this man’s image.
