Now this is a film I do not like. I find it very belabored, very contrived. It is like they (the screenwriters) got so tripped up on being clever with the endless flashbacks within flashbacks that they forgot how to tell a simple straightforward story.
Hi Top,
We all go through life hearing stories like this. We often hear someone tell us a story that they witnessed part of but that other parts were told to them by someone else, and some other person told that someone else part of the story. There are many double and triple flashback stories told to us in real life.
And don't some of us marry people who we never can tell is telling us the truth or a lie about many different stories??

I love this film!! Great acting by all and a great screenplay.

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.
Here is Part 1 of 5. I don't know if the other parts are here, but this is the first one.

I usually select something from the Joe Pesci mf fall collection.
I usually don't like cursing in movies, but his line in "My Cousin Vinny" about being in "Ala-*******-bama" was so danged funny!!

My life's motto since the end of the 1960s is....."They're here already! You're next! You're next!"

Listen carefully in this film. It contains one and two words that often turn up in jungle movies, but it never has a definition.
I have finally figured it out. It goes back to a 200 year old Portuguese term meaning "a conference with the natives".
See this info:
Mani-palava – sex with Tondalayo in “White Cargo” or sex between a white man and local native woman.
palava – used in movies but not on internet
palaver – used on internet, meaning: to talk to, have conference with natives, waste time in a fruitless conversation.
----------------------------
Dictionary dot com:
1. a conference or discussion.
2. a long parley, especially one between primitive natives and European traders, explorers, colonial officials, etc.
3. profuse and idle talk; chatter.
Palava and palaver can mean "conference" or "sex" with local natives around the world.

It means they are very tolerant of SONG OF THE SOUTH. They do not take offense to it, because they look at it as a long ago story that has no bearing on their modern identities.
Thank you for asking that question, jake, because that's a point I wanted to make.
Look folks...... we are all NOT of just two types of people (L or C). We don't all live in the same place (East coast, West coast, and "the South".
My feeling about uncle Remus is that he reminds me of my old white grandfather who used to tell old-time stories to us kids, and my cousins, old stories from the turn of the 20th Centuries, such as about the crazy man who lived in the woods and who kidnapped little children if they went out in the yard late night to p e e LOL, we believed him, but the story was just a hoax.
Anyway, Black people might not see that film character the same way and they might be insulted by Uncle Remus, but he DOES remind me of my Old White Grandfather, because I see the content of his character and NOT the color of his skin, every time I see Song of the South. That's exactly what Dr. King ask for in the future, during his most famous Washington DC speech of 1963, and I finally feel that way about ALL people, including Uncle Remus, and my grandfather.
Why don't we all make suggestions of what films to show on MLK day, so we can change them up a little every year. I think it is the repeating of the same films that is the problem.
So, let's hear a list of suggestions for MLK day films from every one. Ok?

wow!
did teddy really exclaim this?

Well, not exactly.
But he didn't show very many films from the 60s and 70s. Very few. See obrienmundy's list. -

Wonderful thread, as usual.
I NEVER before knew how many stars were married to other stars, until I started following this thread.

Actually, I think TCM makes very few scheduling mistakes, considering the oddity of what they must schedule, which is a lot of different films of a lot of different odd lengths. Other networks usually have very normal and standard timing schedules that are the same every day, but TCM's film, short, and promo schedule is different every day of the year.

Yup. Same here, Fred, in a corporation which outsourced my job overseas.
As Westbrook Van Voorhis used to say: Time marches on.
Yep. It reminds me of that movie, Soylent Green (1973). Some day, food will be people over 55. That is, people over 55 will become canned food. Dog food first, then people food later.

"THERE WILL BE NO 1970s, 80s, or 90s FILM ON TCM
AS LONG AS I AM HERE!!"

I think that TCM won't be touched, as unlike the other channels which have been losing their target audience, TCM's audience has remained loyal and true. Another reason why TCM will not change is because the channel has its name associated with many other mediums, such as DVD boxed sets, a cruise, and a film festival. It has become a name brand in addition to a channel.
What?? No NFL football games on TCM??

Like all the other corporations in America, it's also all about age and the commensurate salaries and health care.
On Tuesday morning, CNN employees -- and those at other Turner Broadcasting networks such as TNT, TBS, and HLN -- were informed that staff over 55 years old or with the company for 10 or more years were eligible for a buyout.
That happened to me in the TV business, years ago. Older people usually have worked their way up to higher salaries, because of their vast experience in the business. Younger employees will work cheap, especially ones right out of high school and college.
But the young ones have no experience and will make a lot of mistakes. Watch for more mistakes, once all the over-55 people are gone and the 20-year-olds start running most of the functions of TCM. doh.... like the big snafuu last night with the one cartoon show run twice in a row, and the other one not shown at all.

Turner to lay off 1500 employees from all areas including cnn, tbs, tnt, TCM, etc.
I would not know what to do If any negative changes happened here. I'm a disabled shut-in and it's therapy for me and others. I pray TCM doesn't go the way AMC did and start showing edited and cut films and tons of ads.

http://www.cbs46.com/story/26365954/turner-cnn-facing-job-cuts-and-changes
Turner executives have hinted at significant job cuts as soon as this week.
CNN president Jeff Zucker told staff to expect changes saying, "We are going to do less and have to do it with less." That has set off a swirl of rumors about the company's future, causing fear for employees and residents of Atlanta.

Note:
They need to bring Ted back and let him run it again. He made billions of dollars running it his way and running it right.

Fred-- I am concerned your comments are going to lead into discussions and arguments about politics and religion. Let us please try to steer clear of that. I think ALL people find something to watch on TCM, regardless of background, because the movies give us a glimpse of American history as seen through the eyes of classic Hollywood.
Ok.

I guess films like REBECCA are non-political.

Well TCM still isn't showing those Charlie Chan movies so they are not racist enough for my taste!
The problem with the best early Chan movies is that they are owned by the Fox movie company, and I think Fox is still not renting them out to other channels or showing them on the Fox channels. But many are on YouTube.
Warner Oland and wife, in China to visit and tour.

Maybe you should copyright these and sell them to other websites.

I try to take at least 3 showers per day, soaping myself thoroughly in each one.

Yes, Gina looked great in this movie and she was funny in a very understated way (well mostly).
I hate to admit this..... but..........
I don't understand any of this movie.

actually, it's a triple flashback.
The doctor first tells the husband-to-be one flashback about meeting Norman, and Norman's story.. Within that is Norman's flashback about Nancy. Within that is Nancy's flashback, told to Norman, about being a child with the locket. That's three flashbacks within the doctor's full story.
