When AOR radio came around on the FM stations (with the jocks who spoke as if they were half stoned? Remember those guys?) and around the time of Physical Graffiti's release, that's when I began seriously building an LP collection. Prior to that I bought 45s and a few LPs, the very first being Don McClean. I did have Elton's first compilation album. At least I think if was his first, with the white suit and cane photo.

I was listening to AOR by the mid '70s, seguing to lots of Prog and by the end of the decade Punk and/or New Wave.  By 1980 I was looking for OOP albums that were always hard to find.   I remember the DJs you refer to, there were 2 main AOR stations out of NYC, one was WPLJ the other probably WNEW and DJs like Carol Miller or Scott Muni ("Scottso") lots of others...

At the Speed of Sound was actually the only Wings album I ever considered buying. It was heavily promoted. I ultimately passed, probably because I associated it with Top 40 at a time when I was looking to build an album collection. I steered clear of Elton John LPs for the same reason, then years later went back and bought many second-hand. That had been a mistake.

The first album I bought myself was ELTON JOHN ...I was 11 or 12... I also bought a lot of WINGS, and Greatest Hits collections of many artists, stuff now I am less inclined to listen to.   In my youth, I listened to MOR and Oldies radio.

"Warm And Beautiful" which is Paul at his best, a touching love song with one of his prettiest melodies.

I was over WINGS At The Speed Of Sound for decades because of that song - more sugar-coated sincerity.  Ick.  I had listened to the album for months not too long ago.  I actually like the Paul not singing songs, and the song I once thought well of "Beware My Love" is indeed overlong.  "Silly Love Songs" does have a terrific bass line and has not worn out as much as I'd have expected after all this time.   "Let 'Em In" I owned on 45 before the album, still like it.

Put it on the platter, let it play. Turn it over and do it again. Not many records you can do that with. No needle-dropping necessary.

I was never a big WHO fan, though I had 3 or 4 on vinyl, the only one I had to own on CD was Who's Next.  There aren't too many that had a record like that for me that holds up forever.

I have an anniversary edition that contains a few extra numbers, "Pure and Easy" being one. I can see why they might have thought it doesn't quite fit the set, but I'm very happy I have it

That's what I was listening to and the "bonus" selections were wisely left off of that perfect record.

The last song is "Treat Her Gently-Lonely Old People" which is a bit dull not as tuneful as some of the other songs on here.

And that absurd sticky treacle is the reason I do not have a copy of this album, which I overall like very much.  That "Treat 'er Gently" crap works my nerves.

McCulloch sings his own composition "Medicine Jar" about a pill popping junkie.

JIMMY's song "Wino Junko" on the next album is  like "Medicine Jar" - weirdly prescient.

Recently I've been listening to quite a bit of Perry Como and Nat King Cole. Also Ray Charles "Ain't That Love", Sam Cooke "Movin' and Groovin'", and some Louis Prima "Pennies From Heaven". You can tell I have been missing Lindy Hop dances quite a bit since Covid began! >.<

I have CDs of all of them.  The  one I like best is LOUIS PRIMA - "Old Black Magic"...

here's validation for you- i made it about 25-30 minutes in before i checked out. from the film's opening moment when the boat FITZCARRALDOS its way sloooowly and IN ENTIRETY across the screen, I remember thinking I was not gonna have the patience for this.

    I was right.

i not recognize DIRK BOGARDE for a long while, which any actor would (and should) take as the highest compliment.

There are a few movies that I describe as "motionless" which of course they aren't.  But hypnotic films with long stretches to look, listen, and think I have come to love.  Like 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY or LAWRENCE OF ARABIA or DEATH IN VENICE.  Each must be in my list of top 10 favorite films.
